1 Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life? Your heavenly father knows what you need Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all things will be given to you besides. MATTHEW 6:24-25 WINDOWS LOCATED IN NORTH BAY Mass Times Weekdays Saturday Confessions 4:00pm 5:00pm Sunday 8:00am 9:30am 11:00am Clergy Most Rev. William E. Lori Archbishop of Baltimore Msgr. 2 Dear Friends, 8 th Sunday in Ordinary Time; February 25 / 26, 2017 While Msgr. Woy is away this week, he asked me to provide you with a mid-year financial report. Due to space limitations I have included a highly summarized income statement with this report. Please visit our website for a more detailed version. The Cathedral income statement is divided into two sections: Income and expense from operations and other income and expense. Income and expense from operations includes your weekly and seasonal offering, general gifts, and your charitable giving netted against the direct expenses of providing ministry and running the parish. The other income and expense section at the bottom of the income statement includes income from campaigns such as the Archbishop s Annual Appeal, interest and earnings from the Trust as well as expenses associated with servicing our loan and large capital facilities projects. This report will focus on operating income and expenses. For the first half of the fiscal year we have an operating loss of $83k. The good news is that our loss is $203k better than we budgeted but still $23k more than we lost this time last year. We budgeted lower net operating income, actually a loss, this year because although we expected a modest increase in offertory we also expected overall income to be lower because last year s income included a sizeable bequest from a will. When we combine lower income with additional ministry costs and the typical operating expense increases, the result is lower net operating income. However, Income from nearly all sources has surpassed both budgeted and prior year levels. The only exception is that income from the homecoming weekend missed budget. At $41k ahead of budget and $66k above prior year, offertory accounts for the largest area of income growth. When combined with increases from the past two years, offertory giving levels will soon be restored to 2011 levels. Giving through electronic funds transfer (EFT) has become the preferred vehicle for new parishioners. EFT will soon overtake envelope giving levels as new parishioners overwhelmingly select this method and existing families continue migrating from envelopes. Expenses have increased by $112k from last year but remain $133k below the current budget. Expense increases are primarily due to rebuilding our ministries. You may recall Msgr. Woy asked for your support during the past two years Archbishop s Annual Appeal to Cathedral of Mary Our Queen enable hiring staff and supporting ministry costs. You Statement of Income and Expenses: Mid-Year Report will find that income line item near the bottom of the Mid-Year (July - Dec 2016) statement. While costs in general seem to always Budget Prior YTD Current vs increase, we have had success managing expense Actual Budget Variance Actual Prior Yr growth below our budget. Further, we are excited to see how our new solar array and natural gas boilers will positively impact facilities operating expenses. Thus far, the boilers appear to use half the energy of the old system. The General gifts/donations income category represents gifts from bequests, matching contributions from employers and gifts from people not registered with the Cathedral. We budget this income conservatively because of the uncertainty around it. We are grateful for the generous gifts we have received this year. These gifts have been put to work on projects such as enhancements to our sound system. Gifts/ donations have surpassed budget by $34k and are $19k ahead of last year. The homecoming weekend was conceived through members of the Cathedral community expressing to Msgr. Woy their desire for a signature social event to build a sense of community. Although we would love to operate the homecoming weekend at break even, it is not a fundraiser. We will continue seeking sponsorships next year to help cover its cost but in the end the social benefits outweigh the cost. Net of sponsorships and other income the homecoming weekend costs $17k. Although it seems counter intuitive to state the Cathedral is financially healthy when we are on pace to lose $200k this year, the fact is we are headed in the right direction. Attendance at weekly Mass and parish registrations are both increasing. Enthusiastic participation in parish ministries and events are also on the rise. Families are financially investing in the parish through sacrificial giving and by supporting specific appeals that enhance ministry. These are all signs of a vibrant parish that is moving in the right direction. We will provide updates on our budget at least quarterly through the year from this point forward. Have a great week!! Register: CMOQ Code: MD500 Thank you to our parishioners who already use Faith Direct! Thank you to all who have participated in the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen s 2017 Archbishop s Annual Appeal. When you give to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal, you support archdiocesan ministries that directly impact our parish s administration and evangelization efforts. Additionally through the generosity of