2 13 th Sunday in Ordinary Time June 25/26, 2016 Dear Friends, Bishop Madden s next prayer-walk asking God s intercession to bring peace to our city will take place this Thursday, June 30 th at St. Francis Xavier Parish at 1501 E. Oliver Street. The evening will begin with a light supper at and conclude at 7:30pm. St. Francis Xavier Parish has a rich history as the first parish in the United States established for black Catholics. The neighborhood surrounding the parish struggles with crime and addiction, and there are several sites of recent violence only blocks from the church. Over 70 individuals have been participating in these walks, including members of our parish. There is no need to register. There is a great learning and service opportunity for teenagers this summer with our Service Learning Camp sponsored by our Youth Ministry. The camp takes place the week of August 1 st. The mornings are dedicated to service at various sites (e.g., Ronald McDonald House) and the afternoons are for fun activities. The camp concludes with a trip to Hershey Park on Friday. For registration and complete details, go to or contact our Youth Minister, Siobhan Cooney at scooney@cmoq.org. This is a great opportunity for getting service hours for Confirmation or school. AN INVITATION: Interested in being a Catholic or at least talking about it? Been coming to Mass for years with your family but never joined the Catholic Church? Were you baptized Catholic but never received First Holy Communion or Confirmation? Or, have you simply been away from the Church for a while years even? If you or anyone you know answers yes to these questions, we (Msgr. Woy, Fr. DeFusco, or Chris McCullough) would like to speak with you about exploring a closer relationship with Jesus and His Church. Give us a call at Please keep the repose of the soul of Kyle Britt Kirby, whose funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, in your prayers. Have a Good Week! Msgr. Register: CMOQ Code: MD500 Thanks to our parishioners who already use Faith Direct! 1. Msgr. Woy and Fr. Andrew do! Will you join us in giving through Faith Direct? Please join our parishioners who use Electronic Fund Transfer via Faith Direct for their giving. See information to the left for how to sign up, or call (toll-free) for more information. Last month, Monsignor Woy outlined a series of steps to improve the sound system in the Cathedral church. A generous parishioner has offered to match gifts for our new sound system. As a parish community, we will need to raise $11,000 to complete the project. Will you help us to meet our challenge? Call the Parish Office at for more information. Photo courtesy of John J. Coyle, Jr. The celebration of Mass follows a standardized ritual. I still remember how impressed I was when I attended a Roman Catholic Mass for the first time during college. Everyone took the same postures and responded without following any worship aid! Diving deeper into Roman Catholicism, I discovered the rich variety possible in the ritual of Mass. Some of the first choices appear right after the gathering song. Singing brings us together and helps us become one community gathered for worship. Between the opening song and when we sit to hear the word of God, several different actions take place depending upon the season, celebration, and preferences of the presider: 1. Penitential Rite Here we acknowledge our need for redemption and call upon God to have mercy on us. There are three different forms for this in the Roman Missal. In general, we do not sing here. 2. Kyrie eleison The third option for the penitential rite incorporates the Kyrie, so this cry for mercy generally only appears if one of the other options for the penitential rite is used. If included, we might sing it. 3. Sprinkling Rite Especially during the Easter season, the blessing and sprinkling of water to recall Baptism may take place. Choosing this option replaces the first two. Music generally accompanies the sprinkling. 4. Gloria included on Sundays outside of Lent and Advent as well as on special solemnities and feasts. The Gloria is another chance for us to express our praise and thanks to God in song. Have you noticed the different options in the introductory rites? As I journeyed into Catholicism from another tradition, I also became the person responsible for implementing those choices. Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that fully conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. (Sacrosanctum Concilium, #14) It is my hope that by offering these notes, you will be better able to sing and give glory to God.

This week, we honored the life of Kyle Britton Kirby. We keep his family in prayer as we ask for the repose of his soul. May he rest in peace. This section was updated as of this past Tuesday. To include your loved one s sacrament, please Beth Awalt, Communications / Social Media Coordinator, at beth.awalt@cmoq.org. Next week, we will all gather with family and friends to celebrate our day of independence as a country. It is a time to revel in and call to mind the freedoms our country provides for its inhabitants. As Americans, freedom is a value we cherish: freedoms of the press, religion, speech, assembly, petition, to bear arms, and so on. These liberties get questioned from time to time, especially after events like the recent Orlando massacre, but they are also liberties that set a tone for the world and are that which others seek in coming to this country. They are part of what make the country great, but only part. An equal and important part of those freedoms are we who embody them or we the people. Yet, we all have experienced a range of how those values are embodied and how those freedoms can be exploited by certain residents of our fair nation. Regardless, as Christian residents, we have a higher call. First we are God s Children/Catholics, and then we are Americans. Freedom, according to today s letter from St. Paul, should not lead us to license or living in the flesh by way of our impulses or desires, but rather to a conscious and intentional loving of our neighbor as ourselves. In this way we live unto the Spirit of God. In this way we deepen our discipleship and our following of Christ, by our care and love for each other. As we look t o o u r J u l y 4 th celebrations, let us keep in mind that it is how we treat each other and show love to our neighbor that not only makes us Christians, but also makes our country great.
