MENU: Grilled chicken breast, marinated in low-fat Italian dressing. Served with mixed green salad and dressing, ranch roasted new potatoes, seasonal vegetables, fresh baked rolls, sweet butter. Mary Anne Pollock, the chair of our Christian Education committee, is leading the way, and a number of our folks will be serving in various capacities this school year. They will be giving real help to kids and teachers. Their badges will identify them as members of our church, and this will surely prove to be one of the best possible ways to reach out to our community... and to young families. There's always room for more, so if you'd like to help, give Mary Anne a call. Brent Walker is a lawyer, a friend, and the recently-retired Executive Director of the Baptist Joint Committee in Washington, D.C. - a group which advocates for religious liberty and church-state separation around the country. In one of his last articles for the BJC newsletter, he talks about the start of a new school year and some guidelines for religious expression on the school campus. I really liked his article, because - despite the naysayers - there are a lot of ways for people of faith to live out their convictions in the public schools. Think about these: 1. Students may pray - alone, in a group, silently, or aloud - as long as

September 17 Men of Faith Breakfast at 9:00 a.m. in Kearns Hall. Our speaker will be former UK Football Coach, Guy Morriss. Call the church office, by Thursday at Noon to sign up. it is voluntary, non-disruptive, and gives other students the right not to participate. 2. Religious clubs may be formed in secondary schools - as long as other non-curriculum related groups are permitted as well. These groups are for students, and outside adults cannot lead them. Teachers may be present, only to monitor the meetings. So, student-formed and student-led is the right formula. 3. Students may display religious messages - orally and on their clothing. And for the most part, they may wear religious garb (think headscarves, yarmulkes, etc.). 4. Students may speak openly about their faith to their classmates - inviting them to attend religious services and events - so long as this free speech doesn't become religious harassment. 5. Religious holidays, music, and artwork - can be teaching tools for helping students learn about various religions. And when the topic of religion naturally arises in the curriculum, it can be pursued as an educational, not devotional, exercise. 6. Students may be excused from lessons - that are in obvious conflict with their religious convictions. 7. Finally, teachers and other school personnel may gather with each other - for prayer and Bible study, as long as the meetings are voluntary and outside the classroom. Thankfully, there are a lot of ways to include religious faith on campus - ways, as Brent says, "that are culturally sensitive and constitutionally sound." Here, near the beginning of a new school year, we can celebrate that!

Please make every effort to attend. New Hymnals The Administrative Board voted to purchase 125 copies of The Celebration Hymnal. If you want to give a hymnal in honor or in loving memory of someone dear to you be sure to fill out a form and be sure to list who it is Given By. The deadline to turn forms in is tomorrow, Thursday, September 15 by noon in order for this information to be included in an insert in the bulletin on September 18. John May will speak on the history and legacy of Liberty Road Community Church. Women of Faith Continue Taking Pecan Orders By Dr. Mary Anne Pollock Remember how delicious the pecans were last year? Now is the time to place your pecan orders so you can create some of the recipes in our recipe book we provided last year. One pound packages of mammoth halves will again be $12.00, the same as the past few years! These pecans are the freshest that you will find anywhere since harvest will begin at the end of September and pecans will be shipped in late October or early November in time for holiday cooking AND gift giving. You will not find this quality and freshness in retail stores!! You only have two more Sundays to place your orders. A table will be set up in the entry way on September 18 and 25 so you may place your orders. Order forms are also available from any member of Women of Faith. The sound of an uproar of kingdoms, of nations gathering together! The LORD of hosts is mustering a host for battle. Isaiah 13:4 Since retirement days have begun, I now may sit on the porch any time of the day. The sirens rushing to the Med Center, the heavy trucks delivering supplies, the tree trimmers, gardeners, and lawnmowers join a chorus of workers who carry on the day-to-day activities that make our lives run smoothly. Recently we ve been watching a series of television shows on World War II. David and I were small children during that period of American history. When I was old enough to realize that my Dad flew airplanes, I would stand outside and look for planes so I could wave to him. Only now have I begun to understand the destruction of the bombs and the everyday terror that fell on the European countries. People living in a home one minute, and in rubble the next. People alive one minute and dead the next. How fortunate for us living in the United States that we have been spared. Our only exception is 9/ll. The sounds I hear on the front porch are to be cherished. They are the sounds of peace.

Pray for the family of Marge Dolby who passed away recently. Marge is the sister of Jane Eberwein. Pray the family of Glenna Graves, who passed away on September 8. She was the sister of Andrea Watson. Pray for Larry Hall, friend of the Smither family, who had a 5 bypass open heart surgery weeks ago. Doctors discovered last week that his sternum was separated about 1 1/2 so they had to do surgery again and wire it back together. Now he has MRSA in the incision. Pray for Jim Hyde who is dealing with painful sciatica and also severe diabetes. Pray for healing and strength. He has been in and Thank you from a Military Mom!

7 out of the hospital recently. Pray for Paul Johnston, age 84 who lives in Ft. Worth, Texas. He is Judy Brand s brother. The infection in his leg is better and will not require surgery. Please pray for Paul that he will be able to gain some strength from rehab. Pray for Shannon Mirzaian, age 47, daughter of Buddy and Linda Hogan who is fighting an aggressive form of cancer. Pray for Liz Berryman Peters and family in the recent death of her sister, Geatta Ballard. Pray for Joyce Reaguer who is now home. Pray also for her husband, Ron, who lovingly supports and cares for her. Pray for Rebecca who is dealing with breast cancer and limited options for treatment. Susan B. requests prayers on her behalf. Pray for Luke and Natasha who recently found out that their baby had died in utero. Their hearts are broken. (Smither) Pray for Bonnie Richardson, sister-in-law to Charlotte Krasinski. Pray for Gene Strassner who continues to wait on tests regarding the inside of the esophagus. The cancer is still there, but the CT scan shows that it is localized and is nowhere else in the body. Gene and Nancy are thankful for each day as it is a gift from God. Pray for a young mother carrying triplets who has lost one of them in utero due to infection, and needs prayers for the other two little ones to be born healthy. They sound Christian like something you might find in the Bible. We ve all heard these words. Maybe we ve said them... Beginning September 25 Everything happens for a reason. God helps those who help themselves. God won t give you more than you can handle. God said it, I believe it, that settles it. Love the sinner, hate the sin. They capture some element of truth, yet, according to Hamilton, they miss the point in important ways. These topics will make for substantial Sunday School discussions, blending our time in the Bible with current events and personal experience. Come join us any or every Sunday.
