19 against overwhelming odds, to create a Mughal domain in the rich Indo-Gangetic plain of North India. Their principal adversaries were Afghans who had supplanted Turks and Persians to become the most powerful and widely dispersed foreign Muslim groups in Northern India. Under the Lodi dynasty thousands of Afghan soldiers and traders had migrated from the mountain valley of Afghanistan to the plains of North India. Many, like the founder of the Lodi dynasty, Buhlul Lodi, could trace their origins to the overland horse trade. North India demands for riding and battle horses created a ready market for the hardy horses of the Central Asian steppe. By this point in time many of these Afghan adventurers had settled on the land as local lords who controlled a Hindu peasantry. mÿkj Hkkjrkrhy lokzr izcˇ o lkozf=d vflrro vl.kkjk ijdh; eqflye xv c.k.;klkbh rqdz o if'kz;kauk T;kauh gqldkoys rs vqxk.k eq?kykaps izeq[k fojks/kd gksrs- yksnh?kjk.;kp;k lÿks varxzr gtkjks vqxk.k lsfud o O;kikjh vqxkf.klrkup;k iozr jkaxke/kwu mÿkj HkkjrkP;k ibkjkoj LFkykarfjr >kys gksrs- yksnh?kjk.;kp;k lalfkkid cgyqy yksnh izek.ks vusdtu R;kaps ewˇ [kq"dhp;k?kksms O;kikÚ;kaeË;s 'kks/kw 'kdr-?kksmslokjh o ;qn~/k dkeklkbh e/; vkf'k;krhy esnkuh izns'kkrhy dkvd v'okalkbh r;kj cktkj&isbsph mÿkj Hkkjrh; ekx.kheqˇs fufezrh >kyh- ;k osˇsi;±r ;k vqxk.k lkglhaisdh vusdtu gók Hkwehoj fganw 'ksrdjh oxkzoj fu;a=.k Bso.kkjs LFkkfud vf/kirh Eg.kwu flfkjkoys gksrs- 19 [P.T.O.
