4 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Within the private chapel of the Pope at the Vatican, an icon referred to as the Mandylion of Edessa sits behind a gold frame. It purports to show the face of Christ on a cloth; legend has it that Jesus himself sent it to King Abgar of Edessa, having pressed his face into it to create the image. Like the Shroud of Turin, people look at this icon and wonder if it is truly an image of the Son of God. How do you recognize Jesus? Jesus asks his disciples who the people think that he is; remember that the people had been awaiting a kingly savior, so this very common, ordinary man was thought to be Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. They had not seen him or met him, and even then might not have been convinced. But Peter, speaking from the heart, recognized him as "the Christ, the Son of the living God." The physical characteristics of the Son of Man should have little or no matter in our lives today; what is important is to remember that we are taught that Jesus Christ is the light of all humanity, a light that shines so brightly for all the world to see that we have no trouble distinguishing it as anything else (CCC 748). Like Peter, look to your heart for the loving light, and boldly share it with the world to the best of your abilities. 5 WHO DIED AND MADE YOU GOD? That question has often been asked through the years as a kind of way of letting someone know that they are attempting to be way too in control of a situation. The question implies that the person appears to consider himself more important than God. That is the very thought of our second reading this weekend. A quote from that reading is on the cover of today s bulletin. Here is the entire reading: Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor? Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid? For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. I truly believe that this scripture is one that should be reflected upon over and over again. It should be read regularly and prayed about routinely because it truly helps to put everything in perspective. The perspective, quite simply, is this: God is God. We are not! Sounds so simple to say, does it not? And yet, we spend so much of our lives trying to force our will on to God, to make God do what we want. However, when we let God be God, we come into contact with the immensity of His love. I remember a cruise that I took several years ago. It was a transatlantic cruise, the only transatlantic cruise that I have ever taken. I can remember vividly day three of our crossing. We said goodbye to land three two days beforehand and would not see land for another three days. All we saw was water, and more water, and more water. Not even another ship was seen. Just us and the water. I had a unique perspective of immensity at that time and felt quite small, quite insignificant. Just like some people feel when they go into an incredibly huge church like St. Peter s in Rome. We are small. God is immense. And in His immensity, He has a plan for each and every one of us. The sooner we realize that, the sooner we come to accept that, the sooner we quit fighting that, we will begin to feel the peace that only God can bring into our lives. After all, who, really, wants to be in charge of this universe? Let us leave that up to God! The Pastor s Page THE PANAMA CANAL Tomorrow, August 25th, we will go through the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal is approximately 80 kilometers long between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Canal uses a system of locks (compartments) with entrance and exit gates. The locks function as water lifts: they raise ships from sea level (the Pacific or the Atlantic) to the level of Gatun Lake (26 meters above sea level). Ships then sail the channel through the Continental Divide. The water used to raise and lower vessels in each set of locks comes from Gatun Lake by gravity; it comes into the locks through a system of main culverts that extend under the lock chambers from the sidewalls and the center wall. Ships from all parts of the world transit daily through the Panama Canal. Some 13 to 14 thousand vessels use the Canal every year. In fact, commercial transportation activities through the Canal represent approximately 5% of the world trade. The Canal has a work force of approximately nine thousand employees and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing transit service to vessels of all nations without discrimination. If you re one of the kinds of people that spend a lot of time on the internet, you can possibly catch a glimpse of the Disney Magic moving through the Panama Canal locks by viewing their live cam: photo/camera-java.html I will try to post the schedule for the Panama Canal crossing at: Watch for me. I will be waving to you from my balcony! ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A group of junior-level executives was participating in a management training program. The seminar leader pounded home his point about the need to make decisions and take action on their decisions. "For instance," he said, "if you had five frogs on a log and three of them decided to jump, how many frogs would you have left on the log?" The answers from the group were unanimous: "Two." "Wrong," replied the speaker, "there would still be five. Because there is a difference between deciding to jump and jumping." Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: August 24: Rev. George Angemaier (1948) Msgr. Michael Shea (1956) August 29: Rev. Valerian S. 8 RESPECT LIFE CORNER Could you be a model for God if He had a fashion show today? Speaking to youths in Australia on July 18, Pope Benedict XVI mentioned modesty as he told of how becoming fully human means respecting (some) voices that lead us... "People sometimes treat others as objects to satisfy their own needs rather than as persons to be loved and cherished. How easy it is to be deceived by the many voices in our society that advocate a permissive approach to sexuality, without regard for modesty, self respect or the moral values that bring quality to human relationships. This is worship of a false god." About those pants... it is about modesty!! Some towns in Illinois are actually considering passing an ordinance about the wearing of pants! And this time it's pointing to *GUYS' modest dress. You've got that right! Are their pants falling down or what? And the *GALS' so tight--full of "wrinkles"-- that they do not hang right! (*GUYS and GALS meaning all ages.) We ask---"the moral of this is...??" Answer--- Shape up!! Be modest. AN INVITATION!!!! STM SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB Do you find yourself looking for friendship, fun and laughter? Then consider joining our Senior Citizens Club. We serve coffee and dessert after each meeting and then we play bingo or enjoy a short program. During the year we have luncheons and many interesting parties. We extend friendship to each other and support all our various church activities. There are also many special spiritual benefits for our members. Our next meeting will be Wednesday September 3rd, in the Solar Room at 1 p.m. We welcome all guests. Questions? Call Mary Wilson at WHY DO I HAVE TO BE A REGISTERED PARISHIONER? People need to be registered, contributing and regularly attending parishioners at a church so that they might receive the sacraments. Many times a person will contact a church because he or she wishes to be married, have a child baptized, or any other number of reasons. Without being registered and attending Mass regularly permission is often denied. If anyone wishes to be married or have a child baptized at St. Thomas More, that person would have to be a parishioner for at least six months before beginning the process of preparation for marriage or before a child could be baptized. Why? Parishes regularly require registration and contribution to ensure that a person is fulfilling some of the most basic obligations of the faith. Attendance at Mass and contributing to the work of the church are basic requirements for Catholics. If you are an adult and are not yet registered on your own, we highly encourage you to register as an adult member of the parish so that you will be ready to receive sacraments as you need. In June, you returned 170 baby banks with a total of $3,908.05! $977 goes for our share of the 800 telephone service and printing literature. The remainder is for us to use in helping the moms. May God bless you for your generosity. We thank you on behalf of the moms that we will be helping. We would like to get the other 380 baby banks back - even if empty - so that they can be used again. You can drop them off at the parish office or bring them to our next meeting on Saturday, October 11th at 9:30 a.m. in the Solar Room. So many have said that they want to help but can't devote a lot of time to the Project. Here are three ways to help us now. 1. Gabriel Angels are working with a mom in Valparaiso who is in need of maternity clothes. While we're looking at garage sales, if you have any maternity clothes that you'd like to donate, please call Marilyn Glennon at We'd rather spend the money on diapers and baby formula. 2. Also, when we first visit a mom, we bring her a little gift bag with some small toiletries and a baby item such as a receiving blanket or booties. We're almost out of these items. If you can donate some it would be greatly appreciated. Call Stephanie Kutcka at The Moms Club assembles these gift bags for us. 3. Pray for our moms, their babies and the Gabriel Angels working with them. Holy Name News Attention all members! Our next meeting will take place on Monday, September 15th in the Cafeteria. The meeting starts at 7:30 pm, come early at 7:00 pm for the praying of the rosary. Video and pizza/refreshments will conclude the meeting. Fr. John Corapi s latest video Since You Asked will start our video series. New members welcome! Page 9
