Bernard Bitekerezo our parishes have been drawn closer to the Catholic Church in Uganda, in particular, to his own diocese of Fort Portal. Catholics in Uganda number about 47% of the population, higher than Australia s 25%. Like Australia with St. Mary of the Cross, Uganda has its own Saint in St. Charles Lwanga who, with his companions, was martyred in 1886 in defence of Christians who were forced to apostatise and to renounce Christ. The demands on the Church in Uganda are great, with so many in need of basic care such as food, shelter, and medicine. In Fr. Bernard s old parish he was responsible for an orphanage with over 125 children as well as a number of schools and the care of 44 station churches. In his new parish Fr. Bernard finds himself close to the border with South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda all countries who have suffered terrible conflicts and whose refugees now cross into Uganda seeking safety. Fr. Bernard s parish of Butiiti houses a number of these refugees, as can be seen in the photograph above. All are desperately in need of food and other care. This weekend our parishes unite again to support those most in need and to raise money to help support Fr. Bernard and his parish in caring for so many seeking refuge. Your support of this appeal will show that the Church around the world is bound to one another and that those in need, spiritually and physically, will not be abandoned.

This week our parish will be holding a fundraiser to support Fr. Bernard and his parish in caring for these people. Envelopes are available in the pews if you would like to make a contribution. The money raised will do a great deal of good work and help to care for a great many people. In this way we in Australia can reach out across the world to Uganda and make the charity of our Faith known in a very real and practical way.

Next week Holy Family Parish will launch our own app for iphone and Android phones. This will allow us to better communicate with you throughout the week and keep you updated with relevant parish news or updates. The app is very well designed and very intuitive. It will be a great resource for parishioners by providing daily Mass readings, Catholic news and prayers, convenient prayer and Confession reminders, our bulletins and more. We hope for our new app to be a tool for fostering stronger parish life at Holy Family Parish and better engaging the New Evangelisation. So watch out next for our official launch announcement! We Need Your Help! Altar Servers, Singers, and Organist We are looking for parishioners to come forward and help out with the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sundays. We need altar servers to serve the Mass, singers to help out with the choir, and an organist or pianist who can step in now and then to help out. If you would like to serve at the altar, whatever age you may be, then come forward and speak with Fr. Andrew and he will be pleased to have your help. If you would like to join the choir for even one Sunday of the month then we would be pleased to have you. Whatever voice you have that voice was given to you by almighty God and so should be used for the glory of His name. So why not help out the parish at this Mass? And if you can play the organ or even the piano then why not use those skills at Mass? Whatever contribution we can make and however we can participate helps to make our parish grow. In this way we give back to God what He has given to us and we contribute to our own parish. So if you can help speak with Fr. Andrew or call the parish office.

6 Saints & STUFF St. Charles Lwanga and Companions St. Charles Lwanga, born in Uganda, was a convert to the Catholic Church, who was martyred for his faith and is revered as a Saint by both the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. As part of the king s effort to resist colonisation, the king insisted that Christian converts abandon their new faith and executed many Catholics and Anglicans between 1885 and 1887, including St. Charles. He was martyred on 3 June, 1886 by being burned alive. As he was being burnt, St. Charles said to his executioner, It is as if you are pouring water on me. Please repent and become a Christian like me. St. Charles and the other Christians who were killed with h i m w e r e c a n o n i s e d o n 18 October, 1964 by Pope Paul VI during Vatican II. To honour these African saints, Paul VI became the first reigning pope to visit sub-saharan Africa when he toured Uganda in July 1969, a visit that included a pilgrimage to the site of the martyrdom at Namugongo. Today the Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs stands at the site of the executions. CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH Martyrdom 2472 The duty of Christians to take part in the life of the Church impels them to act as witnesses of the Gospel and of the obligations that flow from it. This witness is a transmission of the faith in words and deeds. Witness is an act of justice that establishes the truth or makes it known Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith: it means bearing witness even unto death. The martyr bears witness to Christ who died and rose, to whom he is united by charity. He bears witness to the truth of the faith and of Christian doctrine. He endures death through an act of fortitude. Let me become the food of the beasts, through whom it will be given to me to reach God The Church has painstakingly collected the records of those who persevered to the end in witnessing to their faith. These are the acts of the Martyrs. They form the archives of truth written in letters of blood: It is better for me to die [in order to unite myself] to Christ Jesus than to reign over the ends of the earth. 8 15 th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A The Readings First Reading The Prophet Isaiah (55:10-11) Thus says the Lord: As the rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering the earth, making it yield and giving growth to provide seed for the sower and bread for the eating, so the word that goes from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 64: Lk. 8:8). The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. You care for the earth, give it water, you fill it with riches. Your river in heaven brims over to provide its grain.. And thus you provide for the earth; you drench its furrows, you level it, soften it with showers, you bless its growth.. You crown the year with your goodness. Abundance flows in your steps, in the pastures of the wilderness it flows.. The hills are girded with joy, the meadows covered with flocks, the valleys are decked with wheat. They shout for joy, yes, they sing.. Second Reading The Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (8:18-23) I think that what we suffer in this life can never be compared to the glory, as yet unrevealed, which is waiting for us. The whole creation is eagerly waiting for God to reveal his sons. It was not for any fault on the part of creation that it was made unable to attain its purpose, it was made so by God; but creation still retains the hope of being freed, like us, from its slavery to decadence, to enjoy the same freedom and glory as the children of God. From the beginning till now the entire creation, as we know, has been groaning in one great act of giving birth; and not only creation, but all of us who possess the first-fruits of the Spirit, we too groan inwardly as we wait for our bodies to be set free. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower; all who come to him will live for ever. Alleluia! Gospel The Gospel of Matthew (11:25-30) Jesus left the house and sat by the lakeside, but such crowds gathered round him that he got into a boat and sat there. The people all stood on the beach, and he told them many things in parables. He said, Imagine a sower going out to sow. As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away.
