2 Dear Friends, 16 th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 16/17, 2016 My sincerest THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the School of the Cathedral Annual Fund this year! $74,219 was raised through the Annual Fund! And, with additional gifts made to the school, a total of $109,219 was designated for the School of the Cathedral this year! Thank you to Kristen and David Kinkopf and Francine and Jim Sellinger, chairs of the Annual Fund, for their leadership and efforts that led to the success of the Fund. Also, a huge thank you to all of the Phon-a-thon volunteers this year: Jill Connor 02, Ginna Kelly 90, Kristen Kinkopf, Michael McGeady, Linda Murphy, Lauren Russell-Wood, Francine Sellinger, Jim Sellinger, Mia White, and Whitney Wilder 01. Now, what are you doing Saturday, September 10? That day, our parish is competing in the 10th Semi-Annual Dragon Boat Races at the Inner Harbor. This is an event that raises money and awareness for all the work of Catholic Charities. The proceeds from the race are a critical source of operating funds for the 80 programs and 160,000 people of all backgrounds who Catholic Charities serves throughout Maryland each year. More than 30 organizations will participate in this year s race, each of them paired with a program of Catholic Charities, to facilitate a relationship that will endure beyond the race. Our parish has been teamed with Gallagher Services, a wonderful program that provides support and care for adults with intellectual disabilities. So we have a boat and a crew, and we are preparing now to shock the world with a victory over the super-powers: M&T Bank, Whiting-Turner, BGE (who doesn t want to beat BGE?) and last year s winner, T. Rowe Price. Three members of our crew are alumni of Villanova University, so people around the Diocese are already talking about us as a Cinderella team. We have a crew of 25 rowers, headed up by Captain Katie Pinheiro and Cruise Director Ginna Kelly; and we will be steered by Amanda Mainello, who rowed at the University of Maryland. So, yes, we are in it to win it! On a serious note, though, the whole event is for a great cause, and in the next two months, please watch and listen for ways to contribute that are just as important as paddling. We will have a spirit team which will create a theme for our boat, our team tent, t-shirts, crazy hats, etc really as much as we can dream up creatively. You may also contribute directly to support our team and Gallagher Services at by searching for the Cathedral team via the orange button in the right-hand column. We hope a great number of parishioners will join us on September 10th to be part of this exciting event for our city and state, made possible by the whole Catholic family of Baltimore. Come together for fun and a great, common goal. So, between now and then, please keep watching and listening for opportunities to engage and support. Please join me this week in praying for the repose of the souls of Regina Eagers and Brian Bergkamp. Lastly, I invite you to share our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with those around you. We ve had quite an increase in social media engagement, and our community has responded quite positively to the news. In fact, we even had someone reach out about RCIA this week! You never know who might be reading when you share our posts on your page. -Father Andrew
3 Last weekend Offertory Collection $12, Faith Direct $16, Poor Box $ Food Program $67.00 Preserv. Trust $ Attendance 942 Faith Direct Faith Direct is a convenient way to support Cathedral of Mary Our Queen using direct debit for your offertory giving. Register: CMOQ Code: MD500 Thanks to our parishioners who already use Faith Direct! Thank you for your support of the Annual Fund! A total of $109,219 was raised for the School of the Cathedral this school year! The Annual Fund is providing critical support for the following areas: 1. Address the ongoing critical need for grants and aid for families that require financial assistance to provide their children with a Cathedral education. 2. Upgrade the school s network infrastructure and capacity to support the technology utilized in our classrooms. 3. Fund a study to assess improvements necessary to modernize the school s cafeteria kitchen. Thank you for your generosity and making all of this possible! How do you show appreciation to someone? Perhaps a verbal Thank you. Maybe for something more important a handwritten note. But if you really want to show your appreciation to someone, I m guessing you give them a gift. When we gather to worship, we also have a chance to give. In the church, we often speak of giving your time, talent, and treasure. We give of our time when we worship and when we serve. We give of our talent when we offer our skills to support worship and the community. We give of our treasure when we contribute financial resources to the church. After hearing God speak to us in the Liturgy of the Word, we prepare to celebrate the gift God gave us in his Son: For God so loved the world that he gave (John 3:16). We bring forth the bread and wine and (at least on the weekends) take up a collection. During this action, we have another opportunity for music. Music here can be an offering by one, a few, or everyone gathered. Like the Entrance and Communion times in the Mass, there are Latin chants that were prescribed for the offertory before Vatican II. While these can still be used, they often are too short to cover the time necessary, so we use other options at the Cathedral. During Ordinary Time, there may be an instrumental piece, a vocal solo or a choral piece. This becomes a chance for different people to offer their talents to God. At other times, we all offer our gifts in song, no matter how great or small, by singing a hymn together. Jesus points out the widow who gave her only two coins as offering. Her gift was surely not simply in appreciation but also an expression of her faith. Whether you feel your voice is worth only two small coins or much more, will you sing in offering to God? After all, God gave you that voice, worship is a time to give in return.

Marella Family Peter Lee Hospitality is a ministry which can be a both a blessing and a challenge. The blessing is in being with people whose company we love and enjoy which can energize and refresh us. The challenge is in our preparations for it, as the second part can take away from the first part. It is a challenge of balancing our preparations with being present to our guests, as the latter is the key focus of hospitality. We have two examples of hospitality in our readings today. In the first Abraham tends to his guests, thinking not of himself, but rather focusing on his service and the comfort of his guests. In the second, Martha gets upset because she compares her work to what Mary is doing. Both of them are trying to receive Jesus, but he rebuffs Martha s complaint because she is anxious and worried about many things. She has lost her focus on the point of her service which is her relationship with Jesus. We, too, can lose the focus of our service. We may get over invested in our preparations, or worried about what others might think, or focused on impressing others or led to compare ourselves with others. All of these are distractions. In them we lose our focus and become anxious and worried about many things. Our focus needs to be on relationships and how our preparations enable them. We may not have The Lord in our midst, like Abraham or Jesus like Martha and Mary, but it is a holy encounter of relationship. It is the better part from which our preparations should not distract us. When we connect with our neighbor by our hospitality, God is present. It is in giving of ourselves, freely, without distraction that we receive the graced gift of refreshment from our guest. Like Abraham, we never know the gift that that divine encounter may bring to our lives. Join us at the Monthly Mass for the Sick Friday at 5:30pm. Please bring written names of the infirm you would like to include. There is no anointing of the sick. We would like to congratulate and welcome Douglas Warren Hosford, Grace Ann Pyzik, and Dorothy Mae Parks on celebrating the sacrament of baptism. This week, we honored the life of Regina Eagers. We keep her family in prayer as we ask for the repose of her soul. May she rest in peace. Inquiry sessions take place every Thursday from 7pm to 8:30pm.
