2 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 17/18, 2016 Dear Friends, On Saturday evening, we hold our 4th Annual Haiti Carnavale in support of our sister parish of St. Charles Cathedral in Gonaives, Haiti. It s always a great night of family fun for a very worthy cause. Kudos to Donna McCann and her team for the tremendous amount of work and energy they expend to make the Carnavale the great event that it is. If you cannot attend, you can still support the cause by making a donation to the Poor Box this weekend. This Sunday is also Catechetical Sunday when those who pass on the Catholic faith tradition are recognized and commissioned for their important ministry. Catechists are not just those who formally teach religion in our parish elementary school or the Sunday School of Religion, but also RCIA team members, Bible Study leaders, sponsor couples for marriage prep, Confirmation teachers, in fact anyone who shares in the ministry of God s word. My deepest thanks go to all of our catechists who bring to life our ever expanding opportunities to grow in knowledge of the Lord Jesus. If you missed the Catholic Charities Dragon Boat Races last Saturday, you missed quite the event. What a wonderful showing by Team Cathedral. We won the Rookie Race and competitively placed in two other races against more experienced teams. Most importantly, it was a great parish effort (Church & School) which benefited our Catholic Charities partner Gallagher Services. Through your generosity, our Dragon Boast Team raised over $8,000 for Gallagher Services. There are so many people I need to thank for making our inaugural Dragon Boat effort such a huge success. Thanks to the hundred plus parishioners who posted on a very hot (94 degrees) and sun-drenched Inner Harbor to cheer on our team; Thanks to Bill & Mary McFaul for hosting a Happy Hour at their Ropewalk Tavern in Federal Hill on Thursday. If you weren t there, the turnout was great a family affair with close to 250 attendees; Thanks to Lisa Hobbs and Target Marketing Group for producing our t-shirts; Thanks to our Dragon Boat Team who not only paddled three races last Saturday but spent several Saturdays practicing in preparation: Jen Speargas (Drummer); Amanda Mainello (Steerer); Beth Awalt, Katie Pinheiro, Ginna Kelly & Fr. Andrew (Captains); Paddlers Siobhan Cooney, Ryan Kelly, Cathy & Paul Lobo, Keith & Lauren McQuaid, Jared Alexander, Paul Speargas, Anthony Zehyoue, Jason Taylor, Matt Werden, Mike McQuestion, Morgan Granger, Luke Land, Megan Kunkel, Lauren Jackson, Dewey Senft, and Josh Ward; Thanks to the Spirit Committee of Jen Speargas, Ginna Kelly, Katie Pinheiro, Bernadette Streett, Kate Taylor and Annie Werden; Thanks to Chris McCullough who fostered the project from its inception at CMOQ, and to Beth Awalt, who tended to a lot of the last-minute details in the final weeks before the race. It was a great team-family effort! I can just see the Dragon Boat Championship Trophy in our lobby in 2018! Next Sunday, Archbishop Lori will be at the Cathedral for the 6th Annual Filipino Festival honoring San Lorenzo Ruiz and San Pedro Calungsod. The celebration begins with Mass at 2:00 PM followed by a festival on the Cathedral grounds afterwards. This annual celebration fills the house and it is a pleasure to welcome the Filipino Community and their chaplain, Fr. Pete Literal, to the Cathedral. Have a Good Week! Msgr. Woy

3 Last week Offertory Collection $9, Faith Direct $14, Poor Box $ Food Program $47.00 Pres. Trust $ The poor box this week will benefit our sister parish in Haiti. Thank you to everyone who recently supported Cathedral s Dragon Boat team, raising approximately $8,000 for Gallagher Services (a program of Catholic Charities). It was wonderful to see so many parishioners in attendance at Ropewalk Tavern last week, at the Inner Harbor on Race Day, and sporting the Cathedral Dragon Boat t-shirts throughout the week. Our team earned the title Rookies of the Year, and we are excited to return even stronger for the next Dragon Boat Races in two years! Faith Direct Faith Direct is a convenient way to support Cathedral of Mary Our Queen using direct debit for your offertory giving. Register: CMOQ Code: MD500 Thank you to our parishioners who already use Faith Direct! Many kids are afraid of the dark. When we hear a strange clunk or crash in the night, even as adults our instinct is to turn on the light. We might first jump, scream, or hide, but when we are ready to investigate, we need the light. In the time of Jesus, light came from the sun, moon and stars, or a flame. While only one person owns a book or piece of clothing, light is shared. Once a candle is lit, the light no longer belongs just to the candle owner. Everyone present receives some benefit. This flame can also be passed to other candles with no loss of light from the original. In John 12:46, Jesus says, I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness. Jesus then provides that first light for our darkness. His light is also the spark for our own lights. One candle can only spread light so far, but when the flame is passed to other candles, the light can reach much further. Christ is our light that we then spread through the world. Our opening hymn for this weekend is Christ, Be Our Light by Bernadette Farrell. Bernadette was born in Yorkshire, England, and has a passion for social justice. She was part of the St. Thomas More Group in the 1970 s with other liturgical composers including Stephen Dean, Paul Inwood, Peter Jones, Anne Quigley, and Christopher Walker. Other songs by her include Unless a Grain of Wheat and O God, You Search Me. Currently, she lives in London and is a community organizer for UK Citizens, which advocates for fair housing, a living wage, and health care access. Christ, Be Our Light calls us to serve and identifies other needs beyond light that we can provide: shelter, food, warmth, and clothing. One way to shine is to sing. Let Christ be your light and shine through you as you sing this weekend!

Macsherry, Jr. Hugh O Brian Marty Barthelme* For the Sick Saturday, September 24 5:00pm Nick Mirabile For the Parish Living* Serving the poor is an issue that our City Council has considered in their deliberations for Port Covington. There is some contention over whether the plan will create another exclusive community, or address the issues of the poor in terms of affordable housing, job training, and job creation. What is clear is the need to do something to help the working poor. Care for the poor is a constitutive part of Catholic Social Teaching (CST). CST flows from scripture, whose intent is captured in today s psalm refrain; Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor. Care for the poor is one of the hallmarks of Jesus ministry. Jesus reached out to those on the margins of his society to affirm their dignity and show God s love for them. For us, caring for those struggling with poverty is something that takes a consciousness in how we live our lives. If we wish to serve God, we must put ourselves at the service of those in need. Amos gives this admonishment to those who do not. Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land! We might say, I don t trample upon the needy or destroy the poor, but today s Gospel challenges us to examine how we live our lives. No servant can serve two masters... You cannot serve both God and mammon. Do we worship at the altar of wealth? Do we care for the less fortunate with what we have? One way to gain insight into whom we are serving is by examining how we participate in the marketplace. Do our purchases help or harm the dignity of those who are providing those services or goods? Are our purchases supporting living wages, or do they support a system of profit at the expense of workers? The fair trade movement is one example of a way to support the dignity of workers. The Port Covington project is an opportunity for Baltimore to do something for those struggling with poverty. The more aware we are, the more we can amend our actions to support the poor and needy. How do we use what we have to lift up the poor? What do we give and what do we hold back? In praying over these questions, we can examine our lives with an eye to serving God instead of mammon. We wish to congratulate and welcome James Henry Fenhagen, Layla Burke Molloy, and Henry Samuel Pilkerton on celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism. The next Baptism prep class will be held October 2 at 12:30pm in the Cathedral baptistery.
