4 From the Desk of Pastor Jamie Desai Hello, Christ the King! My name is Jamie Desai and I m your new pastor. I thought I would use this newsletter article to tell you a little about myself and some of the goals I am hoping to accomplish over the next year here at CtK. Let me begin with my name. Unless your heritage is from India you might have trouble pronouncing my last name. It is pronounced (Dis-eye) like Doctor, Dis-eye hurts. My father, B.J., came from India in the 1950s to attend medical school and while in the process, met and fell in love with my Norwegian Lutheran mother Lou and the rest is history. They adopted me as an infant from Lutheran Social Services in Minneapolis, MN. I have one sister Ann, also adopted, who lives in Osseo, MN with her husband Ken along with their two dogs, one cat and a hamster. My dad lives in the next town over, Maple Grove, MN and turns 93 this year. Unfortunately, my mom died 14 years ago from ovarian cancer. We lived in Worthington, MN until I was eight years old and moved to Watertown, SD. I grew up there and married my high school sweetheart, Teresa, after she graduated from SDSU in Brookings, SD (I m sorry NDSU fans) and I graduated from a school some of you may know, Concordia College, Moorhead, MN. After college I went on to get my MDiv degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN and began my first church in the little town of Flandreau, SD. I spent the next ten years in larger congregations focusing on youth and family ministry. In 2000 I accepted the call to pastor Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Devils Lake, ND where Teresa and I raised our three sons; Max 28, Sam 25 and Nik 20. The two older boys finished college and live and work in Colorado while Nik is attending Northland Tech College in East Grand Forks, MN. The last five years I ve spent time as the Executive Director of Red Willow Bible camp near Binford, ND and most recently as pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND. Several months ago, I received a phone call from a former Devils Lake church member of ours, Mark Hendrickson. He explained that CtK was looking for a new senior pastor and he asked if I might consider it. I was currently not looking for a new church and politely said, No, thank you. A few months passed by and Mark called again, this time he was a little more adamant about wanting me to give CtK a chance. Again, I said, a little more animated, No, thank you! I don t recall how much time passed when Mark called me for the third time. He said, Pastor Jamie, why don t you just give us a try and go through the call process, then you can let the Holy Spirit decide? How could I say No to the Holy Spirit? And here we are today. My wife Teresa had been teaching at the Annie Carlsen Center in Jamestown and has since accepted a position at Lincoln Elementary School in Fargo teaching Title I. We are currently in the process of selling our home in Jamestown and attempting to buy a house in Moorhead. Until that happens we are living in an apartment with one table, two chairs, army cots to sleep on and our ninety-seven-pound Bluenose Pitbull named Luda. Pray for us! I feel honored to have been chosen as your pastor and I am excited to begin ministry with you all at CtK. My plan this first year is to aggressively begin to get to know all of you. We have Meet and Greets scheduled for Sunday and Wednesday March 3rd and 6th respectively. You could help Teresa and me remember your names better if when you introduce yourself think of a descriptive word that rhymes with your name or something memorable about yourself. I will continue working on ways we can get to know each other better as I begin my ministry with you at CtK. Secondly, I have a passion for reaching those who have not yet been introduced to Jesus and His Gospel as well as those who have been disappointed with the Church and have lost their faith. As important as CtK members are, we are also called to reach out to our neighbors, friends and strangers with the Gospel and show them what a meaningful relationship with Jesus can be like. Will you help me cross over the barriers that keep others at a distance from experiencing Jesus in their lives? As Teresa and I begin this new chapter together with you at CtK, we ask for your prayers, remembering that all of us have fallen short of the glory of God and are not perfect. I am who I am and I can be no other. I may not reach your expectations of what you were hoping for in a pastor or for where you might have dreamt CtK ought to go. What if we both promised to take our expectations of each other and CtK and offer them up to God? We offer our expectations to You, O Lord, and may we begin together with a clean slate, trusting that Your Holy Spirit would guide us to the place which You have set before us, in Jesus name. Amen. May God bless us as we embark on this new adventure together anchored in Christ, Pastor Jamie Desai

6 Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent in the Christian Church. Lent signifies the 40-day period of Jesus wandering in the desert being tempted by the devil. We use ashes to make the sign of the cross because ashes are a symbol of humility and mortality. We use them as a sign of sorrow and repentance for our sins. Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return. We, the staff at CtK, look forward to journeying with you during this season of Lent. LOOKING AHEAD TO LENT AND HOLY WEEK Midweek Lenten Services begin Wednesday, March 6, with Ash Wednesday worship. Services begin at 12:15 in the Sanctuary.
