2 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, There is a dramatic contrast in our two Gospels today. We begin with a crowd exuberant with joy as they greet their Messiah. As Jesus enters Jerusalem, they shout Hosanna! which translates into English as God Saves! They clearly proclaim Jesus to be their Savior. But in less than a week, many of the people from that same crowd are now shouting Crucify Him! What caused this reversal? We might try to blame it solely on the manipulation of the religious authorities, but that is too simplistic of an answer. After Jesus entered Jerusalem, He continued to teach His disciples and the crowd the cost of discipleship. To be His follower requires us to take up our Cross and follow after Him. The Cross we are required to take up is His commandment of love: to love God with our whole heart, body, mind and soul and to love all our brothers and sisters with respect, compassion and mercy. To follow Jesus requires a radical change in our way of living: we are not to live for ourselves, we are to live for others. The demand to love as God loves was unacceptable to most of the crowd. They did not want the responsibility and the accountability that true discipleship requires. They wanted Jesus silenced so they could go on living as they pleased. Jesus bothered their conscience, so they wanted him gone. Our Holy Week liturgies remind us that discipleship does come at a cost, it requires sacrifice. But these liturgies also remind us that discipleship leads to glory. Jesus promises us that if we faithfully follow after Him, He will give us a share in His glory, He will lead us to Heaven. The crowds could not bear the cost of following Jesus, but the disciples recognized, by the grace of God, that only by following Jesus would they find the lasting peace and joy for which they longed. They were not fools. They knew it required sacrifice, but it was a sacrifice worth making. Our Holy Week liturgies place before us a choice: will we be part of the crowd or will we be a disciple of Christ? Through the Intercession of Our Lady of Fatima, May the Peace of Christ be with You Always, Father Tauber LADIES GUILD EASTER BAKE SALE March 24 and 25 following all Masses Hope you can join us for this delicious event and treat yourself to some free coffee!
