Page Two Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1, 2010 FROM THE PASTOR BUDDY S PLACE For the 180 who attended "Remembering Buddy II" last Sunday there was an air of nostalgia. But there was more than nostalgia. There was a lively sense of tradition. Buddy Charles Gries was a rare bird - - a Nighthawk who was a great performing artist with an ever-ready wit and an Early Bird who faithfully led the Rosary and proclaimed the Word of God. Somehow, Buddy managed to "soar" as both Nighthawk and Early Bird. Buddy was deeply devoted to people. He loved God. Whether he was teaching Religious Education classes or entertaining the late night crowd at Acorn, Coq D Or, or Chambers, there was something complex and consistent in his approach. I think it is a rare gift to be successful on two very different "stages. Buddy was successful. It was his love for God that seemed to splay into all the important facets of his life--as a performer, a husband and father, as a friend, and last, but not least, as a special apostle to all sorts of people. Buddy was an artist who cared about other artists, That really showed last Sunday. For two years, some of Chicago s great entertainers who were Buddy s friends have paid tribute to him. There was a special magic last Sunday in the music and memories that were shared. Our Holy Family Room, dimly lit and well air-conditioned, became "Buddy s Place. Buddy s Place, for me, is a happy twilight zone where great music, friendship, and fun take center stage. But, Buddy's Place" is, as I said, more than nostalgia. The dazzling virtuosity of a "four-handed" rendition of S Wonderful" was a high point for me, but there were no low points! The mellowness, the moodiness, the laughter, and even the tears were there for the 180 last Sunday. I am grateful to the stars who, for the second year, put on a great show in memory of Buddy Charles Gries. We were delighted that our special guest artist turned out to be Buddy's wife, Pat, who showed herself to be a "star" in her own right. I am happy to say that there will be a "Remembering Buddy III." If you weren't part of the 180, try to join us next year! If you were with us this year or last year, you won't miss "showtime" at Buddy s Place! We are deeply indebted to Buddy s good friends who have made it possible for the "show" he loved so much not only to go on, but to go on with style! - Fr. Luczak

This past Monday saw a new sign installed near the south entrance of the Holy Family Room. It is part of an ongoing campaign conducted by the Archdiocesan Department of Stewardship and Development to promote planned giving. The purpose of the program is to provide parishioners with a way to give financial support to their parish and to minimize estate taxes. The Director of this program, Richard Goode, has an interesting array of methods that can be utilized to reduce estate taxes and benefit St. Isaac Jogues. If you have questions or would like further information Richard can be reached by E-Mail at rgoode@archchicago.org or by phone at (312) 534 7848. Page Five Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1, 2010 HUMAN CONCERNS Bike Safely: Wear a Helmet Did you know that, on an annual basis, more than 300,00 kids are treated in the nation s emergency rooms for bike-related injuries? Luckily, the rate of a serious head injury from a bike accident can be lowered by 85% when a helmet is worn. So, parents, what can you do to get your kids (and others, too) to wear one when they re riding? Wear one yourself Reward your kids for doing so Always insist that your kids wear one Point out professional athletes who wear helmets when participating in sports Encourage other parents to get their kids to wear helmets Buy a certified Consumer Product Safety Commission bike or multi-purpose helmet from the Trauma Services Office at Lutheran General Hospital. Lutheran General is offering low cost bicycle & multi-sport helmets to the public. The helmets meet or exceed CSA & ASTM standards for safety. The multi-purpose versions have the extra protection required for use with in-line skates & skateboards as well as bicycles. The program offers toddler, youth & adult helmets. All are available for $10 each & payable by cash or check. To get yours, call the Trauma Services Office (8-So.), Monday Friday, at 847-723-6522 (press 1). Ministry of Care Candidates Sought The need for Ministers of Care who bring Eucharist to homebound, hospitalized or confined parishioners is ongoing, yet the number of parishioners trained & available to do this work is decreasing. If you have an interest in ministering spiritually to the sick of our parish, please contact Pat at 967-1094. Wrap Someone in His Love Would you like to gift someone who is ill with a Prayer Shawl? A Prayer Shawl is a wrap that has been woven in prayer by a parishioner & blessed by members of the Ministry. Shawls are not for purchase, but, to help further our cause, we gladly accept offerings. To select one & arrange for pickup, please contact Pat Kellen at 967-1094. The Nurse Is Out but will return Aug. 15 for the monthly Nurse Is In.

