6 St. Thomas More Parish Munster, Indiana Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time Our scout troop did a lot of camping years ago, and the best part was the Saturday night campfire. We would tell scary stories, especially about monsters that lived in the woods and only came out during weekend camping trips! The older scouts knew better, but some of the newer campers slept with one eye open, nervously waiting to see if someone, or something, should actually appear. We all were terrified of the unknown and the unseen. At times, the world can be a scary place. Evil manifests itself in hunger, disease, natural disasters, wars and all the ills that plague the human family. Uncertainty and fear seem to dominate everyone s thoughts and actions, isolating country from country, neighbor from neighbor. But all the power of evil can not overcome the strength of love and faith. Jesus tells his disciples to fear no one or any thing. The love of God is so great that even the hairs on our head are counted. We may be battle-scarred, but we are never defeated. Faith needs a bold proclamation. In the face of evil, fear, uncertainty and division, Christians must announce the good news, giving examples of courage, faith, love and hope. A fear stricken world will only seek peace when no one has to sleep with one eye open, but everyone can rest securely in God s peace. Do not fear, because the Lord is near! P lease pray for the sick of our parish... SUNDAY, June 19 2:00 pm Queen of Peace Cenacle ~ Chapel MONDAY, June 20 6;30 pm ~ STM Youth Group ~ Cornerstone ~ note date change 7:00 pm Adult Ed ~ Fr. 7 The Pastor s Page June 19, 2005 WELCOME, FR. MICHAEL HOFFMAN Typically, when a person is ordained to the priesthood at the beginning of June, they begin their assignment on July 1st, when most summer assignments begin. I guess Fr. Michael is far from typical! The bishop assigned him to begin his assignment at our parish last week, on June 15th. Welcome, Fr. Michael! OUR PASTORAL ASSOCIATE S FAMILY, PART ONE Last week we informed you about Mr. Mark Kurowski, who will be a new pastoral associate at St. Thomas More beginning this summer. As you remember, Mark is a seminarian who, Rome has instructed the Diocese of Gary, may be ordained a Catholic priest upon the completion of formation at, and recommendation of, a major seminary. He will be studying at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois beginning this fall. Mark is married and has five children. This week, I am writing to tell you about Mark's wife, Sandi. Mrs. Sandi Kurowski is a pediatric physical therapist who has almost twenty years of experience working in physical therapy. Her longest area of experience and treatment is pediatrics, but she has experience in home health therapy as well. She is a graduate of Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with a degree in Physical Therapy. Sandi currently is a supervisor in the Pediatric Therapy Department at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. She thoroughly enjoys working with the handicapped and especially the underprivileged population. She works closely with families in dealing with their children's disabilities and finding resources and agencies to help their situation. As a pastor's wife, when Mark was a Methodist Minister, she participated in the ministry of the Church through serving as a chairperson in the area of missionary ministries and participated in Christian Education areas, Vacation Bible School, Youth Ministries and the United Methodist Women. At her current parish, Little Flower Catholic Church, she serves on the Youth Advisory Council, provides Funeral Dinners and is an active Eucharistic Minister. Her hobbies are reading, swimming, and she would like to resume quilting when life slows down some. Mark and Sandi have five children. They are Caleb (15), Hannah (13), Luke (12), Peter (10), and Ruth (6). They will be the subject of next week s bulletin article. Please keep them in your prayers and think of ways you might be able to make this family feel welcome to our parish. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Mr. Gable had a leak in the roof over his dining room, so he called a repairman to take a look at it. "When did you first notice the leak?" the repairman inquired. Mr. Gable scowled. "Last night, when it took me two hours to finish my soup!" Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for a number of years now. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: June 20: Msgr. Edward H. Vurpillat (1969) Rev. Carl J. Holsinger (1978) June 23: Rev. Louis Madejczyk (1998) June 24: Rev. Antoniu Dunca (1981) June 25: Rev. Clarence F. Danforth (2003) Page 7
