2 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 9/10, 2016 Dear Friends, Some of you have asked about this passage from last Sunday s homily. It is too bad; we do not really know to whom to attribute it. Though it is often credited to Alexis de Tocqueville in his masterpiece, Democracy in America, it does not appear there. Whoever said it, I hope you agree it gives us a great mission to make our aim as Catholics and Americans. It reads: I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her beautiful harbors and her ample rivers -- and it was not there; in her fertile fields and boundless forests, and it was not there; in her rich mines and her vast world commerce, and it was not there; in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution, and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great. As promised, there are a number of parties coming our way this July at Mary our Queen s house! Our Altar Servers and Children s Liturgy leaders kicked off the summer with their picnic in June, on the front plaza of the church. We had food and games out on the front lawn, thanks to our school nurse Catherine Lobo, and Ryan Kelly hosted a fireworks display! I can t promise that the next ones will be as fun as that of course, I am kidding. Find the one that fits you! Family Fun and Movie Nights: Saturday, July 16; Saturday, August 6; and Friday, August 19 all at 7:30pm. We ll have a big screen and big fun! Young Professionals Barbeque, Saturday, July 16 on the front plaza, after 5pm Mass. We are a growing group, so come and bring someone new. Men s Club Barbeque, Saturday, July 30 at the Parish Center, after 5pm Mass. We want to celebrate our first year together! We will present our calendar for the next year, and we will empty the Rectory s coolers of their beverage contents. You will notice there are still some dates open and some groups not precisely represented by these parties. Please, if you have the desire to start a group of your own to gather people for prayer, service, and community, let us know. Our Lord sends us out two-by-two. Most of our parish groups have two people who head them up and keep them organized and focused. We know the Holy Spirit is calling others of you two-by-two to come forward and lead. There is a passage from Jesus, in which he invites us to make a liar out of him: The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few. Let s work together to increase our laborers within our abundant harvest. Brothers and sisters, the Lord be with you. Alleluia, also written Hallelujah, is an expression of joy and praise to God. This Hebrew word untranslated by the early Christians found its way into the liturgy as the chant before the reading of the Gospel. Perhaps because of its association with the Hallel psalms (Psalms ) chanted at Passover, the word is frequently used during the Easter season. When composers set text to music, they can choose either a syllabic or melismatic style. A syllabic setting generally gives only one note for each of the text s syllables. The Alleluia we currently sing at Mass is syllabic. Melismatic settings use multiple notes for each syllable and can become quite lengthy. The extended final syllable of these alleluias is called the jubilus. Because music notation developed much later, singers started adding words to the jubilus in order to remember them. This extra text eventually separated from the alleluia and became a separate piece of music, the sequence. Two remain in use today for Easter (Victimae paschali laudes) and Pentecost (Veni Sancte Spiritus). Most of the sequences were eliminated in the Missal of Pius V in During Lent in the Roman rite, the Alleluia is replaced with another acclamation of praise. Some other Catholic rites such as the Orthodox continue to sing Alleluia during Lent, maintaining a more sober but still joyful attitude to the season. Whether an Alleluia or other acclamation of praise, when the Gospel acclamation is not sung, it may be omitted. Here we have a specific instruction from the Roman Missal that if we aren t going to sing, we might as well not even include this part of the liturgy! God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises. (Sing to the Lord, #1) The Hebrew people sang Alleluia to praise the Lord. Let us raise our voices with that same joy. Alleluia!

This choice usually pertains to a quality of life we are looking to achieve. With that choice comes a community. We live in particular neighborhoods and may grow close to neighbors whose choices and lifestyles can be similar to ours. We often become comfortable in this environment; so comfortable, in fact, that we may become intolerant of those who come from different neighborhoods, lifestyle choices, or cultures. In today s Gospel, the parable of the Good Samaritan challenges us to move beyond the comfort of what is familiar. Jesus tells the parable after reciting the commandment which ends with and love your neighbor as yourself. His telling of the parable is prompted by the scholar who asks and who is my neighbor? What is important to note about the parable is that Samaritans were a despised people by Jesus Jewish community. The fact that a Samaritan should be held up as an example of good behavior would have been more than ironic; it would have been unbelievable, untenable. The point of the parable is one of opening us up to a broader understanding of neighbor. In Colossians, Saint Paul tells us Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth... All people are made in the image of God, and therefore share a kinship. We are called to be open to those people not familiar to us because they are our brothers and sisters. But being open to others is not always easy. Being open to the stranger in our midst can be discomforting because of our differences. But it is exactly this discomfort that we are called to enter into as disciples. We are called to reach out beyond the comforting boundaries of what is familiar to people who are different from us and treat them with a similar kindness and dignity as shown by the Good Samaritan. It is in this way that we show our kinship with God. It is in this way that we spread the good news of God s love by being the embodiment of that love, even to those who are foreign to us. Bishop Madden s monthly prayer walks are beautiful ways to engage with our neighbors in Baltimore. Inquiry sessions take place every Thursday from 7pm to 8:30pm.
