5 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear members of Bhatia Samaj, I take this opportunity to address my fellow Bhatia Samaj members and their families from this desk. It s easy to take freedom for granted when we haven t had to fight for it when it has never been taken from us. On the threshold of our 70th Republic Day, maybe we should take a moment to reflect if we ve justified our freedom as citizens of India, and as a community that India looks up to. The very birth of our community is contributed to a fight for freedom as our forefathers risked their lives to escape the tyrannical barbarians and death in order to keep our holy fire burning and uphold the freedom of their religious identity. Republic Day celebrates the coming into effect of the Indian Constitution which sets the framework of Indian laws, governmental principles/procedures, citizens duties and more importantly our Fundamental Rights the basic human freedoms universally applicable to all Indian citizens irrespective of race, religion, caste, economic status or gender. Ever wonder while there is always someone somewhere screaming louder than Arnab Goswami about how his/her/their Fundamental Rights are being undermined/abused, we ve yet to come across people agitating or frenzied with guilt about not having delivered their Fundamental Duties. Sound familiar yet? As a community, we have put a revolutionary spin on social reformist Tilak s famous line, with, Entitlement is my birthright and I shall have it!! Yes we ve reduced the privilege of freedom into the mediocrity of entitlement. Our ancestors fought for freedom repeatedly first, as Persians who had to escape religious persecution to retain the freedom to live and practice our glorious Zoroastrian religion; and later, as Indians who had to ward off the British to live with freedom and dignity as citizens of an independent, democratic nation. And after all that it boils down to this? A country constantly in political/communal turmoil; and a community disunited in thought, word and deed. OCTOBER-DECEMBER, BHATIA PRAKASH

6 Surely we can do better than that, and what better time to start than now, when India celebrates New Year 2019 and especially exceptional Republic Day. 30 Human Relationship Every person big or small is better than the other in someway or the other. The better person should transfer his knowledge to the other or do something for the betterment of the others. Human Relationship....is the... Success of Life No matter where we are, in the family or office the human relations play vital role, here are some salient points to avoid or resolve tensions in human relationships... Never think too big of yourself and that you are great. Get rid off your ego. Avoid loose talks and foresee the consequences of unnecessary and meaningless talks. Compromising attitude must be always yours. What you think or say may not always be right. Therefore should not indulge in adamant arguments. Avoid narrow mindedness. Do not loose your credibility by passing on false information here and there without knowing the real facts. Superiority complex should not exist in you. Expect things, but only to the extent which is possible. Over expectation causes disappointment. Restrict talk; do not discuss everything to others. Do not believe every thing that you hear. You may hear many things but do not believe everything. Identify silly things and do not exaggerate those. Try to be flexible and adjustable, never be stubborn on an opinion. Do not misunderstand others; try to notice their genuine opinion, action and dealings. Be courteous and give due respect to others. Be pleasant to others even when you are busy. Do not behave as if you don't have time to express smile and pleasant words. Avoid being ill-mannered in front of others. Behave in a cultured manner and talk pleasantly. 33 GURU GOVIND SINGH JI Champion of Hindu National Unity The Bharatiya awakening and spirit of resistance to denationa- lising influences of the foreign Muslim rule which began with Vidyaranya, the, spiritual guide of the founder of Vijayanagar empire, Ramanuj and Ramanand, had its prophets in every part of the country. In North-Western Bharat it was led by Guru Nanak Dev Ji who was the first of a long line of great leaders of thought and action who created a new faith and a robust confidence in the oppressed and suppressed people of this part of the country. Guru Govind Singh Ji who was the last of this magnificent line of Guru's brought this movement for national awakening to a climax and gave it the organisaitonal strength needed for breaking the shackles of foreign rule. Born in 1666 at Patna to Mata Gujri, the devoted wife of the ninth Guru, Shri Tegh Bahadur, Govind Rai had the benefit of early training befitting the role he had to play in his later life. Guru Teg Bahadur became martyr to the cause of national awakening while Govind Rai was only a stripling of ten. It created the deepest impression on his young mind. He became convinced that the righteous cause of Hindu Dharma for which his father gave his 'life needed the backing of force to meet the challenge of Mughal oppression. No wonder, therefore, that he became a devotee of Durga, the "Shakti Rupa" of God. He resembled his great contemporatary of Deccan, Shivaji in this as in many other respects. Both idolised strength individual and collective as a necessary instrument to meet the challenge of foreign oppressor. But unlike Shivaji, Guru Govind Singh Ji was soldier, saint and scholar at the same time. He was Samarth Ram Das and Shivaji woven in one. He created a pholosophy of action and then set himself to put it into action. The "Khalsa" was the instrument he, forged for the purpose, He created the "Panj Piyaras" the five beloved, like the four Agnikul Rajputs, through baptism of blood. They became the model for the Fraternity of saint soldiers he created to carry his mission of saving his Desh.and Dharma from the deadly clutches.: of the' foreign opperessors, to the logical end.. Like the Mavlas who became the 'effective instrument for the fulfilment of the similar mission of Shivaji in the Deccan, OCTOBER-DECEMBER, BHATIA PRAKASH

