1 Granville Catholic Church Record Vol. 2. No. 42 October 15, th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville THE HOLY ROSARY The Agony in the Garden The Sorrowful Mysteries The Scourging at the Pillar The Crowning with Thorns The Carrying of the Cross The Crucifixion Pope Benedict XVI said of the Rosary: With Mary the heart is oriented toward the mystery of Jesus. Christ is put at the centre of our life, of our time, of our city, through the contemplation and meditation of his holy mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory. Meditating on the sorrowful mysteries demands that we meditate on our own lives and hold them against the lives and faith of our Lord and the suffering He endured because of our sins. The mystery of the agony in the garden demonstrates our Lord s obedience to the Heavenly Father, saying, not my will but thine, be done. This prayer echoes that of His mother, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word (Luke 1:28). We should trust that even if the Lord permits suffering to come to us, it is for our good and His glory. The mystery of the scourging at the pillar tells us that we were not created for comfort but for heaven. The world will offer you comfort, said Pope Benedict XVI, but you were not made for comfort you were made for greatness. The mystery of the crowning with thorns means we, too, are called to bear persecution. Regardless of the persecution we face in this life, we can take courage in our Lord s words, in the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world (John 16:33). The mystery of the carrying of the Cross reminds us that suffering is part of life and that if we want to be a disciple of Christ, we must deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Christ (Luke 9:23). The mystery of the crucifixion, the most atrocious evil ever committed upon the face of the earth, the execution of the God-man. And yet from this evil God brought forth great good the redemption of mankind. Meditating upon the crucifixion we are encouraged that regardless of the trials and evil we may be undergoing, We know that in everything God works for good with those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

3 HOLY TRINITY PARISH Granville granvilleparish.org.au Holy Trinity Granville Holy Trinity Parish App Catholic Mission Appeal This weekend we hold the annual Catholic Mission appeal in support of the Pontifical Mission Societies. This year s Catholic Mission s Church Appeal focuses on supporting women and children s health by helping missionaries reach out and give life in Uganda and all around the world. If you would like to make a donation envelopes are available in the pews and these can be placed in either the first or the second collection. Today After the 9:30 a.m. Mass Today, after the 9:30 a.m. Mass Maryanne Takchi will be cutting her hair in support of the Leukaemia Foundation s World s Greatest Shave to raise money to help families facing blood cancer and fund vital research. Join us after Mass for a pancake breakfast and sausage sizzle and see Maryanne have her hair cut in support of this very worthy cause! And the Zaiter family have generously donated a toy hamper to be raffled to help raise more money for the World s Greatest Shave. So buy a ticket and enter the raffle for a chance to win this great prize and help Maryanne meet her target of $700 for cancer research. Thank you to Maryanne and to the Zaiter s for their generosity. Thank You and Farewell to Sonia Hoetzinger On behalf of the former Parish Priests and Administrators and all parishioners of both Holy Trinity Parish and Holy Family Parish we thank Sonia Hoetzinger for her ten years of dedicated service and support as parish secretary. We are grateful for her work and we wish Sonia all the very best in the future. Holy Rosary Devotions in October During the month of October we will be honouring Our Lady of the Rosary by praying the Rosary on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Father Campion Memorial Shrine at Holy Trinity Church. And at Holy Family Church at 6:30 p.m. on each day throughout October the Rosary will be prayed (Saturday evenings will be 5:30 p.m.). So there are plenty of opportunities to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, and to pray the Rosary which she gave to us.

