5 The Pastor s Page December 5, 2004 ADVENT WITH MARY You Are Invited... Suppose the script for our salvation had been written in Hollywood rather than in heaven. The scriptwriters probably would have had the Son of God arriving as a full-grown man, riding on the clouds of heaven, with angelic trumpets blasting. That wasn't God's plan. Our Savior decided to come as a tiny embryo in a womb, to spend nine months developing as a baby, and then to be born as each of us was. Because of that decision, God needed a mother. Who was this extraordinary woman? Mary's story begins with the Annunciation scene in Luke's first chapter. "In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary." (Luke 1:26-27). God's messenger presented Mary with the most amazing invitation: He asked her if she would become the Mother of God. Saint Bernard pictures this moment when all creation held its breath: "O Virgin, the angel awaits an answer. Answer with a word, receive the Word of God. Open your heart to faith, O blessed Virgin, and your womb to the Creator. See, the desired of nations is at your door. Arise, hasten, open." We know Mary's answer: "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word" (Luke 1:38). Her consent was based on God's gift of grace to her, as is the consent of all who accept the gospel. But Luke makes it clear that this free acceptance of God's invitation was necessary if the divine plan was to go ahead. The same is true for us: God's plan for our salvation does not move ahead without our free consent. Of course, this cannot happen without an abundance of grace, yet our consent is a fundamental element of God's plan. We are constantly being invited to become more and more the people of God. May we answer as freely, graciously, and wholeheartedly as Mary did: "Let it be with me according to your word." -- Father Patrick Kaler, C.SS.R. 1995, Liguori Publications / Used with permission Congratulations to the parishioner members of the Knights of Columbus who made their 4th Degree in South Bend last month: Dave Blocker, Jeff Chastain, Tony Popiela, Deacon Napoleon Tabion, Kent Toney, Dave Trotman and Stan Slaczyk. Congratulations, Sir Knights! Advent Wreath: Light the first and second candles of the wreath. Sing together: O Come, O Come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel. That mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appears. Rejoice. Rejoice. Emanuel shall come to you, O Israel. Page 5 SPECIAL THANK-YOU S Last Sunday s bulletin was sent to the printers before the weekend of November 20/21 because of the Thanksgiving Holiday. Therefore, I did not have a chance to do a couple of thank you s because the events had not yet happened. Now, however, I can say thanks for the following: Ministry Fair: Thank you so much to all the many groups in our parish who volunteer their time to minister to their fellow brothers and sisters in faith. I was very impressed with the hard work that went into our Ministries Fair. The set up alone was really wonderfully done. Many people came up to me that Saturday and Sunday telling me what an impression our groups made upon them. I know many a ministry that now has new volunteers as well. Thanks to all who made the weekend such a success, to all of you who volunteer to minister in and around our parish, and to all of you who have just volunteered. Someone will call you shortly. Forty Hours: Every parish used to hold this beautiful Eucharistic devotion. Nowadays, it is harder to find the parish that hosts Forty Hours. Especially in this Year of the Eucharist, as proclaimed by Pope John Paul II, we were really blessed to be able to spend time with our Eucharistic Lord. Thanks to all who set up, who acted as servers, who sang or who, in any other way, provided help during our Forty Hours. Thanks, also, to Fr. Bill O Toole for his very inspirational talks all three evenings. It was good to have him back with us! ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Signs You Bought a Lousy Tree - No offense, Knights! It is two feet tall, forty feet wide. Salesman's opening line: "You're not a cop, are you?" It looks suspiciously like a broom handle with a lot of coat hangers. Each branch has "Duraflame" printed on it. It's very small and says "air freshener" on it. TV producer buys it for the remake of A Charlie Brown Christmas.

The Meaning of Advent Munster, Indiana If you want God, and long for union with him, yet sometimes wonder what that means or whether it can mean anything at all, you are already walking with the God who comes. If you are at times so weary and involved with the struggle of living that you have no strength even to want him, yet are still dissatisfied that you don t, you are already keeping Advent in your life. If you have ever had an obscure intuition that the truth of things is somehow better, greater, more wonderful than you deserve or desire, that the touch of God in your life stills you by its gentleness, that there is a mercy beyond anything you could ever suspect, you are already drawn into the central mystery of salvation. Maria Boulding, The Coming of God, Third edition (Conception, Missouri: The Printery House, 2000), p. l. Spirituality and Worship Commission invites our faith community to attend Advent Evening Prayer services the remaining Sundays of Advent (Dec. 5, Dec. 12 and Dec. 19) at 6:00 p.m. This beautiful prayer is recited all over the world and our voices would join in praise to God.
