1 Granville Catholic Church Record Vol. 3. No. 44 November 4, st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville THE FOUR LAST THINGS DEATH and J U DG EMENT The month of November is traditionally dedicated to praying for the holy souls in Purgatory. In recognition of this we will dedicate the bulletins this week and next to the Church s teachings on the four last things: death, judgement, heaven, and hell. This week we begin with death and judgement. Where does death come from? Death comes from sin. St. Paul in his letter to the Romans explained: Therefore, just as through one person sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all, inasmuch as all sinned (5:12). Before the fall of Adam and Eve man lived in communion with God and possessed bodily immortality. But with original sin we lost that immortality and so became subject to decay and to death. With the loss of bodily immortality also comes suffering and illness. So it is now our part in this life to suffer and die. But what is death? Death is nothing more than the separation of the body and soul. We do not cease to exist at death. We do not become unaware of things at death. Our bodies will cease to live as a result of age, sickness or accident, but we will continue. Life will go on; our souls will continue to be alive, but apart, for a time, from our bodies which will no longer be animated. Death is a temporary state, for at our death we will be judged by Christ in the particular judgement, and then, at the end of the world, all men shall rise again for the general judgement. Thus the whole man, body and soul, will be rewarded for the good or evil that he has done, body and soul, in this life. There are three possible outcomes to the particular judgment. Those whose love for God has been perfected in this life are taken straight to heaven, where they enjoy endless happiness in the face to face vision of God. Those who die in God s love but still love Him imperfectly must be purified in the intermediate state of purgatory. Those, however, who reject God's love by mortal sin and die without repenting are condemned to the everlasting torments of hell. The Lord takes us seriously. He lets us have our own way. We get what we choose. We go to our own place. By the course of our lives we choose eternal happiness or eternal damnation. The general judgment at the end of time simply solemnly confirms the particular judgments of each one, with the difference that then the body as well as the soul will receive what is due to it. And all God s judgments will be revealed as most just.

Holy Trinity Piety Shop With Christmas only a few weeks away this is the time to visit the Holy Trinity Piety Shop and to have a look at the wonderful arrangement of gifts as well as the Columban Mission 2019 calendar. Mary Bazelmans and Annette Wirz spend a great deal of time selecting the various items that stock the shop and always have a delightful assortment of gifts. So make sure to stop by before or after Mass to have a look at what is available. Tuesday Evening Adoration and Mass Join us every Tuesday evening at Holy Trinity Church for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at 6:30 p.m. and Holy Mass at 7:00 p.m. and pray for vocations to the Priesthood and to religious life. It is important that we all pray that Our Lord may bless His Church with holy vocations so that the Mass may continue to be offered and the grace of the Sacraments administered and the faith, in the service of God and the Church, will continue to be made known. Holy Trinity Friendship Group Morning Tea The Holy Trinity Friendship Group is hosting its next morning tea on Tuesday, 13 November at 10:30 a.m. in MacKillop Hall. All are welcome to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and socialise with others and to spend a morning with new friends and parishioners. Thank You Thank you to the generous parishioner who donated $500 towards the restoration of the crucifix that hangs above the sanctuary. We are very grateful for that kindness and we are grateful to all those who so generously support the parish financially by their donations, in service by their time, and spiritually by their prayers.

5 PURGATORY Early Jewish thought includes the idea that one can help the deceased in their intermediate state through prayer (2 Macc 12:38-45). The belief that love can reach into the afterlife, that reciprocal giving and receiving is possible, in which our affection for one another continues beyond the limits of death this has been a fundamental conviction of Christianity throughout the ages and it remains a source of comfort today. Who would not feel the need to convey to their departed loved ones a sign of kindness, a gesture of gratitude or even a request for pardon? Our lives are involved with one another, through innumerable interactions they are linked together. No one lives alone. No one sins alone. No one is saved alone. The lives of others continually spill over into mine: in what I think, say, do and achieve. And conversely, my life spills over into that of others: for better and for worse. In the interconnectedness of Being, my gratitude to the other my prayer for him can play a small part in his purification. It is never too late to touch the heart of another, nor is it ever in vain. In this way we further clarify an important element of the Christian concept of hope. As Christians we should never limit ourselves to asking: how can I save myself? We should also ask: what can I do in order that others may be saved and that for them too the star of hope may rise? Then I will have done my utmost for my own personal salvation as well. Pope Benedict XVI, Spe Salvi, n. 48

