2 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 15/16, 2016 Dear Friends, Msgr. Woy asked me to use his weekly message to update you on our efforts toward enhancing the efficiency of our building systems while moving toward consuming cleaner energy. If you spend much time in the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, at some point you have likely said to yourself, It must cost a fortune to heat this place. Our cathedral was certainly built during a time when energy of all forms was plentiful and cheap. To give you a sense of proportionality, our mechanical plant (the garage building located at the rear of the parking lot) processes so much electric power that BGE considers it a privately owned electricity sub-station. With that designation comes a range of maintenance requirements such as routine x-rays of the switching equipment. Why do we need so much power? Well, each of our 26 large chandeliers in the main nave draws 3,500 watts of electricity when fully illuminated. That does not even take into account the electricity demand of the other lighting, air conditioning, or general electrical needs of the cathedral, the school, or the parish center. Additionally, our boilers consume nearly 50,000 gallons of heating oil during an average year. With the maturing of our buildings, much of the mechanical infrastructure has aged to the end of its normal life expectancy. For example, the chandeliers, wiring, and light-dimming equipment in the church have reached the end of their expected life. Frankly, we struggle to locate domestic sources for the 1,000 watt chandelier bulbs as the incandescent version is being phased out. Similarly, the three commercial boilers in the plant building, at 28 years, have reached the end of their life expectancy. These challenges provide us with tremendous opportunities to not just replace our equipment with more efficient versions of the existing equipment, but to look to new technologies on both the energy consumption end and, just as important, upstream in the types of energy we consume and how it is produced. So, I want to take what is left of the allotted space to inform you of our efforts in this area. We are in the final stage of a summer-long project to replace all three boilers along with the piping, valves, etc that comprise our centralized heating system. Of course, the new boilers are much more efficient than the three being removed. Looking beyond simply replacing the boilers, we are building flexibility in the types of fuel we consume. The old boilers consumed fuel oil only while the new boilers have dual source burners. The new burners use less expensive natural gas while preserving our ability to simply switch over to oil if needed; therefore, the new boilers will use less fuel and will burn less expensive fuel. Working with a subcommittee of our facility commission, we have selected an architect/lighting designer team to lead an assessment of the lighting system. Our plan is to assess the condition of the wiring and dimming system with an expectation of replacing the mechanical dimmers with a more modern electronic system as well as substantial sections of wiring. Furthermore, we will evaluate how to rewire the existing chandeliers with the intention of drawing less power while possibly generating more light. Finally, we will assess the interior architecture with an eye toward using modern lighting design and technology to better enhance the architecture and to provide lighting scene settings that enhance the mood of the church to suit the occasion. While an upgrade of the lighting system may result in a decrease in electricity consumed, we have also addressed how the electricity we consume is generated. As part of an agreement between Constellation Energy, the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, effective this past April, all of the electricity consumed on our campus is generated via a solar array located just north of town. Assuming the current rate of usage, this 20-year agreement should generate annual savings of approximately one-third and will move us forward in a profound way toward being better stewards of the non-renewable resource that is our planet. Yours in Christ, Clarence Bryant Director of Management Services Photos courtesy of Alex Lowitt (top) and John J. Coyle, Jr. (bottom).

Registration for weekend events includes: Kids Night Out, the Middle School Mixer, the High School Movie Night, and the Bull & Oyster Roast. For information about sponsorships, please contact Elizabeth Stoops at estoops@cmoq.org or My best guess is that even most children know hundreds of songs. Back before Pandora and Spotify, we could guesstimate how many songs we might know by how many CDs (cassettes, or even LPs) we had. When the ipod came out, itunes kept track of how many songs were in your library. Now, even Apple doesn t bother to count for you. We all have a very large repertoire of songs that we know. For some songs, we know all the words and can start singing at a moment s notice. Others we might need to sing along with someone else or a recording to remember the words. Finally, for some, we might recognize the song, thoroughly enjoy it, but never have learned the words (if it had words). Songs can be familiar because we hear them every day, every week, or every season. They can also be familiar because we sang them during a certain period of our lives. Unless you have a small child now, my guess is it s been a while since you sang Row, Row, Row Your Boat. I m also guessing that you started thinking of the tune as soon as you read the words. No matter how long it s been since you sang or heard that song, it s still a familiar one. Whether we can sing all the words or simply recognize the tune, familiar songs become part of who we are. They enable us and help us to share our emotions. Are we feeling down? Play some slower sad songs. Ready to get going again? Find some happier and faster songs to sing. As people of prayer, there should be music that we know to help us pray. These songs can provide words for our concerns and anguish as well as our joys and thanksgivings. While you may not hear the songs we sing at the Cathedral on the radio, my hope is that you will sing and hear them often enough that they become not just a part of your musical repertoire but part of your faith.

In the first reading, it appears that God is condoning war and the slaughter of Amalek s army. In the Gospel, it appears that God is being likened to an unjust judge. What sense can we make out of these readings? A key for interpreting scripture is looking at it allegorically. In doing this, we may find meaning for our spiritual lives. Growing weary is a theme expressed in both readings. Moses arms grow weary from holding them up in prayer to ensure victory for Joshua and his army. The unjust judge grows weary of the widow s requests and grants her what she wants as a result of her steadfast persistence. Weariness is something we all encounter on our spiritual journey from time to time. We are called by the readings today to be steadfast in the face of that weariness. The widow has no one to advocate for her in a man s world and yet she is steadfast in her request. That is what wins over the unjust judge to do the right thing for her. We, too, must be steadfast in our requests to God. But, sometimes we are too weary. Sometimes we need someone to come and put a rock under us and support us on either side to steady our hands in our own spiritual battles. That is what Aaron and Hur provide for Moses. That is what the community of believers can provide for us. We are given each other to help one another in our spiritual journeys. We are all members of the Body of Christ. We are individual disciples drawn together as one community in the Eucharist. Being connected to God s steadfast love through this spiritual food fills us with grace and love that we can share with others. The grace of that divine love enables us to reach out to others who are weary, which in turn builds up that community of the Body of Christ. We, too, can ask for that same help of the community when we are weary. Being steadfast in our relationship with God is both an individual task and a communal one. May we have the courage of conviction to give and receive the gift of the grace of love that flows from the sacrament of God s (steadfast) love. We wish to congratulate and welcome Blake Alexander Cummings, Hunter James Somerville, and Jack Henry Sutter on celebrating the sacrament of baptism. The next Baptism prep class will be November 6 at 12:30pm in the Cathedral baptistery.
