We Gather for Bible Study The Adult I Sunday school meets at 9:30 a.m. in room 3. Bob A Word from the Pastor... Rev. Lisa V. Wood Choosing every day to live as Christ lived (selflessly and with compassion), and to love as Christ loved (abundantly and unconditionally) is challenging. We have to somehow reconcile in our own minds, and hold in delicate tension, matters of stewardship vs. generosity; hospitality vs. common sense; resourcefulness vs. compassion. As I left the church mid-afternoon yesterday, I spied a man on the corner of an intersection. He stood looking disheveled and dirty, holding a torn piece of cardboard on which he had written, Homeless need help. God bless. I ve seen people like this on street corners before and I struggle with how to best use my resources to help. I ve yet to settle on an answer. The fact is, that in our 21 st century western world, organizations and agencies are now doing work that the early Christian Church used to do. We cared for widows and orphans who had no means of providing for their own needs. We shared what we had, sometimes selling what we had so we could feed and clothe our brothers and sisters. In the book of Acts, we read that no one did without. But it also says that the little band of new Christians were faithful in their meeting and eating together, worshiping together, and praying for each other. (Acts 4: 32-36) Jesus told his disciples you ll always have the poor with you, but

June 11 (Monday) SUMMER FRENZY - Lunch at Charlie Brown s in Chevy Chase; another hamburger outing; 11:30 a.m. Sarah Reeves, that doesn t mean we throw up our hands in hopelessness. It means we will always have opportunities to demonstrate, in tangible ways, the here-and-now Kingdom of God to those who know poverty of spirit and real soul hunger. Whether we work alongside those serving meals at a local soup kitchen, or assist residents in a homeless shelter in creating a resume and filling out a job application, we are participating in the good work of the Holy Spirit right here in Lexington, KY. (For brevity s sake I only mention these two illustrations. There are so many more that are equally important.) Richard Rhor, a Trappist monk and teacher writes: Those who agree to carry and love what God loves, both the good and the bad of history, and to pay the price for its reconciliation within themselves these are the followers of Jesus (Philippians 3:10-12). They are the leaven, the salt, the remnant, the mustard seed that God can use to transform the world. The cross is the dramatic image of what it takes to be such a usable one for God. Lord, make us, as your church, your usable ones. For the sake of your kingdom. To you be all glory and honor and praise always and in all ways. Your pastor,
