3 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 22, 2004 A priest who was traveling to preach a retreat stopped for some food and gas. Two men who were hanging around struck up a conversation with him and began quoting passages from the Bible and mimicking a preacher. Trying to get a rise out of the priest, they teased him. "See, we can preach, too! It isn't that hard!" The priest replied, "Sure, it isn't difficult. Anyone can make a living preaching. Here's the tough part: Try living what you preach!" Anyone can learn a catechism or memorize the responses to Confirmation questions with a little time and patience. But there is a big difference between knowledge and practice. We do not have to make a commitment to things we learn, but in order to put them into practice we do. The Letter to the Hebrews and Jesus himself reminds us that we need discipline, perseverance, and determination. We have to choose to live our life according to the values and things we believe in. It is one thing to preach that God is most important in our life. It is quite another to live by that, choosing God and God's way over everything else. Failing to live our faith is only hypocritical when we really do not have any intention of living our faith. If we just go through the motions to please someone else, we don't really mean it. But if we try and fail, we need to try again, to keep at it until we are successful. In all our attempts to accomplish what is good, God will help us. His grace and his mercy will be our success! P lease pray for the sick of our parish... 5 The Pastor s Page August 22, 2004 FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP The Catholic community is a diverse community of faith, not an interest group. Our Church does not offer contributions or endorsements. Instead, we raise a series of questions, seeking to help lift up the moral and human dimensions of the choices facing voters and candidates: 1. After September 11, how can we build not only a safer world, but a better world? more just, more secure, more peaceful, more respectful of human life and dignity? 2. How will we protect the weakest in our midst--innocent unborn children? How will our nation resist what Pope John Paul II calls a "culture of death"? How can we keep our nation from turning to violence to solve some of its most difficult problems--abortion to deal with difficult pregnancies; the death penalty to combat crime; euthanasia and assisted suicide to deal with the burdens of age, illness, and disability; and war to address international disputes? 3. How will we address the tragic fact that more than 30,000 children die every day as a result of hunger, international debt, and lack of development around the world, as well as the fact that the younger you are, the more likely you are to be poor here in the richest nation on Earth? 4. How can our nation help parents raise their children with respect for life, sound moral values, a sense of hope, and an ethic of stewardship and responsibility? How can our society defend the central institution of marriage and better support families in their moral roles and responsibilities, offering them real choices and financial resources to obtain quality education and decent housing? 5. How will we address the growing number of families and individuals without affordable and accessible health care? How can health care better protect human life and respect human dignity? 6. How will our society combat continuing prejudice, overcome hostility toward immigrants and refugees, and heal the wounds of racism, religious bigotry, and other forms of discrimination? 7. How will our nation pursue the values of justice and peace in a world where injustice is common, desperate poverty widespread, and peace is too often overwhelmed by violence? 8. What are the responsibilities and limitations of families, community organizations, markets, and government? How can these elements of society work together to overcome poverty, pursue the common good, care for creation, and overcome injustice? 9. When should our nation use, or avoid the use of, military force--for what purpose, under what authority, and at what human cost? 10. How can we join with other nations to lead the world to greater respect for human life and dignity, religious freedom and democracy, economic justice, and care for God's creation? We hope these questions and the 2004 campaigns can lead to less cynicism and more participation, less partisanship, and more civil dialogue on fundamental issues. --Taken from the Statement "The Challenge of Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call To Political Responsibility" by the Administrative Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Page 5 Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for a number of years now. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: August 23: Rev. Alfred J. Junk (1957) Rev. Anthony D. Ficko (2000) August 24: Rev. George Angemaier (1948) Msgr. Michael Shea (1956) This dual calling of faith and citizenship is at the heart of what it means to be a Catholic in the United States. Faithful Citizenship calls us to seek a place at the table of life for all God s children in the elections of 2004 and beyond. USCCB Administrative Committee Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsibility, p ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A woman was at home with her children when the telephone rang. In going to answer it, she tripped on a rug, grabbed for something to hold on to and seized the telephone table. It fell over with a crash, jarring the receiver off the hook. As it fell, it hit the family dog, which leaped up, howling and barking. The woman's three-year-old son, startled by this noise, broke into loud screams. The woman mumbled some colorful words. She finally managed to pick up the receiver and lift it to her ear, just in time to hear her husband's voice on the other end say, "Nobody's said hello yet, but I'm positive I have the right number."

Listen to Catholic radio programming on station 1270 AM, WWCA available practically all day Monday to Friday. You might even become addicted! Anti-Racism Initiative Listening Sessions Munster, Indiana As our Anti-Racism Initiative enters its third year the story of Thomas the Doubter comes to mind. For many of us over the past two and one-half years we have often been like Thomas we will not believe it. We cannot believe that those who are different from us could suffer discrimination. Racism may exist, but not here in our parish. Lets take another look at the story of Thomas. Thomas continued to doubt and insisted that he would not believe unless he touched the wounds of Jesus. Jesus reappears, and he does not upbraid Thomas, but rather invites Thomas to touch his wounds, and as he touches the wounds his doubts fall away - his belief and faith is restored. At the listening sessions we will hear stories of hurt, alienation and exclusion. Just as Jesus invited Thomas, He now invites us not to dismiss these stories, but to touch the wounds of the speakers and to believe. In our own lives, and in our parishes, it is important to bear in mind that by walking with those who have been hurt and wounded, we come to know their stories so well that we become freed from our own perspective, and are able to enter into their world as fully as possible. Plan now to join Bishop Melczek and his priests at the listening sessions. Invite your friends and fellow parishioners to join you also. You are encouraged to attend the sessions nearest your parish, and the other sessions. The stories will be different at each session. (Adapted from Reconciliation: A Ministry by R. Schreiter-C.PP.S) The Listening Session Dates: Wednesday, September 8 ~ 7:00 p.m. St. Mary Parish, East Chicago Sunday, September 12 ~ 2:00 p.m. Marquette High School, Michigan City Thursday, September 16 ~ 7;00 p.m. Our Lady of Consolataion, Merrillville Sunday, September 19 ~ 2:00 p.m. SS.
