1 Concerning times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober. 1 Thes 5:1,4-6

4 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time For more than twenty years, the Golden Apple Award has been given to Chicago-area teachers for excellence in education. The 2007 winner, Danna Dotson, says this about her pupils: "I insist that my students know they have a lot to offer in what they already understand and that they overcome their fear of being incorrect. I try to instill in them that the smallest contribution can have the most dynamic effect." Danna wants them to know that they are all given tremendous gifts, and no matter how small, they must be willing to invest the time to grow them and share them with others. At first glance, today's Gospel reading from Matthew appears to be a lesson in sound economic principles, but as with all of Jesus' parables, one must look beyond the obvious to discover the true meaning. Just as the man in the parable entrusted his servants with various amounts of money, God entrusts us with gifts. And just as some of the servants chose to invest his money, most of us use our gifts. But the servant who buried his coin is likened to those of us who fail to share our gifts with others. It could be said that the only consistent thing in life is that we are all different. But our differences-our talents-are what belong to God's plan, and God wills that each of us receive what we need from others, and that those endowed with particular "talents" share the benefits with those who need them (CCC 1937). This quite simply is the concept of sharing; a doctor shares his or her talents to save lives, an artist shares a painting to add beauty to the world, a teacher shares her understanding of the human being to bring out the confidence in her students. Do you recognize your talent? Do you share it with others? P lease pray for the sick of our parish... 5 The Pastor s Page FORTY HOURS Next Sunday, the Feast of Christ the King, begins our annual Forty Hours devotion. It will close Tuesday evening, November 25. On Sunday, November 23, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the main altar of the church after the Noon Mass. On Monday and Tuesday, November 24/25, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the main altar after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Each evening, at 7:00 p.m., there will be closing services. On Tuesday, November 25, our Solemn Closing of Forty Hours will include a Eucharistic Procession around the church. Since this year s Forty Hours takes place the week of Thanksgiving, the theme of each evening s homilies will be on the topic of giving good, holy, appropriate thanks to God for all that He has done for us. In the past, we have brought several visitors to speak to us at our Forty Hours devotions. I hope that you will indulge your pastor this year as I have decided that, instead of bringing someone in, I would like to preach at our Forty Hours. Gosh, I hope that does not scare too many of you away! Please, mark your calendars and plan to spend some time with the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. This is the Sacrament that gives us life, strength, and nourishment as we make our way to the Kingdom. Also, I ask you to plan some significant time each day during our Forty Hours (perhaps a daily Holy Hour) to spend in front of the Blessed Sacrament. When the Eucharist is exposed on the altar, there should never be a moment when the Lord is left without someone in church present. The time that you give to God will be rewarded. Count on that. There is so much for which we should render thanks to God. In preparation for our annual Forty Hours celebration, begin to count your blessings so that you may come to church ready to give Him praise and thanks. And, when you come to church, please remember to say a prayer or two for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, that we may always have priests to bring the precious Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to us. DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS You have seen, in the past several weeks of the bulletin, many articles on what has been going on in our parish effort to help those who were flooded a couple of months ago. The need is still there and many people will not even get into their homes until the new year. Thus far, the disaster relief committee in your name has written checks for over $80,000. Additionally, they have assured flood victims of your prayers and ongoing concern. Members of the committee also have given valuable information to the people in need on how to receive other funding, services, and aid of all types. I cannot thank enough of our parishioners who have been helping people clean and get into their homes, as well as all the parishioners who are contributing time and finances to those in need. You are definitely putting your faith into practice. As Thanksgiving comes around this year, it will be very easy for me to be thankful. Thank You for showing such a compassionate face of Christ to our community! For the Christian there is no such thing as a stranger. There is only the neighbor: the person near us and needing us. In preparation for Thanksgiving, please join the National Council of Catholic Women in their Annual Day of Fast on November 20, (The Thursday before Thanksgiving.) The day is an opportunity to consider those who will not be as lucky as many of us will be and to share their pains of hunger before we embark on a holiday feasting. Here are a few suggestions for your day of Fast: 1. A Fast can take whatever form your health and circumstances dictate. Anything from eliminating between meal snacking to a water only fast can be productive, as long as it stimulates prayerful consideration of the needs of the poor. 2. Consider contributing to the alleviation of hunger the monetary difference between what you consume while fasting and what you would normally consume. Consider donating that money and/or food and paper products to our St. Vincent de Paul Society as they prepare baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas for needy people. 3. Learn more about world poverty by visiting the webpage of the Catholic Campaign against global poverty, This is a joint project of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Leadership and the Catholic Relief Services.
