2 Dear Friends, Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time October 29/30, 2016 Since this Sunday marks my annual Stewardship homily, I begin my weekly letter with a word of THANKS for your financial support of the parish. Every ministry, program, and service we offer at the Cathedral is only possible because of the financial contributions of parishioners. THANK YOU! As I normally do during the annual stewardship appeal, let me share with you the goals that I have set for myself as pastor of the parish. These goals are in no way exhaustive of my ministry but succeeding in achieving them will have significant impact on the wider parish: 1. Financial Stability: Between 2011 and 2014, offertory income declined by nearly $250K! Thanks to your generosity, this trend was reversed last year. Increasing offertory income an additional $100K this year will bring the parish back to the giving levels of FY 2011 and stabilize parish operations and ministries. 2. Brick & Mortar Projects: An aging infrastructure presents us with challenges and opportunities. There are two projects beginning to take shape. I have received permission from Archbishop Lori to begin the process to replace the Cathedral s electrical/lighting system. Antiquated and very expensive to operate, a newer lighting system will permit us to brighten up the Church as well as to highlight its magnificent architectural features. There is also a need to take a look at the physical plant needs of the School of the Cathedral. Of immediate concern is the need to conduct a spatial use analysis of our existing school building and create a new Library Media Center. Shortly, I will ask the Archbishop s permission to begin this process. 3. Pastoral Initiatives: Over the past six months, the Pastoral Council, working in concert with the Parish Staff, has developed three pastoral goals in response to the parish survey taken last April and the follow-up parish town-hall meeting in May. These three pastoral goals will be a primary focus of the council and staff over the next three years: Build a sense of community in the parish through small group opportunities. A major initiative in this area will be re-introduction of the Renew Program Arise in the fall of 2017; Revitalize and grow the Cathedral s liturgical music program. Initiatives in this area include the formation of a music committee to advise the Rector and Director of Music in things music as well as the purchase of new hymnals in 2017; To grow the Cathedral s outreach and ministry to high-school-age parishioners. Currently, our youth minister is involved in several program at the School of the Cathedral which should help foster the development of a high-school-age group. During the current school year, a series of events and opportunities are being planned for the youth of our parish. Remember that Tuesday, November 1 is the Solemnity of All Saints and a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass schedule for the Holy Day will be the regular weekday Mass schedule, with the Monday evening Mass being in observance of All Saints. In our Catholic Faith Tradition, November is the month of ALL SOULS when we remember and pray for all who have died. A Mass will be offered every day in November for. You will find envelopes at the doors of the Church for writing down the names of those faithful departed family and friends you would like remembered in these Masses. On ALL SOULS DAY (November 2), the Mass will honor those who were buried from the Cathedral over the past year. We have invited their surviving family members to attend that we might support them with the prayer of the Church. I am very pleased to announce the inauguration of a new Bereavement Ministry at the Cathedral. This ministry of pastoral outreach and hospitality, is meant to provide liturgical, logistical and spiritual support to families as they plan funerals for a loved one. Specifically, the Bereavement Ministry will: Provide funeral coordination support to families, in coordination with parish office Make contact with families after receiving notice of death or prior to death in conjunction with Parish visitation ministry to home bound and sick parishioners Assist family with funeral planning in coordination with parish office Provide day of funeral liturgical support including greeters, Eucharistic Ministers, etc. Communicate with family post-funeral to assure them of parish support through phone, , and personal note communications Invite family of deceased to annual Day Celebration honoring their loved ones. This ministry officially begins in our parish on All Soul Day. My thanks to Gary & Kathy Getz and Frank & Carolyn Knott for taking on the task of getting this ministry off the ground. Finally, Archbishop Lori will celebrate the 9:30am Mass next Sunday as he closes the Holy Door and officially concludes the Holy Year of Mercy in the Archdiocese. As for the opening of the Holy Year, we invite all young families to join us for this ever special event. Have a Good Week! Msgr. Woy Photos courtesy of Alex Lowitt (top) and John J. Coyle, Jr. (bottom). P.S.: Homecoming 2016 is just two weeks away. See a full schedule of events as well as registration information on the parish website:

As a wealthy tax collector, Zacchaeus is despised by the people and labeled a sinner. Jesus is condemned for reaching out to such a person. Even 2000 years later, our society is quick to judge others. Prejudice is still a problem that has not disappeared. As the crowd did, we often make snap judgments about those around us. We can also be quick to judge ourselves. While it can be helpful to recognize quickly when we have offended someone, we often limit ourselves if we try something new and fail. As children of God, we have all been blessed with many gifts. As children, it took time for us to learn to walk and to talk. Some of our other gifts need time to be nurtured and developed as well. Zacchaeus makes a generous offer: Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor. He recognizes his abundance and freely offers from what he has. It is easy to look at our bank balance and determine our level of prosperity. It is much more difficult to measure the other gifts and talents that we have been given. Perhaps your talents have brought you financial abundance. Is there a way for you to offer not just from your financial abundance but from the talents that led to that wealth? Do you still have hidden talents waiting to be called forth by a visit from Jesus? Treasures can come and go quickly. Talents take time to develop. Musical skills are learned slowly. Many people have let their own or someone else s snap judgment about a skill keep it from developing. Zacchaeus climbed a tree before offering his gifts. He did not care about the judgment of others. Making music only requires opening a hymnal and our mouths. Will you set aside the crowd s expectation to be perfect and offer your gifts in service?

Patrick McCurdy, III Monday, October 31 Tuesday, November 1 Friday, November 4 Joseph Jaxson Fields Lindsay & Chris Vest* Dustin T. Burrill Anthony & Margaret Prince Josephina V. Hollins Norbert P. & Donna M. Lehane & family Wednesday, November 2 John Thomas Morris JoAnn Frances Gray Thursday, November 3 Paul Rubera Marty Barthelme* Saturday, November 5 5:00pm Daniel Beckenholdt Living* At this time of year, it is great to see kids get excited by the seasonal rituals of carving pumpkins, picking out a Halloween costume, and trick-or-treating. It is great to participate in these ritual preparations and, this year, may inject some much needed joy into what has become a joyless election campaign season. Joy is the emotion with which Zacchaeus receives Jesus in the gospel. Zacchaeus, a man described as short in stature, cannot see Jesus as he is passing by. Though he is the chief tax collector, one who oversaw the exploitation of his people for the financial well-being of the Roman Empire and himself, he does not appear to be corrupt in his attitude. Instead, he displays a childlike excitement about Jesus presence, such that he climbs up a tree in order to see him. Jesus meets his enthusiasm with openness and invites himself to dine with Zacchaeus. And so, Zacchaeus receives him with joy. We can only speculate about his life, his profession, and what enabled that joy. But scripture points us to Zacchaeus journey. He was seeking to see who Jesus was. Why would he go to so much bother to climb a tree to see Jesus? Clearly, he has heard of him and the deeds he had done. Zacchaeus was moved by Jesus reputation, moved so much that he wanted to see him, moved so much by his encounter with Jesus that he desires to reconcile his life by giving to the poor. There is an openness and lightness of spirit about Zacchaeus, buoyancy and goodness that Jesus calls forward. This is the attitude of our God, who has mercy on all. And love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made (Wisdom 11: 24). The Gospel highlights this divine attitude. Our God is a God who wishes to be in relationship with us, if we would only seek him as Zacchaeus does. Ours is a journey to God who, in his vastness, loves every one of us individually, despite our shortness of stature (read: sinfulness). For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost. That is not only good news, it is what Pope Francis would call the Joy of the Gospel. Can we meet that divine joy with our own childlike joy?
