1 Granville Catholic Church Record Vol. 3. No. 9 March 4, 2018 Third Sunday of Lent, Year B The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville THE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION Your Faith Your Foundation yourcatholicfoundation.org.au L a s t y e a r t h e D i o c e s e o f Pa r ramatta wa s d e l i g h t e d t o announce the establishment of The Catholic Foundation, which replaced the Diocesan Works Fund, and expand on its works. The Catholic Foundation needs to raise $2.5 million annually to sustain the works of the Church in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains including the formation of our seminarians, providing Christian education in public schools, the empowering of our disabled with job training, supporting our deaf, and housing vulnerable single mothers facing homelessness. To achieve these great works, The Catholic Foundation proudly supports the H o l y S p i r i t S e m i n a r y, t h e Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, the Ephpheta Centre and Catholic Care. Donations of $2 or more to The C a t h o l i c Fo u n d a t i o n a r e t a x deductible. The Catholic Foundation will also manage The Catholic Fund, which will house gifts such as bequests and donations for special projects. Donations to this fund are not tax deductible. The Catholic Foundation aims to annually increase donations to further sustain, grow and expand the good works from our faithful in the Diocese building faith, hope and charity across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. F r i e n d s o f T h e C a t h o l i c Foundation can heroically sustain our works of faith, hope and charity by choosing to donate a major gift or become a regular monthly donor, and become an Ambassador of Faith, Hope and Charity. If 1 in 3 people attending Mass today become bronze ambassadors, the diocese would secure the funds needed to continue and grow its good works. The option to support a single area of work is also available. Donate now by making a gift using the envelopes available in the pews this weekend and help the parish meet its monetary quota or visit the foundation s website at yourcatholicfoundation.org.au.

6 Saints & STUFF ST. BRENDAN St. Brendan (A.D ), the patron saint of sailors and whales, was the brother of St. Briga. He was educated by St. Ita of Killeedy and St. Eric of Kerry and was a friend of St. Columba and St. Brendan of Birr, St. Brigid, and St. Enda of Arran. He was ordained in 512 and built monastic cells across Ireland. The legend which lead to his patronage of whales is as follows: St. Brendan and his brothers figure in Brendan s Voyage, a tale of monks travelling the high seas of the Atlantic, evangelising to the islands, possibly reaching the Americas in the 6 th century. At one point they stop on a small island, celebrate Easter Mass, light a fire and then learn the island is an enormous whale! CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH The Kingdom of God 543 Everyone is called to enter the kingdom. First announced to the children of Israel, this messianic kingdom is intended to accept men of all nations. To enter it, one must first accept Jesus word 545 Jesus invites sinners to the table of the kingdom: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners. He invites them to that conversion without which one cannot enter the kingdom, but shows them in word and deed his Father's boundless mercy for them and the vast joy in heaven over one sinner who repents. The supreme proof of his love will be the sacrifice of his own life for the forgiveness of sins. 546 Through his parables he invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice: to gain the kingdom, one must give everything. Words are not enough, deeds are required. The parables are like mirrors for man: will he be hard soil or good earth for the word? What use has he made of the talents he has received? Jesus and the presence of the kingdom in this world are secretly at the heart of the parables. One must enter the kingdom, that is, become a disciple of Christ, in order to "know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven". For those who stay outside, everything remains enigmatic. CATHOLIC Trivia 5 Lies from the Devil and What God Has to Say About Them 3. You re Not Forgiven and You Can t Move On This is the oldest trick in the book. Satan likes to tell you there is no way you deserve to be happy and there is no way you can stand up again after you ve fallen. The truth? God paid for our sins long ago, knowing the devil would try to use your sins against you. God tells us over and over in His Word that He has forgiven our sins. Though God s payment of our sins is not justification to be nonrepentant, it is justification for us to understand that we are imperfect beings, and as such we must turn to Him when the devil attacks us with negative emotions, ideas and even truths. God doesn t want to bring us down to live in the filth of guilt, He wants to lift us up so we can enjoy our lives as He designed them to be. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1:9)

8 Third Sunday of Lent, Year B The Readings First Reading The Book of Exodus (20:1-17) God spoke all these words. He said, I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall not utter the name of the Lord your God to misuse it, for the Lord will not leave unpunished the man who utters his name to misuse it. Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. Honour your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God has given to you. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour. You shall not covet your neighbour s house. You shall not covet your neighbour s wife, or his servant, man or woman, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is his. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 18: Jn 6:68). Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. The law of the Lord is perfect, it revives the soul. The rule of the Lord is to be trusted, it gives wisdom to the simple.. The precepts of the Lord are right, they gladden the heart. The command of the Lord is clear, it gives light to the eyes.. The fear of the Lord is holy, abiding for ever. The decrees of the Lord are truth and all of them just.. They are more to be desired than gold, than the purest of gold and sweeter are they than honey, than honey from the comb.. Second Reading The First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians (1:22-25) While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom, here are we preaching a crucified Christ; to the Jews an obstacle that they cannot get over, to the pagans madness, but to those who have been called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is the power and the wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. Gospel Acclamation Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! God loved the world so much, he gave us his only Son, that all who believe in him might have eternal life. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! Gospel The Gospel of Mark (9:2-10) Just before the Jewish Passover Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, and the money changers sitting at their counters there. Making a whip out of some cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money changers coins, knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father s house into a market. Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: Zeal for your house will devour me. The Jews intervened and said, What sign can you show us to justify what you have done? Jesus answered, Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews replied, It has taken forty-six years to build this sanctuary: are you going to raise it up in three days? But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the words he had said. During his stay in Jerusalem for the Passover many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he gave, but Jesus knew them all and did not trust himself to them; he never needed evidence about any man; he could tell what a man had in him.
