4 St. Thomas More Parish Munster, Indiana Feast of Christ the King A man once told me that once a month he goes to the Veterans Hospital and visits patients. He began the practice 40 years ago when he was discharged from the service. His friend had carried him to safety when he was wounded in battle. He wanted to honor his friend by reaching out to other veterans in need. He called it his living tribute of thanks. In the Gospel, Jesus portrays the Son of Man as He judges all people. His judgment is not based on what sins we committed, but on what good we omitted. What we know now as the Works of Mercy are the ways in which we offer to God a living tribute of thanks as we serve Him in each other. We honor the sacrifice of Christ the King by how well we treat and respect those who are His brothers and sisters. He comes not to find our faults, but to find our goodness, seen in our willingness to love each other. The end of one Church Year is the beginning of the next. Resolve now to offer your tribute of thanks. Do something for others, with no expectation of anything in return. Feed the hungry, bury the dead, visit the sick, and counsel the doubtful. The only thing we can truly offer to God that He does not already have is the time and effort we spend to imitate His love for us. Our actions cry out, Hail to the King! P lease pray for the sick of our parish... 5 The Pastor s Page November 20, 2005 OUR FORTY HOURS PRESENTER As you are already aware, today, Sunday, November 20th, we begin the time-honored tradition called Forty Hours. Why Forty Hours? Well, Forty Hours has been a part of the prayer of the Church for centuries. The Church has gathered to pray, in a special way, in front of the Eucharist Lord for God s divine blessing as well as protection. One of the reasons that we have chosen Forty Hours is that the number forty is a special number in Old and New Testament literature. We hear about the Israelites being in the desert for forty years in search of the promised land. We say that Christ was in the desert forty days fasting and praying before the beginning of His public ministry. We modeled the time of forty as we have fashioned the Season of Lent (forty days of penance before the celebration of Easter.) And now, for Forty Hours, we gather before the Eucharistic Lord in prayer, in adoration, and in reflection. As in most churches nowadays, Forty Hours no longer continues during the night. Most churches, sadly, must be kept locked after hours because of the amount of theft and vandalism. We will begin Forty Hours immediately after the 12:00 Noon Mass today with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The Sacrament will remain on the altar until this evening. At 7:00 p.m. tonight, Monday and Tuesday, we will hear a talk given to us by Rev. Brian D. Chadwick of the Diocese of Gary. Fr. Brian is Associate Pastor of St. Michael Church in Schererville. He is also the Judicial Vicar (presiding judge) of the Tribunal for the Diocese of Gary. Additionally, Fr. Brian is the media spokesman for the Diocese of Gary. Fr. Brian was very excited to be invited to be our Forty Hours speaker this year, particularly because two of his loves are Christ the King and the Blessed Sacrament. As our Year of the Eucharist has come to a close and the Feast of Christ the King is upon us, Fr. Brian has some very helpful insights to offer us in our journey to the Kingdom. I hope and pray that you will be able to do two things: 1. Spend some time in front of the Blessed Sacrament during our Forty Hours, and 2. Come to church each evening at 7:00 p.m. for an inspirational talk as well as for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Please consider it! ALTAR & ROSARY GRAND RAFFLE GLITCH Last Sunday, November 13, 2005, raffle tickets were drawn for the 15th Annual Holiday Bazaar Fundraiser. The First Prize winner is still unknown. That is because the person who purchased the First Prize ($1,000) ticket put the wrong end of the ticket in the raffle container. They put the long numbered end in rather than the part that contains the Name and Phone Number. If you hold RAFFLE TICKET NUMBER 28485, please bring your stub to the Parish Office to claim your prize. WHO PAYS FOR YOUR VACATIONS? When I returned from my two week transatlantic cruise last week, a couple of people asked me, Just who pays for your vacations anyway? I do, of course. Many people are under the impression that parishes supply everything to their priests: clothing, cars, vacations. That is just not true. A parish provides the priest his salary, housing and food allowance. The salary is set by the diocese in which the priest works. Some dioceses pay more, some less. Priest s benefits just as for any of our employees go toward health and life insurance as well as the diocesan retirement plan. [Retirement ages are set by the individual diocese as well. In the Diocese of Gary, priests are not allowed to retire until the age of 70.] From our salary, we are responsible for our personal expenses. Clothing, cars, vacations, additional retirement plans such as IRA s: all those are the responsibility of the individual priest. We make expenditures depending upon the ability we may have to save. Just like anyone else, some priests are spend-a-holics and others are very frugal. I am already putting money aside for another big cruise that I hope to take in 2008, since that is the year that I will be celebrating my 25th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. What about the pilgrimages I lead? I get a free position for bringing aboard a minimum number of people. Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for a number of years now. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: November 20: Deacon John Townsend (1987) November 26: Msgr. Stanley F. Zjawinski (1968) Page 5

Your sharing and caring is deeply appreciated. IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER -Reminds us of the history of creation and salvation -Father is the great planner, the Head, the Seat of Intelligence, ideas, plans, concepts, and designs. -The great God who has a great plan for creation and salvation. This plan was rooted in the creation and salvation. Unfolding through them. -It makes me relate to the great planner in which I don t have to compete. To relate to someone greater than me, for us to recognize that we are facing someone here bigger, deeper than my mind. To someone I cannot boast. -Touching your forehead means we want to empty all our presumption and open to it to Him, as source of all Wisdom. IN THE NAME OF THE SON -This emptying movement, an act of surrender to the Father. From the plan of the Father, He sends the Son. -Son of God took human form in the womb of the simple woman. -Obeying the will of God. Descending movement that means humility. For Jesus humility there is humaneness in us that he was alien of. So when we invoke the name of the Son, are we willing to be sent and obey the will of God? -The Son became man, the sacredness of being men. The dignity and honor of being men. IN THE NAME OF THE HOLY SPIRIT -We have to always depend and rely on the help of the Holy Spirit. No one can follow the will of God and live in the examples of Jesus without the Holy Spirit. -The Lord the giver of life, Holy Spirit will lead us to the life of Christ and plan of God. -Let us give some place for the Spirit of God to operate in us, to give us courage and strength to carry on. The spirit is stronger than us, more intelligent than us. Sacrificial Offering for November 13, 2005 Adults $24, Loose $1, Children $32.20 TOTAL $25, Thank you for your generosity! FOCUS Thanks you!
