No. 48 December 2, st Sunday of Advent The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville THE SEASON OFAdvent Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom. With this prayer the Church begins the season of Advent and a new liturgical year. And with this new season, the first of the seasons, the Church acquires a new colour violet the colour not only of penance and preparation but the colour of kings and emperors. Because with this season we are reminded that we live in a time in-between the birth of our Lord and His coming again. Advent is not only a preparation for the celebration of the birth of Christ but also a preparation for the day when our Lord will return. Just as the Archangel Gabriel declared to the Blessed Virgin Mary that the Lord s name would be Emmanuel meaning God is with us we await the day when the Angels will sing again, Look! God s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. So as the Church undergoes these four weeks of Advent, as the violet and rose candles of the Advent wreath slowly burn away to reveal the white candle of the true light of the world, let us join ourselves to that holy preparation by making our confession, by attending one more Mass during the week, by praying the holy Rosary, and by attending to the material needs of the parish and the poor, so that we can make ourselves fit to kneel along side the shepherds and the kings and adore God made man, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, at Christmas.

Carols by Candlelight We will be holding our annual solemn Carols by Candlelights service at Holy Trinity Church on Friday, 21 December at 8:00 p.m. Those who have attended in previous years have said it was one of the most beautiful carols services they have seen and so make sure that you come along that evening as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Our Lord at Christmas. St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Appeal This Sunday at Holy Trinity Church the Granville Catholic Community of Holy Trinity and Holy Family will be supporting the St. Vincent de Paul Society s Christmas appeal in aid of struggling families so that they, too, may share in the joy of Christmas. The appeal is seeking donations of cash or gift cards from stores such as Big W, Kmart, Target, Coles Myer or JB Hi-Fi or grocery cards from Coles or Woolworths. These cards can be given at Mass next Sunday or to the parish office during the week. Or if you prefer to make a donation by credit card please visit the St. Vincent de Paul Society website at donate. We appreciate that at this time of year a lot of demands are made in support of appeals so we are grateful for your generosity and for your kindness. Your gift will help Australians living in poverty this Christmas and will allow them the chance to share in the joy of Christmas. First Friday Evening with the Lord This friday, the first Friday of the month, we continue our devotions to the Sacred Heart of Our Lord with confessions at 6:15 p.m., the holy Rosary at 6:30 p.m., and Holy Mass at 7:00 p.m. Please note that because of the parish trip to St. Mary s Cathedral for the Lights of Christmas there will be no Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament that evening. RED WEDNESDAY Stand Up for Faith and Freedom Thank you to those who participated in the parish s Red Wednesday events by attending Mass and the Rosary and wearing red as we stood in solidarity with persecuted Christians around the world and prayed for the Church. This was an important event for faith and freedom. Thank you, also, to Rosette Chidiac for her work in turning our Facebook pages red for the day as a mark of our stand for those who cannot freely practice the faith.

6 PARRAMATTA CATHOLIC FOUNDATION PLEASE GIVE WITH A GENEROUS HEART TO THE BISHOP S CHRISTMAS APPEAL TODAY The Catholic Foundation appeal will be held next Sunday at each Mass. Envelopes will be made available in the pews or you can make a donation by visiting and help the parish meet its quota. Funds raised support vital ministries including CatholicCare s Houses to Homes service which gives help and hope to homeless young women in crisis. Houses to Homes provides compassion, care and shelter to disadvantaged, homeless young mothers and mothers-to-be who have nowhere and nobody else to turn to. This Christmas, we re counting on your faith, hope and charity to support homeless mothers and children in crisis. Your compassionate gifts and prayers will support the shelter, independent living and parenting skills programmes that homeless mothers desperately need.

8 1st Sunday of Advent The Readings First Reading The Prophet Jeremiah (33:14-16) See, the days are coming it is the Lord who speaks when I am going to fulfil the promise I made to the House of Israel and the House of Judah: In those days and at that time, I will make a virtuous Branch grow for David, who shall practise honesty and integrity in the land. In those days Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell in confidence. And this is the name the city will be called: The Lord-our-integrity. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 24:4-5, 8-9, 10, 14.. v. 1). To you, O Lord, I lift my soul. Lord, make me know your ways. Lord, teach me your paths. Make me walk in your truth, and teach me: for you are God my saviour.. The Lord is good and upright. He shows the path to those who stray, he guides the humble in the right path; he teaches his way to the poor.. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Lord, show us your mercy and love, and grant us your salvation. Alleluia! Gospel The Gospel of Luke (21:25-28, 34-36) Jesus said to his disciples: There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by the clamour of the ocean and its waves; men dying of fear as they await what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand. Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man. His ways are faithfulness and love for those who keep his covenant and will. The Lord s friendship is for those who revere him; to them he reveals his covenant.. Second Reading The First Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians (3:12-4:2) May the Lord be generous in increasing your love and make you love one another and the whole human race as much as we love you. And may he so confirm your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless in the sight of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus Christ comes with all his saints. Finally, brothers, we urge you and appeal to you in the Lord Jesus to make more and more progress in the kind of life that you are meant to live: the life that God wants, as you learnt from us, and as you are already living it. You have not forgotten the instructions we gave you on the authority of the Lord Jesus.
