1 Christ Episcopal Church Chronicle for October 2014 Corner of Ridgecrest Road and Franklin Turnpike, P.O. Box 10355, Danville, VA Church Phone: (434) Fax: (434) No Stew Stew The Church Homecoming/Picnic will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5. The service will be at 10:00 instead of 9:00. The church is providing the meats. Please bring potluck dishes as sides and desserts to enjoy this great chance to fellowship with our friends. We will be holding a Non- Stew Sale again this year. Like last year, rather than slaving over a vat of stew all night, we will put a "stew pot" on the table in the foyer and encourage everyone to donate. How many quarts of stew would you buy? Make your donation! The "stew pot" will be put out this Sunday, Sept. 28 and will stay out till the beginning of November. Church Security Update The ECW will be hosting a yard sale on Saturday, October 4th at 7:00 AM They are currently collecting items for the yard sale. Please bring your items on Sundays and if you "need to drop off during the week please contact or Janis Chenery to arrange a drop-off time. The ECW will need lots of help before, during and after the event. Please speak to Janis if you are able to help in any way with the yard sale. I received a robo call from the Sheriff s Office informing me that there has been a rash of targeted break-ins of county churches. There were 5 last night (9/17). To this end I have extended the timed lights to six a.m. and have turned on the porch lights as well as some lights in the garage area. Until further notice the most practical thing to do is to leave the lights as is. We may need to replace a few bulbs and pay a buck or two more for electricity but if this prevents a break in it is well worth it. In the mean time if you see something, say something. Peace, Shaun
2 The ECW is very busy this month preparing for the annual yard sale to be held Saturday, October 4th at 7:00 AM. They would like the help of the men on Sunday, September 28 to set up the tables and anyone that can help on Friday, October 3 to bring the items in and get ready for this event. They are winding down the silent auction sale Sunday, September 28 so be sure to bid if there is something you want from the table. The ladies of our church are also very excited to be hosting the installation of Nancy Sands as the new President and Lu Sullivan as the Secretary of the Diocesan ECW. They will serve a two year term. They will be holding a luncheon, meeting and church service on Saturday, October 18th. This event is for men and women alike. The cost of the luncheon is $10 and please sign up in the narthex or let Nancy know so they will have enough food for this event. It is an honor to have our members involved at the diocesan level and we should support Nancy in this next adventure. The ladies have tentatively set a date for their annual Christmas party for Friday, December 5th, stay tuned for more information on this fun time of fellowship. They are also planning to help a family with food and gifts for the holidays to reach out into the community for those in need. Please continue to check the newsletter and for further information as we approach the holidays. The ECW will be installing new officers for the 2015 year in December. If there is anyone interested in being an officer in our ECW please speak to Janis about this opportunity. We are starting the fall session of Sunday School with lessons on Communion. The young children will be celebrating their First Communion on Sunday, November 2. The Sunday School children are practicing a few new songs to share with the congregation. Our young people are enjoying being able to learn about God and share in fellowship. I appreciate your faithfulness to our Sunday School program. -Kristi Ross Communion Reception For the actual reception of the bread, Cyril of Jerusalem, writing in the fourth century, said one is to with the left hand create a throne for the right which is to receive the king. The most common way of receiving the bread is still to put the right hand, palm up, over the left. (It is not wrong to reverse the order.) - Taken from This Bread & This Cup Leader s Guide ECW Prayer Almighty God, we pray that You will bless our work in mission and ministry in the world. Help us to pray fervently, labor diligently and give liberally to make known the power of your love given through your son Jesus. Let us not forget the lessons from the past nor fear the challenges of the future. Anoint us with your grace and shine in our hearts as we reflect your light throughout the world. -Amen. ECW Logo The Cross represents Christ and our service to Him in the world. The Circle stands for our hope for wholeness in our lives. The out-flowing lines from the center depict the many works of the Episcopal Church Women going out into the world. The intertwined lines represent our lives centered in Christ.

We still have lap robes and some prayer shawls on hand, but we always are looking to make more. At the moment we have limited amount of yarn. In the past you all have been most generous. To make a prayer shawl it takes 5 skeins of yarn, and the yarn we use is $3.99 a skein. If you can help it would be gratefully appreciated. You may give your donation to either Molly or Lu Sullivan. Again without your generosity this ministry would not be able to continue. Deadline for the November Newsletter is October 22, Please send all news to chirstchurch.news@gamewood.net or John & Kristi Ross. On Oct 3 at 2:30 Kings' Grant Chapel in Martinsville and Oct 5 at 4:00 Stratford House in Danville Carolyn Smith, Soprano and Gary Sullivan, Tenor will perform an afternoon of music of Victor Herbert and Sigmund Romberg. It is a 45 minute program and there is no admission charge.
