Presently, we are in need of supplies for our food pantry as donations have been depleted over the holidays. We are excited to announce that St. Charles School will be holding a Career Day on Thursday, January 31 at 9am. This Career Day will be specifically for St. Charles students in grades 5-8. The purpose of this event is to expose SCS middle schoolers to various industries and career paths. 3 Baptism of the Lord Month of the Holy Name of Jesus Did you know the sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church (CCC1212) were instituted to impart God s grace upon us as we are formed and lay the foundations of our Christian life? The Catechism CCC 1212 tells us: The sacraments of Christian initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist - lay the foundations of every Christian life. "The sharing in the divine nature given to men through the grace of Christ bears a certain likeness to the origin, development, and nourishing of natural life. The faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life. By means of these sacraments of Christian initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity. Sunday February 3 at 9:30am, before the 10:00am Mass we will have a favorite hymn sing in the upper church. There will be a basket at the side door where you may submit your requests ahead of time. Save the dates! St Charles is committed to aiding our parishioners in their journey in becoming intentional disciples and in serving and growing the Church through accepting the mission and getting involved. There is no better way of doing this than offering solid catholic formation and opportunities for people to gather and share their parish and faith. Faith formation for adults will be offered throughout the year for our 3 language communities. As we further develop into the collaborative we are called to be, more opportunities will arise. 5 World Youth Day 2019 happens with Pope Francis in Panama from January 15-30, Because so many cannot travel to Panama, the experience is made more locally at Panama in The Capital. On January 26 in Washington DC so many local youth will gather and take part in this conference to experience the life and love of World Youth Day. Visit wyddc.org for more details. Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan God appeared in three persons. The baptism of John was a sort of sacramental preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It moved men to sentiments of repentance and induced them to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was recognized "outwardly like unto ourselves", He was absolutely sinless and impeccable. He conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of the world". Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin. Excerpted from Msgr. Rudolph G.