34 four of the five "panj piyaras" belonged to lower castes of Hindu society. Their dedication to the cause made the" beloved of the highest and thus' helped in creating that equality and unity of outlook in the Khalsa which is so indispensable to a fighting force. His injunction' to the members of the Khalsa to wear long hair (Kesh) Comb (Kangha), half pants (Kacha) iron bangle (Kara), and sword (Kirpan) popularly known as the five K's, has come to be variously interpreted by later his torians and disciples of the Gurus. There has been an attempt,to give religious 'sanctity to these five external syrnbols. They have in fact, now come to be regarded as the distinctive marks of a Sikh" which distinguish him from a non-sikh. But in their origin these external...marks seem to Have been dictated by the practical needs of the situation; to meet which the Khalsa had been created. Long hair knotted on the head served as a protection against sword attack on the head in an age when sword was still the main weapon, of offence. It incidentally gave its wearer more stature and militant look. It may also have been the result of a desire, as suggested by S. Khushwant Singh, to give a disunctive look to the members of the Khalsa, which would make it impossible for them to deny their faith and evade persecution. It also may be due to Govind Singh ji's regard for his favourite deity Durga, who is always portrayed with long flowing hair to give her an awe-inspiring look. Perhaps Guru Ji also wanted the Khalsa to wear a fearful look which may inspire awe in the Muslim soldiers and tribesmen from North- West with whom they had to contend. In any case beard and long hair have since become the main distinction between the Khalsa and the rest of the followers of the Gurus, including Guru Govind Singh ji, who have come to be called Shehj Dharis. It is easy to explain the other K's. Comb was necessary to keep the long hair in order, half trousers made for agility in work and movements, the iron bangle on the right arm served as a defence against a blow on the arm aimed at disabling the soldier; and carrying of sword requires no explanation. May be Guru Govind Singh ji, a great scholar of Sanskrit as he was, had been influenced' in deciding upon these external symbols by the description of a section of Raja Nishidh's army found in "Nal Champu" of Tri vikrarn Bhatt according to which his foot soldiers wore long hair knotted on the head, broad iron bangles on their fore-arm, and half trousers and carried swords in their hands. There has been going on an attempt on the part of certain interested leaders' and writers to interpret the creation of the "Khalsa" by Guru Govind Singh ji as a move to create a new religion distinct and different from prevailing Hinduism. This is not warranted by facts. Guru Govind Singh OCTOBER-DECEMBER, BHATIA PRAKASH

35 ji's writings eloquently speak against any such insinuation. All through his life he regarded the Khalsa to be a "panth", a sect, a warring sect,. created for the protection of Hindu Dharma, as is clear from his following proclamation: liqy txr esa [kkylk iafk xkt txs /ez fganw ldy HkaM Hkkts May Khalsa Panth flourish in the world; may Hindu Dharma awake, and all falsehoods wither. He did try to create esprit de corps and a sense of confidence in the Khalsa by declaring that the Khalsa shall rule the land. That was rendered necessary by the situatron, to meet which the "Khalsa" was created. In this respect the,. Khalsa" was then comparable to "Round Heads" of Cromwell who. like the Khalsa believed that they were the chosen instruments of God to establish the reign of Christ on earth. That sort of religious fervour and faith was necessary to create in the Khalsa the self confidence needed to face the odds. That also explains Guru Gobind Singh ji's proud faith In his men-"i will make a sparrow fight a hawk and a single soldier fight a legion." fpm+;ka uky esa ckt ym+koka rka esa xksfoun uke /jkoka lok yk[k ls,d ym+koka Today when we celebrate the birthday of this great national hero we must try to comprehend the national as against the sectarian character of his life and mission. He created the Khalsa to act as the spearhead of the Hindu society, of which it was a part and parcel. He lived and died a Hindu. a devotee of Durga, a Protector of cows and of the sacred thread and a life-long crusader against the foreign Mughal rule and its allies. He wrote his best known works Dasham Granth and Vichitra Natak -in Hindi. perhaps in prophetic anticipation of the role that Hindi has been called upon to play a vehicle of the national unity of Bharatvarsh- Let us, therefore, while paying our tribute to the memory of the great Guru remember the spirit that prompted him to create the Khalsa. Let us understand the. true character of the Khalsa and adore it as an instrument for the defence of our Dharma and our Motherland.
