1 Granville Catholic Church Record Vol. 2. No. 32 August 6, 2017 Solemnity of the Transfiguration of the Lord The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville We are proud to unveil the new logo for Holy Trinity Parish. With this new logo we draw on the great tradition of the Church which has always used signs and symbols to make visible an invisible reality. These signs and symbols, or heraldry, are both art and science. It is a phenomenon very much a part of the legal and social structures of practically every country on earth. It originated nearly a thousand years ago in Europe and has been carried throughout the world by both migrating peoples of continental Europe and by the Church. These bearings are an expression of individuality but which find themselves embedded in tradition. With this new logo for our parish we have drawn from our Catholic heritage and brought it together in a new way, like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is old and what is new (Matthew 13:52). HOLY TRINITY PARISH Granville O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come. For what earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too. So we preserve the riches which have developed in the Church s faith and prayer, and give them their proper place. This new logo brings together the history of our parish and our schools, and those men and women who have served here for over 130 years, and binds them with symbols rich in tradition. From the use of the Triquetra and the Trinity knot, to the M of the Blessed Virgin Mary surmounted by the Cross of our Lord, to the motto Blessed be the Holy and Undivided Trinity, to the colours these each bear in themselves a meaning, and brought together they give a sense of substance and identity. The depth of these marks and their meaning is articulated on page 3 of this bulletin. Read on and immerse yourself in this new shield for our parish, this new mark of who we are and what we hold to be good and true. This is a celebration, based on ancient symbols, but for today, of the sense we have of ourselves.

3 A New Logo for an Old Parish This week we launch the brand new logo for Holy Trinity Parish. The design and colouring of the logo (or shield as it is traditionally k n own) d raw s o n b o t h t h e theological representations of the Blessed Trinity to which our Parish is dedicated and also the practical aspects of our parish church where we come together to celebrate our liturgies, administer the sacraments and come together to serve at the altar of our Lord. The logo also draws upon our history and acknowledges the service of religious both from the past and the present who have helped build our community. The logo has adapted the current Triquetra which is a three part symbol with a ring which i n t e r l o c k s a n d h a s b e e n traditionally used to represent the unity of the Holy Trinity. Colours The colours of royal blue, red, gold and white also have a special meaning both practically and theologically. From a practical aspect, the star (which itself represents the blessed Trinity by its use of interlocking triangles within triangles) is suspended over the tabernacle in our church and is beautifully painted in these colours. By using these colours for the new logo we draw a connection with the physical infrastructure of the church building, which is also a very unique symbol, not seen in any other church. Theologically, the colour gold represents Godhead, or God the Father, and encircles the outline of the full logo to represent that everything is given by God and for God. The presence of royal blue represents faithfulness and kingship to which we as Catholics affirm that our Lord Jesus, second in the Holy Trinity is King of the Universe. The red symbolises the blood which was shed by our Lord Jesus Christ during his passion for the remission of our sins and our salvation. In addition to this, it also symbolises the Holy Spirit sent down at Pentecost and seen as tongues of fire by the apostles and the fervent love of our Lord by his sending of the Holy Spirit to us and to remain with us. Finally the use of the colour white used in the text symbolises the light and purity of Christ. Community The use of the prayer which is outlined in the ring Blessed be the Holy and Undivided Trinity draws on the history of our parish high school, Delany College, and was the exclamation of blessing shown on the former Patrician Brothers High School crest for over 50 years, from its inception in 1942 until the change in name of the college in Th e a d d i t i o n o f t h i s exclamation reaffirms our faith as Catholics in the Holy Trinity but also acknowledges the wonderful BLESSED BE THE HOLY AND UNDIVIDED TRINITY work which our schools have done in our parish over the years and is fitting that the launch of our logo and the use of this exclamation coincide with the 75 th anniversary of Delany College/Patrician Brothers in our parish. This also helps to acknowledge that our primary school which shares the patron of the Holy Trinity with our parish and our high school come together to build our community and make the presence of our Lord known in Granville. The symbol at the base of the logo is representation of our Blessed Mother Mary and her place as Queen of the Church and Queen of the World. The symbol selected for this is the traditional symbol seen on the miraculous medal created by St. Catherine Laboure in 1830 after a Marian apparition. St. Catherine was told by our Blessed Mother that all who wear the medal would receive great graces. It is our prayer that Our Holy Mother will shower many graces upon our parish and offer us her protection. The M symbol itself represents Our Lady at the foot of the Cross of her Son on the day of his crucifixion. In addition to this we also acknowledge the work and presence of our Vietnamese Sisters under the tutelage of Mary Queen of the World who are also a pivotal part and great support to our parish community. This new symbol of our parish will be seen in all our media from our Facebook page to our website to our parish app to our bulletin. And it will be used on all documents for the parish. In this way we boldly proclaim who we are, founded on our rich 131 year heritage, as we confidently move forward and continue to build and to grow our community. Our Prayer We pray that as we continue to build our parish community that the Most Holy Trinity of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit will renew in our hearts a true and real love of our Lord and his light will shine upon our parish always.

