Granville Catholic Church Record Vol. 3. No. 36 September 9, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville T H E M O N T H O F Our Lady of Sorrows The month of September is given in honour of Our Lady of Sorrows, whose feast is celebrated on September 15 th. This feast is dedicated to the spiritual martyrdom of Mary, Mother of God, and her compassion with the sufferings of her Divine Son, Jesus. In her suffering she reminds us of the tremendous evil of sin and shows us the way of true repentance. So let us pray that the numerous tears of the Mother of God be conducive to our salvation; with which tears Thou, O God, art able to wash away the sins of the whole world. As Mary stood at the foot of the Cross on which Jesus was nailed for our salvation, the sword of sorrow Simeon had foretold pierced her soul. Here are given the seven sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Granville Guildford 1. The prophecy of Simeon. 2. The flight into Egypt. 3. The loss of the Child Jesus for three days. 4. Mary meets Jesus on his way to Calvary. 5. Crucifixion and Death of Jesus. 6. The body of Jesus being taken from the Cross. 7. The burial of Jesus.

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH Granville granvilleparish.org.au Holy Trinity Holy Trinity Parish App Can You Help with the Holy Family Parish Fair on Sunday, 21 October? The Holy Family Parish Fair is on Sunday, 21 October only 6 weeks away! And we are looking for parishioners who can support the fair. If you are able to donate any items that can be used as prizes on the chocolate wheel, it will be greatly appreciated. We are looking for things like gift cards or vouchers, toys for boys and girls, new electrical items, and items such as toiletries or small gifts that can be made into hampers. W e a r e a l s o a s k i n g f o r parishioners who can volunteer at the fair. Last year s Holy Family Parish Fair had a tremendous amount of volunteers from Holy Trinity and it was great to see how our parishes are growing closer together and supporting one another. If you are able to help it in any way, either with donations of prizes or if you would like to volunteer, please let Fr. Andrew know or contact the parish office during the week. Farewell to Helen Boyer, Principal of Holy Trinity Primary School After a long association with Holy Trinity Primary School and after five years as Principal, Helen Boyer will conclude her time at the school at the end of the year. On behalf of the parish we wish Helen all the very best in the future and we thank her for her service to the school and to the parish over these years. Phillip Mahoney, the current Principal of St. Patrick s Primary School at Guildford, will assume the role of Principal of Holy Trinity Primary School at the beginning of the new school year. Phillip has been Principal of St. Patrick s Primary School for the past five years and has also taught at St. Margaret Mary s Primary School in Merrylands. There will be formal farewells for Helen towards the end of the year where the parish and the school will have the chance to thank her for her service over these years. The details of these will be made known as these events are arranged. Thank You Thank you to all those who helped to prepare the supper after the vigil Mass last Saturday evening for the visit of the Bishop. In particular, thank you to Betty Rosette Chidiac, Betty Borg, and Ann Newell for their work in preparing the tea and cakes for the supper, as well as to all those who helped out. Holy Trinity Friendship Group This Tuesday The Holy Trinity Friendship Group is hosting its next morning tea on Tuesday, September 11 at 10:30 a.m. in MacKillop Hall. All are welcome to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and socialise with others and to spend a morning with new friends and parishioners. Bookings are also being taken for the bus trip to Port Kembla on Monday, 27 September. If you are interested in joining the trip, or if you know of anybody who would like to go, please speak with John Borg on telephone
. HOLY FAMILY CHURCH EAST GRANVILLE eastgranvilleparish.org.au Holy Family East Granville Holy Family Parish App World Youth Day Raffle Tickets Please Return If you have any books of raffle tickets, sold or unsold, please return them to the parish office by this Friday, 14 September as all parish sales must be delivered to the World Youth Day office for the drawer. First Holy Communion Mass Next Sunday Mass for those children making their first Holy Communion will be held next Sunday, 16 September, at 12:00 p.m at Holy Family Church. There will be 24 children making their first Holy Communion on Sunday. This is an important day in the lives of these young parishioners and in the life of the parish. Please pray for our young parishioners who will be receiving the Body and Blood of Our Lord that they will also respect and honour the Sacrament of the Eucharist and always seek to cooperate with the abundant graces offered in the Holy Mass. Our parish fair is only 6 weeks away on Sunday, 21 October! And we urgently need our parishioners to support us! If we are going to hold the fair this year we need your help to make the fair a success. We need a great deal of prizes that we can use for the chocolate wheel. Maybe you can help? Maybe you can make up a hamper of some toiletries or chocolates or small gifts? Or can you donate some new toys for boys and girls? Or what about a gift card? Or maybe you can make a cash donation to help the costs of the fair? The more prizes we have to add to the chocolate wheel the more we will be able to raise in support of the parish. This is our major fundraiser for the year and it was a tremendous success last year. So help us to make this year s fair another great success in support of the parish. Fundraiser in Support of Our World Youth Day Pilgrim Maryanne Takchi Today Today, after the 8:30 a.m. Mass and the 5:00 p.m. Mass, there will be a barbecue fundraiser in support of our World Youth Day pilgrim, Maryanne Takchi. Please come along and help to raise funds to support Maryanne in meeting the cost of the pilgrimage to Panama next January. Maryanne is a tremendous supporter of the parish and a role model as a parishioner and so this is our way to show our support in return to her for all that she does. Each pilgrim has to raise a large amount to meet the cost and so these fundraisers are an important help to them in raising the money they need to join the Pope and hundreds of thousands of youths f r o m a r o u n d t h e w o r l d i n celebration of our Catholic faith. advertising space for sale