Page Six Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1, 2010 PARISH LIFE The Mass Book is now open. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. WHAT DID JESUS SAY ABOUT ADORATION? "come to Me all of you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you." and ''Cast all your anxieties on Him for He cares about you." MT 11:28/1Pt 5:7 Each hour you spend with Jesus will deepen His Divine Peace within your heart. HOLY HOUR THURSDAY EVENINGS 7:00 8:00 P.M. Thank you to the 180 people who attended the second annual concert in memory of Buddy Charles (Gries) and to the helpers who made sure things ran smoothly! A great afternoon of music, singing, and laughter was enjoyed by all. Our deep appreciation to all the performers for their presence, sharing of their talents and the gift of the show! To everyone s delight they said they plan on coming back next year! Sailing Free On the shore Everyone says The sailboat is very pretty On the outside it looks steady That s all they see Adrift on the ocean Far from safe harbor At the beating of an angry storm It s the strength of the keel we don t see That will keep us panic-free Life is surprisingly short To dress it all up for a show On the surface we can glimmer and glow But what lies beneath our soul Is one treasure that can make us whole Things are not always What they appear to be The smile, the work, the gesture Can be a reflection of a guilty pleasure Or a cry from a child longing to mature -Deacon Rod

Page Eight Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1, 2010 SJB PRESCHOOLERS AND KINDERGARTENERS CELEBRATE THE YEAR During the last week of class the 50 preschoolers at St. John Brebeuf received two precious gifts - a personal book of photos taken of them throughout the year and a portfolio of all their drawings. The 45 kindergartners received a special kindergarten shirt and a CD of photos and favorite songs they had learned this year. The preschoolers were very proud of all their accomplishments this year and on the last day of class happily performed some of them for their families. Songs and prayers about God and Jesus started the program, followed by individual presentations of some of the lessons they learned. Ending the program were a couple of dance activities the children enjoyed during the year. Certificates were presented to those going on the Kindergarten. The SJB kindergarteners proudly and energetically sang many of the songs they had learned this year for their parents and also received certificates officially making them First Graders! Parents were amazed and grateful for all the development their children showed and the children were delighted show their skills. Children and parents also formed friendships which may prove to be long lasting and enriching for all. SJB Preschool currently has openings next year in the morning three year class (Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays - 8:20 to 11:20) and the morning four year classes also at 8:20 to 11:20. You may choose 3 or 5 days for your four year old. We also offer full and half day kindergarten. SJB is located at 8301 N. Harlem in Niles. We look forward to welcoming your child. Page Nine Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 1, 2010 GOD'S CAKE Sometimes we wonder, "What did I do to to deserve this'!" or "Why did God have to do this to me'!" Here is a wonderful explanation! A daughter is telling her Mother how everything is going wrong, she's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her and her best friend is moving away. Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and the daughter says, "Absolutely Mom, I love your cake." "Here, have some cooking oil." Her Mother offers. "Yuck" says her daughter. "How about a couple of raw eggs'!" "Gross, Mom!" "Would you like some flour then'! Or maybe baking soda'!" "Mom, those are all yucky!" To which the mother replies: "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!" God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for the good! We have to trust Him and, eventually, they all make something wonderful! God is crazy about you...he sends you flowers every spring and sunrise every morning. Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen. He can live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart. SAINT JOHN MARY VIANNEY Patron Saint of Diocesan Priests August 4 A busy pastor jokingly suggests the secret of John Vianney's holiness: "He died seventeen years before telephones!" Call they didn't, but visit they did, keeping Vianney eighteen hours a day in the confessional. Stories abound of bleeding hearts and exorcisms, but Vianney's first miracle was getting ordained. Difficulty with studies delayed him, prompting the rector's apology to the bishop, "So far to ordain just one, especially this one!" The bishop, who could not know he was ordaining the future patron saint of parish priests, replied, "No burden to ordain one good priest!" In Ars, only an elderly handful attended Mass, "praying," one told Vianney, "for a priest with brains." But he stayed forty two years, fulfilling the promise he made the day he arrived. In a sculpture just outside the village Vianney points skyward: "Show me the way to Ars," he tells a boy, "and I'll show you the way to heaven." To someone who feared there was no heaven beyond the grave, Vianney smiled, "My child, it would have been heaven enough to have lived as Jesus' disciple on earth." Peter Scagnelii, J. S. Paluch Co. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
