LITTLE FLOWER SOCIETY ENROLLMENT Lynn Leclerc given by Tom Eames MEMORIAL FUND ENROLLMENT Frank and Bernie Wilk given by Helen Barkis Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Thursday, September 24, was a historic day for our nation and for the Catholic Church. It was the first time that a Pope addressed the United States Congress. By invoking four significant Americans Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton Pope Francis affirmed the dignity of the human person in all aspects and all stages of life. four individuals and four dreams: Lincoln, liberty; Martin Luther King, liberty in plurality and nonexclusion; Dorothy Day, social justice and the rights of persons; and Thomas Merton, the capacity for dialogue and openness to God. Pope Francis made it clear that respecting human dignity cannot be limited to economic productivity and success. For a nation to be great it needs to promote and protect all aspects of the human person. Everyone must be free to pursue their dreams. But the dreams that truly fulfill the capacity of the human spirit are those which bring peace and harmony, social justice, and spiritual growth. Respecting human dignity means protecting everyone s right to forge relationships of compassion, mercy, and love. Pope Francis also made it clear that for a nation to be great it must defend the rights of all. By using no qualifying adjectives for all, Pope Francis declared the dignity of the human person at every stage of life the unborn, the sick, the suffering, the physically and mentally challenged, the elderly, the dying. There are no haves and have nots when it comes to human rights. Every person has innate rights from the moment of conception, rights that continue to natural death and all eternity. At the conclusion of his address, Pope Francis said, A nation can be considered great when it defends liberty as Lincoln did, when it fosters a culture which enables people to dream of full rights for all their brothers and sisters. Today, as we celebrate Respect Life Sunday, we dream and work for the time when the full rights of all God s children, from conception to natural death, will be respected and honored. May the Peace of Christ be with You Always, Father Tauber PERSONAL IMPRESSIONS OF POPE FRANCIS VISIT: It was a surreal experience being with the Holy Father. Words cannot begin to describe the emotions I felt as I saw his motorcade pull into the Seminary for the first time. He and I made eye contact as he walked into the Seminary Chapel on Sunday morning. I could really feel his paternal love and affection for me. I was really blessed by God to be part of this historic visit. Jeremy Leidich, Parish Seminarian It was a rich experience as a Catholic and as an American to be present when our Holy Father spoke to Congress for the first time in history. Monsignor Alfred A. Schlert 3