We need your help to keep up the good works of our parish. In the pews you will find a volunteer form listing many of the ways you can help out the parish. We need instrumentalists and singers to add their voices to the parish choir, we need altar servers to serve the Holy Mass, we need readers to read at Mass, we need people to guide our young in the children s liturgy, we need counters to help count the collections, and we need help cleaning the church. If you can help out in any of these ways or if you want to know more information then fill in the form and drop it off in the barrel in the narthex. So many men and women, young and old, give their time and service every week to our parish and it is because of them that our parish thrives. So why not join their ranks and lend a hand to building up our parish. In this we find a way to give back to God all that He has given to us. 6 Saints & STUFF St. Gaetano St. Gaetano dei Conti di Thiene (October 1, 1480 to August 7, 1547), was an Italian Catholic priest and religious reformer, who helped found the Theatines, whose feast day is celebrated this Sunday, August 7. In the Maltese village of Hamrun his feast is celebrated by carrying his statue through the streets and then running it up the steep steps of the church. To check out the festivities go to YS1h8. He is known as the patron saint of Argentina, the unemployed, gamblers, document controllers, and good fortune. CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH Tradition 77 In order that the full and living Gospel might always be preserved in the Church the apostles left bishops as their successors. They gave them their own position of teaching authority. Indeed, "the apostolic preaching, which is expressed in a special way in the inspired books, was to be preserved in a continuous line of succession until the end of time. 78 This living transmission, accomplished in the Holy Spirit, is called Tradition, since it is distinct from Sacred Scripture, though closely connected to it. Through Tradition, the Church, in her doctrine, life and worship, perpetuates and transmits to every generation all that she herself is, all that she believes. [I]ts riches are poured out in the practice and life of the Church, in her belief and her prayer. 95 It is clear in the supremely wise arrangement of God, sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church are so connected and associated that one of them cannot stand without the others. Working together, each in its own way, under the action of the one Holy Spirit, they all contribute effectively to the salvation of souls. CATHOLIC Trivia The Triquetra The triquetra, the symbol adopted by Holy Trinity Parish as the foundation for its logo, comes from the Latin word meaning threecornered, and originally meant a triangle. The symbol has been used in Christian tradition as a sign of the Trinity, especially since the Celtic revival of the 19 th century. When modern designers began to display the triquetra as a stand-alone design, it recalled the three-leafed shamrock which was similarly offered as a Trinity symbol by Saint Patrick. The triquetra has been used extensively on Christian sculpture, vestments, book arts and stained glass. Sometimes it is depicted with an added circle, in or around the three lobes, as is seen in Holy Trinity Parish s new logo. This circle is known as the Trinity knot. The circle emphasises the unity of the whole combination of three forces. It is also said to symbolise God s love around the Holy Trinity. 28A South Street, Granville (02)

8 The Solemnity of the Transfiguration of the Lord The Readings First Reading The Book of Daniel (7:9-10, 13-14) As I watched: Thrones were set in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, the hair of his head as pure as wool. His throne was a blaze of flames, its wheels were a burning fire. A stream of fire poured out, issuing from his presence. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. A court was held and the books were opened. I gazed into the visions of the night. And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man. He came to the one of great age and was led into his presence. On him was conferred sovereignty, glory and kingship, and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants. His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty which shall never pass away, nor will his empire ever be destroyed. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 96:1-2, 5-6, 9.. vv 1, 9). The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth. The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, let all the coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his raiment; his throne, justice and right.. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The skies proclaim his justice; all peoples see his glory.. For you indeed are the Lord most high above all the earth exalted far above all spirits.. Second Reading The Second Letter of Saint Peter (1:16-19) It was not any cleverly invented myths that we were repeating when we brought you the knowledge of the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; we had seen his majesty for ourselves. He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory itself spoke to him and said, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. We heard this ourselves, spoken from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have confirmation of what was said in prophecies; and you will be right to depend on prophecy and take it as a lamp for lighting a way through the dark until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! This is my Son, my beloved, in whom is all my delight: listen to him. Alleluia! Gospel The Gospel of Matthew (17:1-9) Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone. There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him. Then Peter spoke to Jesus. Lord, he said it is wonderful for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah. He was still speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and from the cloud there came a voice which said, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him. When they heard this, the disciples fell on their faces, overcome with fear. But Jesus came up and touched them. Stand up, he said do not be afraid. And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but only Jesus. As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order, Tell no one about the vision until the Son of Man has risen from the dead. We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.