Saints & STUFF ST. BENEDICT MEDAL The St. Benedict medal is one of the oldest and most honoured medals used by Christians and due to the belief in its power against evil is also known as the devilchasing medal. The front of the medal is marked by Saint Benedict s cross. The reverse side of the medal bears the words Vade retro satana ( Step back, Satan ), a phrase which has been used by Christians to ward off evil since the 15 th century. Tradition holds that as a young Benedictine, the future Pope Leo IX attributed his recovery from a snake bite to that cross. After becoming pope in 1049, Leo IX enriched the St. Benedict cross to the form of a medal, and gave it blessings and indulgences. It became increasingly popular in the 18 th century, after its formal approval by Pope Benedict XIV, to ward off spiritual and physical dangers, especially those related to evil, poison, and temptation. CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH The Desire for Happiness 1718 The Beatitudes respond to the natural desire for happiness. This desire is of divine origin: God has placed it in the human heart in order to draw man to the One who alone can fulfill it: We all want to live happily; in the whole human race there is no one who does not assent to this proposition, even before it is fully articulated. How is it, then, that I seek you, Lord? Since in seeking you, my God, I seek a happy life, let me seek you so that my soul may live, for my body draws life from my soul and my soul draws life from you. God alone satisfies The Beatitudes reveal the goal of human existence, the ultimate end of human acts: God calls us to his own beatitude. This vocation is addressed to each individual personally, but also to the Church as a whole, the new people made up of those who have accepted the promise and live from it in faith The New Testament uses several expressions to characterise the beatitude to which God calls man: the coming of the Kingdom of God; the vision of God: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God ; entering into the joy of the Lord. CATHOLIC Trivia Bleeding Host in Poland Confirmed to be the True Body and Blood of Christ In Poland a consecrated host fell on the floor and picked up and placed in a container with water, according to the report by the Bishop of Legnica. The falling of the host and it s preservation occurred on Christmas day of After the host was conserved in a container with water by the Parish Priest, it gradually began to turn to change colour, possessing red-bloody stains. The final medical statement by the Department of Forensic Medicine found that in the histopathological image, the fragments (of the Host) were found containing the fragmented parts of the cross striated muscle. It is most similar to the heart muscle. Tests also determined the tissue to be of human origin, and found that it bore signs of distress. In 2017 the Vatican approved the findings and reports of the case. advertising space for sale
23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B The Readings First Reading The Prophet of Isaiah (35:4-7) Say to all faint hearts, Courage! Do not be afraid. Look, your God is coming, vengeance is coming, the retribution of God; he is coming to save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed, then the lame shall leap like a deer and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy; for water gushes in the desert, streams in the wasteland, the scorched earth becomes a lake, the parched land springs of water. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 145: v. 1). Praise the Lord, my soul! It is the Lord who keeps faith for ever, who is just to those who are oppressed. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free.. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bound down, the Lord who loves the just, the Lord, who protects the stranger.. The Lord upholds the widow and orphan, but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion s God, from age to age.. Second Reading The Letter of St. James (2:1-5) My brothers, do not try to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the making of distinctions between classes of people. Now suppose a man comes into your synagogue, beautifully dressed and with a gold ring on, and at the same time a poor man comes in, in shabby clothes, and you take notice of the well-dressed man, and say, Come this way to the best seats ; then you tell the poor man, Stand over there or You can sit on the floor by my foot-rest. Can t you see that you have used two different standards in your mind, and turned yourselves into judges, and corrupt judges at that? Listen, my dear brothers: it was those who are poor according to the world that God chose, to be rich in faith and to be the heirs to the kingdom which he promised to those who love him. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Jesus preached the Good News of the kingdom and healed all who were sick. Alleluia! Gospel The Gospel of Mark (7:31-37) Returning from the district of Tyre, Jesus went by way of Sidon towards the sea of Galilee, right through the Decapolis region. And they brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man s ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly. And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. He has done all things well, they said he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak. RIGHT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NOBODY DOES IT. WRONG IS WRONG EVEN IF EVERYBODY IS WRONG ABOUT IT. G.K. Chesterton
