4 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the old Walt Kelly comic strip "Pogo" every time things would get to be too much for the main characters you could bet on seeing the "Gone fishin'" sign posted on a nearby tree. It was a literary device that Kelly used, to bring a break to the previous action and change the story line. In a way, Luke does the same thing in Sunday's Gospel. After the press of the crowds, Jesus convinces Simon to let him teach from the boat. Then he tells him to head out into deep water to fish. We've changed the subject from Jesus healing and preaching. Suddenly, we've "Gone fishin'," and while initially that's what is literally happening, it doesn't stay that way for long. It's a setup for the greater point of the story: "From now on you will be catching men." It's not just Simon and the sons of Zebedee that get led into this convenient little scenario. Gospels are not just quaint stories. They are good news for us as well. Jesus gets into life with us, much like he got into Simon's boat. He tells us to go out a little farther, that is, to stretch our faith a little more. And even when we want to give up ("we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing") he tells us to cast into the deep. Trusting in him, we find that wondrous things happen as we witness to the meaning of Jesus in our lives. In the end, the example of our faith is to lead others to Jesus. That's where instead of fish, we'll be catching men and women. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if we hung a little "Gone fishin'" sign somewhere where we would see it every day, as long as we remember that our faith is the net, and from now on we're out there fishing to bring others to Christ. P lease pray for the sick of our parish... 5 The Pastor s Page FEAR, FEAR, AND MORE FEAR Can anyone tell me just what it is with human beings that we appear to live in fear so often throughout our lives? We are afraid of getting sick, of getting lost, of losing family and friends, of failure, of death, of life, of, well, you get the idea! This weekend s readings address this whole topic of fear as well. In the first reading, Isaiah blurts out, Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts! This was after Isaiah had a vision of the Lord. One of the Seraphim flew to Isaiah with a burning ember, touched his lips, and told him that his sin had been purged. Immediately afterwards, Isaiah heard the Lord say, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Isaiah s response? Here I am. Send me. Again, in the Gospel, Peter met the Lord in a display of power. Peter s response was to exclaim, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Jesus told Simon, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men. Peter s response? He left family and business behind and followed the Lord. Fear is a terrible thing and has awful consequences. Living in constant fear, people can develop ulcers, high blood pressure, heart conditions. Their personalities change, usually for the worse. They become suspicious, timid, excitable. We would do anything to escape fear. There is one who can release us from fear: Jesus Christ. As He releases us from the bondage of fear, He asks us to follow Him in a new direction in life. If our response is like Isaiah s Here I am. Send me. or like Peter s response of leaving all behind to follow Christ, we can rest assured that He will take care of us. The going may not be easy. We may still face difficulties in our lives. We may still be in danger. We may still find ourselves in peril. However, the danger, peril, and/or difficulties will be easier to face because God will set us free from the fear that often accompanies those circumstances. Tired of living in fear? Give yourself over to the Lord today! LENT IS FAST APPROACHING The renewing season of Lent will be upon us soon so I thought it might be a good idea to run some dates by you: February 17: Ash Wednesday. Masses will be 6:30 and 9:00 a.m. as well as 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. This is not a Holy Day of Obligation yet many people choose to begin their Lenten Season with this Mass. February 20: First Confessions. Please keep the children of our parish in your prayers as they prepare for this sacrament. March 14-16: Parish Mission. Fr. Marty Dobrzynski, Pastor of St. Michael Church in Schererville and Director of the Office of Liturgy for the Diocese of Gary, will present a mission based upon how we worship and will speak about the upcoming changes to the Mass which will take place next year. March 29: Communal Penance Service. Confessions will be heard at 7:00 p.m. this evening. Wednesday: Lenten Mass. Each Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m., there will be a special Lenten Mass offered. Friday: Stations of the Cross. Each Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. the Stations of the Cross will be led by our parish deacons. This beautiful devotion truly helps us focus on the meaning of Lent. Used properly, the season of Lent can help us to prepare for a more meaningful and prayerful experience of the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus at Easter. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A young priest was contacted by the local funeral director to hold a grave side committal service at a small local cemetery for someone with no family or friends. The priest started early but quickly got himself lost, making several wrong turns. He arrived a half-hour late, the hearse was nowhere in site, and the workmen were eating lunch. The priest went to the open grave and found the vault lid already in place. Taking out his book, he read the service. As he was returning to his car, he overheard one of the workmen say: "You think we ought to tell him that's a septic tank?" Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: February 8: Msgr. Frederick J. Westendorf (1963) Rev. Robert E. Emmons (1965) February 10: Rev. Edward Kennedy (2007) February 11: Rev. Louis M. Letko (1981) Page 5