4 HOLY FAMILY PARISH eastgranvilleparish.org.au Holy Family East Granville Holy Family Parish App November Masses for the Holy Souls in Purgatory During November, Masses will be offered for the faithful departed the holy souls in Purgatory. It has long been the tradition of the Church that the month of November is dedicated to the holy souls and to praying that they may be delivered from Purgatory and drawn to their eternal salvation in heaven with all the Angels and the Saints. If you would like to have members of your family, friends, or benefactors remembered in these Masses please complete one of the November Mass offering envelopes which are available at the doors of the church and leave them in the box provided. The names listed will not be named specifically at these Masses but rather they will be remembered by the Priest in his Mass. Our parish fair is just a few weeks away! And we urgently need our parishioners to support us! If we are going to hold the fair this year we need your help in three main areas: Food stalls: we urgently need more people to come forward to arrange a food stall. Maybe you can get together with your family and friends and organise a food stall? It would be great to have an international selection of foods as well! Prizes: we need lots of prizes, big and small, for the chocolate wheel. The chocolate wheel runs all day so we need to make sure we have plenty of prizes to give away. Maybe you can donate some new items as prizes or maybe you know a business that can donate to the parish? Drinks: we need plenty of drinks including cans of soft drinks and bottles of water. Holy Rosary Devotions in October During the month of October we will be honouring Our Lady of the Rosary by praying the Rosary at Holy Family Church at 6:30 p.m. on each evening throughout October (Saturday evenings will be 5:30 p.m.). And at Holy Trinity Church on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. we will pray the Rosary in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Father Campion Memorial Shrine. So there are plenty of opportunities to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, and to pray the Rosary which she gave to us. 6 Saints & STUFF How Many Popes are Saints? There have been 266 Popes of the Church and Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II are the 79 th and 80 th to become saints. It will be the first time in the 2,000-year history of the church that two popes will be declared saints at one time. St. Peter was the first Pope and the first to be held as a saint. During the first 500 years of the Church s history 52 of the first 55 popes became saints. But in the last 1,000 years, just seven popes have been made saints. Recent popes are known for canonising in large numbers: Pope John Paul II canonised 482 saints more than all those canonised in the past 600 years. And Pope Francis s first canonisation included 813 people the Martyrs of Otranto who were beheaded by Ottoman soldiers in 1480 after refusing to convert to Islam. CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH Scripture and Tradition 80 Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture are bound closely together, and communicate one with the other. For both of them, flowing out from the same divine well-spring, come together in some fashion to form one thing, and move towards the same goal. Each of them makes present and fruitful in the Church the mystery of Christ. 81 Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit. And [Holy] Tradition transmits in its entirety the Word of God which has been entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit. It transmits it to the successors of the apostles so that, enlightened by the Spirit of truth, they may faithfully preserve, expound and spread it abroad by their preaching. 82 As a result the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is entrusted, does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honoured with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence. CATHOLIC Trivia CARDINALS Pope Francis recently named 17 new Cardinals of the Church. Unusually one of those named is not a Bishop but a Priest, Fr. Ernest Troshani Simoni, 88, one of the last survivors of the Communist persecution in Albania. The title Cardinal comes from the Latin word meaning hinge like the hinge of a door because they not only advise the Pope but also elect the Pope from among their own members. This came from the ancient practice where the Pope was chosen from among the Priests of Rome. Cardinals wear red, the colour of blood because Cardinals are expected to shed their blood for the sake of the faith. And at the funeral of a Cardinal and of a Pope the colour of the Mass is not black or violet as it is for other Catholics but red. At St. Peter s Basilica they will be presented with the red biretta by the Pope; the hat which is the symbol of their rank as a Cardinal.

8 28 th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A The Readings First Reading The Prophet Isaiah (25:6-10) On this mountain, the Lord of hosts will prepare for all people a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines, of food rich and juicy, of fine strained wines. On this mountain he will remove the mourning veil covering all peoples, and the shroud enwrapping all nations, he will destroy Death for ever. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek; he will take away his people's shame everywhere on earth, for the Lord has said so. That day, it will be said: See, this is our God in whom we hoped for salvation; the Lord is the one in whom we hoped. We exult and we rejoice that he has saved us; for the hand of the Lord rests on this mountain. Second Reading The Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians (4:12-14, 19-20) I know how to be poor and I know how to be rich too. I have been through my initiation and now I am ready for anything anywhere: full stomach or empty stomach, poverty or plenty. There is nothing I cannot master with the help of the One who gives me strength. All the same, it was good of you to share with me in my hardships. In return my God will fulfil all your needs, in Christ Jesus, as lavishly as only God can. Glory to God, our Father, for ever and ever. Amen. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our heart that we might see how great is the hope to which we are called. Alleluia! Responsorial Psalm (Ps 22.. v. 6). I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit.. He guides me along the right path; he is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort.. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil; my cup is overflowing.. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord s own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.. Gospel The Gospel of Matthew (22:1-14) Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son s wedding. He sent his servants to call those who had been invited, but they would not come. Next he sent some more servants. Tell those who have been invited he said that I have my banquet all prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to the wedding. But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business, and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and killed them. The king was furious. He dispatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town. Then he said to his servants, The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to be unworthy, go to the crossroads in the town and invite everyone you can find to the wedding. So these servants went out onto the roads and collected together everyone they could find, bad and good alike; and the wedding hall was filled with guests. When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a wedding garment, and said to him, How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment? And the man was silent. Then the king said to the attendants, Bind him hand and foot and throw him out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen.
