GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Reflection on Readings IS 5: 1-7; PS 80: 9, 12-16, 19-20; PHIL 4: 6-9; MT 21: One of St. Paul s favorite topics was prayer, and today s reading from his letter to the Philippians is no exception to that. He says, Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. For Paul all topics are appropriate for prayer because we need to share and consult with the Lord about everything. God knows what is on our minds already, of course, but He also desires that we make a conscious effort to communicate with Him on these subjects. In addition, Paul points out that our prayers need to be infused with thanksgiving. We should not just petition the Lord and make requests. It is equally important that we think about, identify, and acknowledge our blessings. We have often pointed out that stewardship is a life of gratitude, a way of living which encourages us to focus on gifts, not on problems and challenges all the time. If we strive to have grateful hearts, our prayers come much more easily, and we tend to be much happier and more upbeat in our lives. The noted author, philosopher, journalist, and theologian G. K. Chesterton is well known in Catholic circles because he converted to Catholicism during his life, and was an excellent conveyor of the faith. In terms of living grateful lives he said, I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. That includes thanks to God. 2 Children's Choir! It's time to get our little ones (grade 1-5) prepared to make a joyful noise! Children's Choir meets on Wednesdays, from 5:15-6:00, in St. Cecilia room. Senior Social Group All seniors are invited to join our group for fun and friendship. We meet for lunch on the second Tuesday of the month and usually have a game day on the fourth Tuesday where we play simple games (dominoes, cards, board games). For more information call Sharon at Christmas Cards for Prisoners The Outreach Committee is participating in Prayer for Prisoners International annual Christmas card drive. The program ensures that those who are incarcerated are reminded of God s love and that others are praying for them during the holiday season. Date Night Being a Perfectly Imperfect Couple! The St. Gabriel Date Night ministry team invites all married and engaged couples of all ages to our October 20th Date Night, beginning at 6:00pm with an American themed potluck dinner. Mercy s Gate Food Collection 1411 pounds was delivered to Mercy s Gate from this months food collection drive. And just like last month, some items were taken directly from our totes to the pantry were the food is distributed. 5 Respect Life The knowledge and realization of how deeply we are loved by God elicits a response of love that simultaneously draws us closer to God and at the same time impels us to share his love. Respect Life Happenings 40 Days For Life The month of October is Respect Life month. One of the activities planned for Respect Life is called 40 Days For Life. St. Gabriel parish will participate by displaying 40 crosses outside from 27 Sep through 5 Nov. You can participate through prayer, fasting, peaceful vigils and community outreach. Adoration "In our self-centered culture and classic American emphasis on work, we often feel we have to accomplish something during our times of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. 7 Weekly faith topic Rosary Paul Turner The rosary is a prayer based on the repetition of the Lord s Prayer, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. During its recitation the believer reflects upon the birth, life, death, and glory of Jesus Christ and the role of Mary. A chain of beads resembling a garland of roses gave the rosary its name. The beads are not essential to the prayer, but they help count through 50 Hail Marys (five decades). The recitation of the traditional 15 decades permitted unlettered Christians to imitate more simply the monastic practice of reciting all 150 psalms in weekly prayer. In addition to meditation, the rosary leads to petition. It implores Mary s intercession in bringing our prayers to God. As she won the cooperation of Jesus at the wedding feast at Cana, so we ask her to bring our needs to the Holy One of God. The precise origins of the rosary are obscure, but it probably formed in imitation of meditative practices of Islam and after the Christian desire for prayer in a language more easily understood than the Latin of the Mass. Its popularity increased after the 15th century due to the zealous encouragement of the followers of St. Dominic, who believed our Lady had miraculously given the rosary to him. Because believers who attended Mass at that time had less to say, do, or see compared with today, the recitation of the rosary during Mass became a popular Catholic devotion much encouraged by religious educators. The popes of the church have continually cultivated the rosary as part of the faithful s private devotion and especially in family prayer. Many Catholics recite it privately or in groups before Mass. The liturgy for the dead calls for a vigil service of Scripture readings on the night before the funeral, but many parishes replace it with the rosary, even though the rubrics make no such provision. Catholics may observe some people praying the rosary during Mass. This was an honored custom for many centuries.
