1 Granville Catholic Church Record Vol. 3. No. 31 August 5, th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville CELEBRATING 80 YEARS IN CHRIST WE LIVE, LOVE AND LEARN On Wednesday, 8 August, the Solemnity of St. Mary of the Cross, Holy Family Primary School celebrates its 80 th anniversary. It was on Tuesday, February 2, 1938, that the Sisters of St. Joseph arrived at The Trongate Hall in Granville to commence their work of Catholic education among the children of the district. At that time the Sisters travelled daily from their convent at Holy Trinity for lessons. Parishioners were most generous with gifts of furniture and other necessities and provisions for the Sisters. Over 40 students started their schooling, but such was the enthusiasm shown by The Trongate Catholic community that numbers were increased to 75 within just a few weeks. By 1952 the old hall had become so overcrowded with students that a new building was erected across the r o a d. T h i s w a s a d u a l - u s e construction, which housed a church and school, catering for Kindergarten to Year 6. Shortly afterwards in 1954, a convent was established at 178 Clyde Street. In 1963 and 1967, further additions were made to the original building to cater for the greater numbers of students. Two new classrooms were added in It was a sad occasion in 1987 when the Sisters ended their 50 years of administration at Holy Family Primary School. Their dedication and courage in the education of young students in the Catholic faith was carried on under Granville Guildford the guidance of the first lay Principal, which continues today under the leadership of our current Principal, Mrs. Yvette Baird In 2010, Holy Family Primary School completed major building works including the construction of new classrooms and renovation of existing classrooms. A new library and the inclusion of the latest technology and modern furniture has been part of the project. The new buildings were formally blessed and opened in 2011, coinciding with the school s 73 rd anniversary marks the 80 th anniversary of Holy Family Primary School, and the continuation of generations of dedicated work to serve the mission of Catholic education in the Granville area.

Granville Guildford We would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to L.J. Hooker Granville-Guildford for being the major sponsor for the Holy Trinity Parish Fair. L.J. Hooker Granville-Guildford have long been a dedicated supporter of the parish by advertising in the Granville Catholic Church Record and sponsoring the parish fairs. Thank you to Joe Bechara and his team for their generous support. Their financial sponsorship, their banner, and the 20,000 leaflets arranged for a letterbox drop helped to make the fair the success it was! It was great to see their stand at the fair on the weekend along with the L.J. Hooker bear dancing with Zaffet Lebnen! Please consider supporting L.J. Hooker, Granville-Guildford s real estate agent. You can visit them at their office at 42 South Street, Granville or telephone o r v i s i t t h e i r w e b s i t e a t Prayer for Our Farmers Take some time to pray this special prayer and pray for our farmers that God will send much needed rain to refresh their crops and strengthen their livestock. O God, our Creator, you are the source of all life. It is through your divine providence and infinite power, that the wonder and splendour of all creation surround us. How majestic is your name in all the earth. We pray to you who calms the raging waters and commands the wind, to provide us sufficient rain to meet our needs. During this time of drought, we are mindful of our dependence on you for all that sustains our body and soul. We pray for the cooling, gentle rain that will once again bring life to the fields and crops that feed us, restore the colourful rainbow of flowers and the cooling shade of the trees. We ask for these blessings through the intercession of Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth. Amen.

5 Thank you to everyone involved with the incredible success of the 3 rd annual Holy Trinity Parish Fair! To all our volunteers, to all our sponsors and to everyone who made a contribution we are very grateful for your support! The success of the fair shows what is possible when parishioners pull together for their parish. It is because of our many parishioner volunteers, from both Holy Trinity Parish and Holy Family Parish, who donated and who worked so hard on the day and behind the scenes that the day was a triumph! The fair was our most successful yet and it is all thanks to everyone who contributed by making cash donations, donating prizes, giving w a t e r a n d s o f t d r i n k s, a n d volunteering on the day, and by making the parish fair known to family and friends. In particular we thank Richard Zaiter, who co-ordinated the parish fair for the third year, for the months of hard work, long hours and dedication in making the fair possible. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his outstanding efforts that made the day a success. It was great to see parishioners from both Holy Trinity Parish and Holy Family Parish pulling to gather to make it a wonderful day for everyone. Thank you, also, to our schools, Delany College, Holy Trinity Primary School, and Holy Family Primary School for supporting the parish fair. And thank you to Telstra Shop Parramatta and all those businesses who contributed prizes to the fair. And especially thanks to our major sponsor, L.J. Hooker Granville- Guildford, for their incredible support of the fair! M A J O R S P O N S O R Granville Guildford

7 SUNDAY, 21 OCTOBER The Holy Family Parish Fair is back for a third year! After the success of the last two fairs we are bringing the parish fair back for this year! All the fun and excitement happens on Sunday, 21 October so make sure you keep this day free to join in the fair. There will be food stalls with delicacies from around the world, amusement rides and games, a white elephant stall, and a chocolate wheel, and performances from our parishioners and Holy Family Primary School. HOW CAN YOU HELP? But to make this happen we need your help. We are looking for parishioners to volunteer to make this day the success we know it can be. And we are also looking for sponsors. Do you have your own business or do you know of businesses that would like to get involved and help out the parish? If you do why not ask them if they would be willing to become a sponsor or maybe they have goods or services that they would like to donate as prizes. So think about how you can help and get involved!

8 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B The Readings First Reading The Book of Exodus (16:2-4, 12-15) The whole community of the sons of Israel began to complain against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness and said to them, Why did we not die at the Lord s hand in the land of Egypt, when we were able to sit down to pans of meat and could eat bread to our hearts content! As it is, you have brought us to this wilderness to starve this whole company to death! Then the Lord said to Moses, Now I will rain down bread for you from the heavens. Each day the people are to go out and gather the day s portion; I propose to test them this way to see whether they will follow my law or not. I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel. Say this to them, Between the two evenings you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have bread to your hearts content. Then you will learn that I, the Lord, am your God. And so it came about: quails flew up in the evening, and they covered the camp; in the morning there was a coating of dew all round the camp. When the coating of dew lifted, there on the surface of the desert was a thing delicate, powdery, as fine as hoarfrost on the ground. When they saw this, the sons of Israel said to one another, What is that? not knowing what it was. That said Moses to them is the bread the Lord gives you to eat. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 77:3-4, 23-25, 54.. v. 24). The Lord gave them bread from heaven. The things we have heard and understood, the things our fathers have told us, we will tell to the next generation: the glories of the Lord and his might.. He commanded the clouds above and opened the gates of heaven. He rained down manna for their food, and gave them bread from heaven.. Mere men ate the bread of angels. He sent them abundance of food. He brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won.. Second Reading The Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians (4:17, 20-24) I want to urge you in the name of the Lord, not to go on living the aimless kind of life that pagans live. Now that is hardly the way you have learnt from Christ, unless you failed to hear him properly when you were taught what the truth is in Jesus. You must give up your old way of life; you must put aside your old self, which gets corrupted by following illusory desires. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution so that you can put on the new self that has been created in God s way, in the goodness and holiness of the truth. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! No one lives on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Alleluia! Gospel The Gospel of John (6:1-15) When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they found him on the other side, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here? Jesus answered: I tell you most solemnly, you are not looking for me because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat. Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life, the kind of food the Son of Man is offering you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal. Then they said to him, What must we do if we are to do the works that God wants? Jesus gave them this answer, This is working for God: you must believe in the one he has sent. So they said, What sign will you give to show us that we should believe in you? What work will you do? Our fathers had manna to eat in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Jesus answered: I tell you most solemnly, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven, it is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread; for the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Sir, they said give us that bread always. Jesus answered: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst.