Catholics like you, the Archbishop s Annual Appeal strengthens the ministries that serve our Archdiocese. Please take a moment to reflect upon how the Lord is calling you to support the mission and ministries of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. To make a pledge to our parish Archbishop Annual Appeal, please visit or complete a pledge form available on the tables near the doors in Church. Thank you for your prayers and support. FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS: The Cathedral of Mary Our Queen and the Archdiocese of Baltimore have a commitment to maintaining the trust of the faithful by providing our children and youth with safe environments characterized by healthy relationships. All parishes and Archdiocesan schools use Shield the Vulnerable for any volunteer/employee who works with minors to facilitate compliance with archdiocesan child protection requirements. Please visit our website ( for details and instructions for compliance. Where do we find the music we sing? Technology offers us many ways to access music. If you visit different churches, not only will you likely find different songs, you will find different ways that the music is presented. Especially where I was in Florida, screens spaced throughout the church were being installed almost any time a church was renovated. Some places print worship aids as we do here, while others rely solely on hymnals or seasonal books placed in the pews. Why should we choose one option over the other? Physical books have been used for worship for many years. They provide a durable, stable repertoire that we can use over and over again. One of their primary advantages is that once they are paid for, they will last for many years. They are also always at the ready for any last-minute events such as funerals. The disadvantage is that they do not offer any opportunity for new repertoire. Both screens and leaflets offer the option to choose repertoire from anywhere, including the most recent contemporary music. While the freedom of choice is their advantage, their disadvantage becomes maintaining the reprint licenses and creating the leaflet or slides. Slides require technical operators to run. Leaflets use up paper every week. Both require production time and may not be available on short notice. Also, what does it say about our care of the environment or even our faith if we simply throw the music leaflet away every week? How do we share music with one another when it is only available when printed or displayed? I have worked with many different parishes and have used all three options for music distribution. I love the freedom to choose music from anywhere offered by our current music leaflet. I also love knowing we have a hymnal in the pew for a core repertoire and use at any unexpected events. My hope is that our new hymnal will provide a mix of repertoire that we already know and give us a serving of new music to help us grow. Thank you for your support of the new hymnals through your contributions to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal.

Harrison, III Blanche Stallings For the parish Living* Worry. It seems to be a constitutive part of human life. It can be oppressive and intense at times, depending on our life situation. A single mother barely getting by can feel an ever-present worry about how to provide for her family. Our culture, obsessed with appearances, can cause worry in the average person about how he or she measures up to the ideal. These worries can cause stress, cause harm to our relationships, and cause us to lose our sense of worth. Today s readings encourage us not to worry. Jesus says, Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life (Mt. 6: 25). Rather than creating a portrait of carefree living, he intends to focus our care and concern our worry in the right place. Jesus instructs us to seek first the K i n g d o m o f G o d a n d h i s righteousness (Mt. 6: 33). If we focus our energy and concern on the Kingdom of God, all these things will be given to us: food, clothing, shelter, the basics of life. The Kingdom of God needs to be our priority, our focus. But what is the Kingdom of God? Jesus uses his parables to illustrate the Kingdom of God for us. In them, we see it is already here on earth, but not yet fully here. In short, the Kingdom of God exists anytime God s peace and justice are established. If we look at Matthew, chapter twentyfive, we find an instruction manual for establishing the Kingdom of God: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, welcoming the stranger, etc. These actions have a communal implication, such that that single mother who is worried about how to provide for her family should have adequate support from the community with her needs. As disciples, we are called to tend to her worry. Lest we get worried about running out of what we need, or worse, hoard what we have, we are given an indication of God s care for us and our worth. Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you (Is 49: 15). Our God loves us deeply and intimately. God calls us to share that love in a way that establishes peace and roots without worry. How might we be called to calm the fears and worries of another in our lives? Our next Baptism Prep Class will be held Sunday, March 5, at 12:30pm in the Parish Center. For more information, contact: Lori Ryan lryan@cmoq.org If you will be celebrating a wedding anniversary during the month of March, please join Msgr. Woy and Fr.
