The Pastor s Pen by Dr. Bill Turner, Senior Pastor Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To our Social Committee members, to Sean, and to all those who helped to set up, cook, and clean up for our second Sunday potluck. Faith Fellowship folks work hard to make every Sunday special - and these added events always bring out the best in all our volunteers. So thanks to everyone who helped make it a good day! Our next Sunday Potluck is scheduled for August 9th, then our Church Picnic happens in September - so mark your calendar and plan to be with us. Now, one more follow-up to the Supreme Court's decision on same-sex marriage and its impact on congregations - again, drawing on the legal expertise of the Baptist Joint Committee on Religious Liberty. The ruling does not decide religious questions about marriage. While religious liberty rights were not at issue in this case, the Court's decision... respectfully acknowledged that some deeply held and long-standing religious beliefs oppose same-sex marriage. This respectful treatment of dissenting views is important in the protection of religious liberty, without harming the rights which the Court affirmed. The conversations will continue, and legal conflicts will be worked out over time - probably not overnight. Threats of losing 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt status have been highly exaggerated. Following the ruling in the Obergefell case, some have asserted that churches and other religious organizations will lose their tax-

2 Living Faith Sunday school meets at 9:30 a.m. in Room 2. We Gather for Worship Sunday Worship: 11:00 a.m. Children s Church: 11:15 a.m Child care is available. We re Looking Forward July 15 (Wednesday) - Tour of Ashland - The Henry Clay Estate at 120 Sycamore Road in Lexington and Lunch at The Ginkgo Tree - Meet in the parking lot of Ashland by the Ice House at 10:45, tour begins at exempt status if they oppose same-sex marriage. Remember, that churches have long decided who to/not to marry. In following their own rules about that, there has been no legal threat; this ruling does not change that. The ruling does not create automatic access to religiously-owned facilities. Whether buildings - including sanctuaries - owned by churches or other religious organizations are affected depends on how such buildings are used and marketed, as well as the specific non-discrimination laws of a specific community or jurisdiction. Again, churches may limit the use of their sanctuaries to weddings consistent with their religious teachings. America protects religious liberty in a distinct way. It is a way which allows people with vastly different beliefs to live peaceably with each other. People with little in common often want the same things when it comes to religion, such as the ability to believe and act in accordance with their own conscience, equal rights under the law, and a government that does not take sides in religious disputes. While religious liberty is not absolute, robust religious liberty protects the precious freedom to believe without governmental coercion and, insofar as other people's rights are not trampled, to act in accordance with those beliefs. And remember, all people - straight, gay or transgendered - are welcome at Faith Fellowship. Is there somebody you can bring to worship this week? Rahab's Rope - an outstanding musical group - will help lead our service. Are your prospects for a satisfying result enhanced once you concentrate on crunching the numbers? Of course, these questions have nothing to do with the oil spill in the Gulf. We re referring to the Silent Killer Your Blood Pressure. Lucky for you we are blessed with members/volunteers who will check it regularly and record your progress, or lack thereof. One of these volunteers is Nancy Perkins Robinson (pictured above), a registered nurse. After seeing a product of a good mountain education, Nancy came from Williamsburg, KY to Lexington to study nursing at Good Samaritan Hospital s School of Nursing. As part of her training she studied at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, DC; and Hazelwood s T.B. Hospital in Louisville. Twenty-five years of continuous employment with Good Samaritan Hospital provided an opportunity to meet her future husband who made runs for the Lexington fire department to "Good Sam s Emergency Department while she worked there.

9 address, new assignment Her address is Faith from the Front Porch Current Administrative Board for Ron Reaguer, Chair Mitch Borders, Treasurer Andy Berry, Board Secretary Roger Blair,Jackie Bondurant, Denny Bonner, Charlotte Krasinski, Kinch Query, Bob Quisenberry, Sarah Reeves, Adam Rudder, Sue Thompson, Patricia Wilson Volunteer Skill Bank Contact Information Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Church Office: Other times, call: Liz Berryman: Andy Berry: If they cannot be reached, call: Mary Anne Pollock: or by Jackie Bondurant And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased." Luke 2:13-14 There are a lot of front porches in our neighborhood. Even the fourplexes have individual porches. For a while, our neighborhood was relatively quiet with little or no activities on the porches. Recently, the activity has increased. Our neighbors across the street not only have the cushioned chairs and a sofa on their porch, but they also have a heavy canvas screen that keeps the afternoon sun away. Another neighbor actually built a large porch across the front of the house and filled it will comfortable furniture and lamps for day and evening lounging. In fact, their furniture was so great, it promptly got stolen the next week! So now, they have the furniture bolted to the floor. One evening, after a particularly important basketball game (which Kentucky won), I went running to the front porch to see who I could find to cheer. Suddenly, there were people on all the porches, yelling Go Cats and sharing in the excitement of the moment. I seem to recall the shepherds in the field and the angels in the sky and I am humbled that I don t get as excited about the good news of Christ as I do about UK basketball.
