No. 37 September 16, th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville THE EXALTATION of the HOLY CROSS On Friday the Church celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The feast recalls three events: the finding of the True Cross by St. Helena, the mother of the e m p e r o r C o n s t a n t i n e ; t h e dedication of churches built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary; and the restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem in A.D. 629 by the emperor Heraclius after it had fallen into the hands of Chosroas, King of the Persians in A.D Under Constantine, around A.D. 327, Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem, caused excavations to be made in order to determine the location of Calvary as well as that of the Holy Sepulchre. It was in the course of these excavations that the wood of the Cross was recovered. It was recognised as authentic, and for it was built a chapel or oratory. Soon after the discovery of the Cross its wood was cut up into small relics and quickly scattered throughout the world. It is the Cross, the ancient symbol of humiliation and failure, which is for us the sign of triumph and salvation. For us the Cross is the sign of the victory of good over evil, of life over death, and we honour this symbol whenever we make the sign of the Cross on ourselves. For by this we mark ourselves out as Christians and we unite ourselves with the agony of the Cross so that we may be brought to share in its exaltation. And when we look on the wood of the holy Cross, we remember that it was on that which hung the salvation of all the world.

4 HOLY TRINITY CHURCH Granville granvilleparish.org.au Holy Trinity Holy Trinity Parish App First Holy Communion Mass Next Sunday Mass for those children making their first Holy Communion will be held next Sunday, 16 September, at 12:00 p.m at Holy Trinity Church. There will be 12 children making their first Holy Communion on Sunday. This is an important day in the lives of these young parishioners and in the life of the parish. Please pray for our young parishioners who will be receiving the Body and Blood of Our Lord that they will also respect and honour the Sacrament of the Eucharist and always seek to cooperate with the abundant graces offered in the Holy Mass. Funeral Mass for Sylvia Bonett We are saddened to announce the death of Sylvia Bonett. Sylvia was an organist in the parish for over 20 years in addition to many other ministries in which she was involved and would be well known to many long time parishioners. Due to ill health, she moved to Queensland a couple of years ago to be closer to her children. Sylvia died on Wednesday, the Memorial of the Holy Name of Mary, and so we pray that the Blessed Virgin Mary will bear her soul to her Son, Our Lord. Her funeral will be offered at Holy Trinity Church on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Please pray for the repose of her soul and for the consolation of her family in the faith and hope of the resurrection of Our Lord. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Holy Trinity Friendship Group Bus Trip The Holy Trinity Friendship Group is hosting a bus trip to Port Kembla on Monday, 27 September. If you are interested in joining the trip, or if you know of anybody who would like to go, please speak with John Borg on telephone Parish Pastoral Council The Parish Pastoral Council meeting was held last Wednesday evening at Holy Family Primary School. Matters discussed included the success of the Holy Trinity Parish Fair as well as preparations for the upcoming Holy Family Parish Fair. The Trinitarians Youth Ministry was congratulated on their outstanding support of the parish and their participation in many parish events. The progress of Plenary Council 2020 was also raised and the council was advised that Helen Boyer, Principal of Holy Trinity Primary School, will be stepping down at the end of the year. The next meeting will be held in November at Delany College.

7 Saints & STUFF CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH The Sacrifice on the Cross CATHOLIC Trivia Croissants Th e C o u n c i l o f Tr e n t emphasises the unique character of Christ's sacrifice as the source of eternal salvation and teaches that "his most holy Passion on the wood of the cross merited justification for us. And the Church venerates his cross as she sings: Hail, O Cross, our only hope. Here is some interesting trivia for all our croissant lovers. The Most Holy Name of Mary The Memorial of the Holy Name of Mary is celebrated each year on 12 September. Pope Innocent XI introduced it to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Vienna in It was removed following Vatican II but restored by Pope St. John Paul II in 2002 along with the Memorial of the Holy Name of Jesus. The memorial commemorates all the privileges bestowed upon Mary by God and all the graces received through her intercession and mediation. The day is often celebrated by croissants which commemorated the defeat of the Ottoman army at Vienna on this feast day. 618 The cross is the unique sacrifice of Christ, the one mediator between God and men. But because in his incarnate divine person he has in some way united himself to every man, the possibility of being made partners, in a way known to God, in the paschal mystery is offered to all men. He calls his disciples to take up [their] cross and follow [him], for Christ also suffered for [us], leaving [us] an example so that [we] should follow in his steps. In fact Jesus desires to associate with his redeeming sacrifice those who were to be its first beneficiaries.this is achieved supremely in the case of his mother, who was associated more intimately than any other person in the mystery of his redemptive suffering. Apart from the cross there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven (St. Rose of Lima). Last Wednesday, 12 September, was the glorious feast of the Holy Name of Mary. On that day 335 years ago, in A.D. 1683, the Catholic armies of Europe fought the Ottoman army at Vienna. It was after this battle that the crescent pastry came into being. 8 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B The Readings First Reading The Prophet Isaiah (50:5-9) The Lord has opened my ear. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard; I did not cover my face against insult and spittle. The Lord comes to my help, so that I am untouched by the insults. So, too, I set my face like flint; I know I shall not be shamed. My vindicator is here at hand. Does anyone start proceedings against me? Then let us go to court together. Who thinks he has a case against me? Let him approach me. The Lord is coming to my help, who dare condemn me? Responsorial Psalm (Ps 114:1-6, v. 9). I will walk in the presence of the Lord, in the land of the living. I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal; for he turned his ear to me in the day when I called him.. They surrounded me, the snares of death, with anguish of the tomb; they caught me, sorrow and distress. I called on the Lord s name. O Lord my God, deliver me!. How gracious is the Lord, and just; our God has compassion. The Lord protects the simple hearts; I was helpless so he saved me.. He has kept my soul from death, my eyes from tears and my feet from stumbling. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.. Second Reading The Letter of St. James (2:14-18) Take the case, my brothers, of someone who has never done a single good act but claims that he has faith. Will that faith save him? If one of the brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes and has not enough food to live on, and one of you says to them, I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty, without giving them these bare necessities of life, then what good is that? Faith is like that: if good works do not go with it, it is quite dead. This is the way to talk to people of that kind: You say you have faith and I have good deeds; I will prove to you that I have faith by showing you my good deeds now you prove to me that you have faith without any good deeds to show. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! My only glory is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, which crucifies the world to me and me to the world. Alleluia! Gospel The Gospel of Mark (8:27-35) Jesus and his disciples left for the villages round Caesarea Philippi. On the way he put this question to his disciples, Who do people say I am? And they told him. John the Baptist, they said, others Elijah; others again, one of the prophets. But you, he asked, who do you say I am? Peter spoke up and said to him, You are the Christ. And he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him. And he began to teach them that the Son of Man was destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to rise again; and he said all this quite openly. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. But, turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said to him, Get behind me, Satan! Because the way you think is not God s way but man s. He called the people and his disciples to him and said, If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.
