1 This water flows into the eastern district down upon the Arabah, and empties into the sea, the salt waters, which it makes fresh. Wherever the river flows, every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live, and there shall be abundant fish, for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh. Ez 47:8-9

4 Dedication of the Lateran Basilica It is said that the famous early-20th century sculptor Auguste Rodin was once asked how he created such beautiful statues from large pieces of stone. "It is very simple," he said. "I choose a block of marble and chop off whatever I don't need." Perhaps it could be said that as we grow older, we are doing just the opposite; continually adding layers of things we don't need, traits we shouldn't have, until we are no longer recognizable to God. We have simply become a large piece of stone. Today's Gospel reading from John is one of the more recognized passages from the Bible in that it is a rare description of Jesus showing anger and emotion. Finding a temple in which traders have set up tables to sell sacrificial animals to the people, he not only turns over their tables but grabs a whip and chases them out! After doing so, he turns to those remaining and says when the temple is torn down he will raise it again in three days. We know that the temple he referred to was his own body; we also must know in our hearts that he was asking us to remove from our temples all that we don't need, as well. Each year, billions are spent in an effort to look better, feel better, and fool the world that we are better than before. But if we simply look within and understand that we have a solemn responsibility, we would begin to shine, because the human body shares in the dignity of "the image of God"-it is a human body precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul, and it is the whole human person that is intended to become, in the body of Christ, a temple of the Spirit (CCC 364). Today, let's rededicate ourselves to cleansing the temple, to removing whatever we don't need, revealing God's beautiful creation. P lease pray for the sick of our parish... 5 The Pastor s Page THIS WAY, TOO, WE SHALL GO... As I reflected last weekend, death is the common denominator for all of us. No matter how influential, rich, or powerful we become, we all will die one day. And yet, there are many people who live each day of their lives denying that very reality. It is a part of our human nature, I believe, to fear death. In our fear, we often pretend that it will never happen. This can cause a lot of problems not for us, but for those we leave behind. As we continue through this month in which we remember the faithful departed, I ask you to consider something else that is very important: your own funeral arrangements. I can speak vicariously from the experiences of so many parishioners in the past or I can speak from my own experiences. We may be frightened of death; however, when we do not make provisions, we leave our loved ones in a real lurch. When both my parents died, I knew well beforehand what they wanted. I knew of any quality of life issues that they wanted the family to observe for them as they neared death and, when they passed away, I knew that all the arrangements had been made at the funeral home and cemetery. That was, to me, a great gift. It left me more able to process my own grief and to enter more into the moment with my family and friends. I have had other friends express all sorts of confusion, and even uncertainty, because they were forced to make arrangements for loved ones. They often wondered if they made the right decisions. Did they choose the right clothes? Did they pick the right cemetery? Did they choose the right kind of wake? They may seem like crazy thoughts, but when you go through them, they mean the world to those left behind. So, as we continue journeying through November, do yourself and your loved ones a favor. If you are advanced in age or are in poorer health, think about taking care of some of your final arrangements so that your loved ones are not overwhelmed at the time of your passing. And if you are younger, it s never too early. You can still make arrangements. Because of how it felt for me knowing that both of my parents wishes were in place, I went ahead and prearranged as well after their deaths. I know this column might be seen as a bit morbid but, hey, death is a reality: the ultimate, final reality. God bless you. NATIONAL HOSPICE MONTH Since we reflect upon our faithful departed throughout the month of November, I guess it is very appropriate that November is also called National Hospice Month. Hospices help anyone with life-limiting illnesses. Hospice also helps the family of the one who is dying as they attempt to minister to the needs of their loved one. When someone s life is treasured and celebrated, death itself can be welcomed with open arms. It is in that waiting period of an inevitable death that the people of Hospice can work their magic. They provide great comfort and dignity to the dying. This comfort can be received at home or in a Hospice facility. I was with Bishop Grutka the last several weeks of his life as well as present in the middle of the night when he passed away. Hospice was a great help to us. So much so that I had no qualms about asking them to help my father and me as we took care of my mother who died of Lou Gehrig s disease. God bless all of those who work in Hospice. If you need their help, do not hesitate to call upon a Hospice facility. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it. The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, "Good morning Alex." "Good morning Pastor," he replied, still focused on the plaque. "Pastor, what is this?" The pastor said, "Well son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service." Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque. Finally, little Alex's voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, "Which service? Was it on Saturday night or at one of the Sunday morning services?" Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: November 10: Rev.