6 Saints & STUFF HOLY SOULS The Church calls the faithful departed in purgatory undergoing their final purification the Holy Souls. These are the souls who have died with no mortal sin remaining on their souls but have unrepented venial sins or did not perfectly atone for their sins with acts of penance. The Church commemorates the Holy Souls in a particular way on 2 N o v e m b e r w i t h t h e Commemoration of the Faithful Departed and throughout the month of November. But apart from this the faithful departed are remembered in every Mass and are mentioned in each of the Eucharistic prayers as well as in the universal prayer (prayer of the faithful or general intercessions). Those who have died are no longer able to pray for themselves or to perform acts of penance for their sins so rely on those who remain on earth to offer Masses for them, to pray for them, to perform good works for them. By these they are entrusted to God s mercy. CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH Purgatory 1030 All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred S c r i p t u r e : Th e r e f o r e [ Ju d a s Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin. From the beginning the Church has honoured the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church a l s o c o m m e n d s a l m s g iv i n g, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead. CATHOLIC Trivia All Souls Day Tradition identifies the general custom of praying for the dead dating as far back as the book of 2 Maccabees 12:42-46 and a special day for intercession for the faithful departed on November 2 nd was set by St. Odilo of Cluny (d. 1048) in the year 998. The celebration was soon adopted in several dioceses in France, and spread throughout the Western Church. Soon the entire month of November became associated with prayer for the departed with lists of names of those to be remembered being placed near the altar on which the sacrifice of the Mass is offered. There is a legend connected with its foundation: a pilgrim returning from the Holy Land was shipwrecked on a desolate island. A hermit living there told him that amid the rocks was a chasm communicating with purgatory, from which perpetually rose the groans of tortured souls. The hermit also claimed he had heard the demons complaining of the efficacy of the prayers of the faithful, and especially the monks of Cluny, in rescuing their victims. Upon returning home, the pilgrim quickly told the abbot of Cluny, who then set 2 November as a day of intercession on the part of his community for all the souls in Purgatory.

8 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B The Readings First Reading The Book of Deuteronomy (6:2-6) Moses said to the people: If you fear the Lord your God all the days of your life and if you keep all his laws and commandments which I lay on you, you will have a long life, you and your son and your grandson. Listen then, Israel, keep and observe what will make you prosper and give you great increase, as the Lord God of your fathers has promised you, giving you a land where milk and honey flow. Listen, Israel: The Lord our God is the one Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. Let these words I urge on you today be written on your heart. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 32:4-5, 18-20, 22.. v. 22). I love you Lord, my strength. I love you, Lord, my strength, my rock, my fortress, my saviour. My God is the rock where I take refuge; my shield, my mighty help, my stronghold. The Lord is worthy of all praise: when I call I am saved from my foes.. Long life to the Lord, my rock! Praised be to the God that saves me. He has given great victories to his king and shown love for his anointed.. Second Reading The Letter to the Hebrews (7:23-28) There used to be a great number of priests under the former covenant, because death put an end to each one of them; but this one, Christ, because he remains for ever, can never lose his priesthood. It follows, then, that his power to save is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him. To suit us, the ideal high priest would have to be holy, innocent and uncontaminated, beyond the influence of sinners, and raised up above the heavens; one who would not need to offer sacrifices every day, as the other high priests do for their own sins and then for those of the people, because he has done this once and for all by offering himself. The Law appoints high priests who are men subject to weakness; but the promise on oath, which came after the Law, appointed the Son who is made perfect for ever. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! All who love me will keep my words, and my Father will love them and we will come to them. Alleluia! Gospel The Gospel of Mark (12:28-34) One of the scribes came up to Jesus and put a question to him, Which is the first of all the commandments? Jesus replied, This is the first: Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord, and you must love the Lord you God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. The scribe said to him, Well spoken, Master; what you have said is true: that he is one and there is no other. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself, this is far more important than any holocaust or sacrifice. Jesus, seeing how wisely he had spoken, said, You are not far from the kingdom of God. And after that no one dared to question him any more. Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen. Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great
