5 The Pastor s Page September 3, 2006 WORLD VISION All parishioners are invited to attend an informational meeting after the 5:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, September 16 and the 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., & 12:00 Noon Masses on Sunday, September 17. One of our parishioners, pediatrician Dr. Katherine Gambetta will share information about World Vision. Refreshments will be provided for all who attend. The gathering will take place in the Solar Room. Dr. Gambetta hopes to join World Vision in its work by going to Africa in the very near future. World Vision is a global partnership conducting childfocused emergency relief, sustainable community development and advocacy in 99 countries worldwide. Staff in countries raising money and countries receiving assistance are equal partners in work which not only seeks to alleviate the suffering of the poor but to give them the means to eradicate their own problems. World Vision was founded in 1950 by Dr Bob Pierce in response to the needs of Korean War orphans. Since then it has grown to include fund raising offices in countries in North America, Europe and the Far East. Lately, more and more offices in countries traditionally perceived as beneficiary nations are also raising their own funds. World Vision projects may be grouped into two major areas: 1. long-term sustainable community development focusing on meeting needs identified by the community itself, like clean water, education, health care, agricultural improvements and public hygiene, and 2. short-term emergency relief, such as providing food, shelter and medical care to victims of natural or manmade disasters. Most relief projects are designed to transition smoothly into development activities. World Vision is Child-focused. Child-focused development starts with the recognition that children are the future of any family, community and nation. It means improving the lives of children by dealing with the causes of their suffering, not just the symptoms. We recognize children do not live in a vacuum, but in a larger context of family and community, and our work impacts all of these. For example, it is by resolving food insecurity issues in a community with irrigation systems, improved seeds and training to farmers that their children eat better and are healthier...not just this year, but in the foreseeable future. Children are the most vulnerable members of any community. Project activities are always tailored to have maximum benefit for them. I hope you can attend the sessions the weekend of September 16/17th. LABOR DAY & DIGNITY We celebrate Labor Day tomorrow, September 4th. As we do so, it gives us a good opportunity to reflect and to pray. Reflect we think about the necessity to work. It gives a sense of fulfillment to an individual as it supplies that person with the income needed to care for self as well as for family. We know that a good work ethic is indicative of a solid, wholesome character. Pray we pray that all people are provided the dignity of work. Furthermore, we pray that all laborers are treated with dignity. This certainly seems to be an important factor in today s world when so many jobs are lost, outsourced, combined, et cetera. HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING CATHOLIC? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.) has been created just for you! Each year we begin sessions culminating in a person s entry into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil Mass. If you are not Catholic and are considering joining the Church or if you were baptized Catholic but never went any further in the faith to receive the other sacraments you are invited to attend an Inquiry session designed to outline the program and to give you basic information about what we do. The Inquiry Sessions will take place September 19th & 26th. You need attend only one of these sessions. R.C.I.A. will begin on October 3rd and will meet each Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Solar Room. Call Sr. Marilyn or Fr. Mike if you have any questions. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A five-year-old couldn't wait to tell his grandfather about the movie he had watched on television, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." The scenes with the submarine and the giant octopus had kept him wide-eyed. In the middle of the telling, his grandfather interrupted him, "What made the submarine sink, was it the octopus?" With a look of incredulity the five-year-old replied, "No, Grampa, it wasn't the octopus. It was the 20,000 leaks!" Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for a number of years now. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: September 7: Rev. Joseph P. Smith (1986) September 8: Rev. Roman S. Wojcicki (1963) September 9: Rev. Paul P. Jakulevicius (1992) Page 5

Do I practice good stewardship of the gifts I have received by using those gifts to benefit all those less fortunate? Sacrificial Offering for August 27, 2006 Adults $22, Loose $ Children $27.38 TOTAL $23, Thank you for your generosity! Munster, Indiana CONTINUING THE JOURNEY It was an odd day. It started with a phone call about Mass times. I knew mom s birthday was near but I put it out of mind. I did not plan anything special. I did not have a scheduled Mass. The rest of day went as usual but around 4 o clock the calls started again. What are you doing? Want to get something to eat? No, not hungry. More phones calls. Let s get together for a drink. More phone calls, ok let s meet. The teasing started, you forgot mom s birthday, didn t you? No. Just didn t remember, there is a difference, you know. One is deliberate, and one is just my normal early Alzheimer s. I was not the only one with early Alzheimer s because as soon as my sisters, brother, brother-in-law, and I got together the first words were, what are we going to eat. A few minutes ago we all said we were not hungry. Or was that just the answer we always gave mom. It was a month since mom died, and today was her birthday. Mom, I am not hungry never stopped the 90 pound lady from trying to put weight on you. Here, try this, it s good, This pie, this cake, this cookie is good, try it. This last month we all lost five pounds. There was no jar of windmill cookies, the kind you use to get at Goldblatt s. Even after mom lost her eyesight she would still push that cart through Meijer s to find the windmill cookies in the back of the store, just like Goldblatt s, not those packaged kind. We ordered out. We gave a special thanks to God for our parents. We broke bread and ate. We talked and talked. We laughed and when the tears started to form, we quickly shifted gears and continued the talk. We all went to our separate homes, secure in the love of our mother and father. Nothing special, but yet It would be an odd day that we were not secure in the love of our Father. Mom and dad taught us that. VIRTUS: Any volunteer directly involved or in contact with children is required to attend a VIRTUS training session. There will be a VIRTUS training session in the Solar Room on Tuesday, September 5, at 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday, September 16, at 9:00 a.m. Seating is limited so please call Sr. Marilyn at ext. 332 for reservations. 8 St. Thomas More Parish BABY ANN Week Nine: Our baby's fingerprints are now evident. If something is placed in the palm of her hand, she will curve her fingers around it. Her sex is now identifiable. Her organs are in place and have been. She feels pain. She has brain waves and a heartbeat. She can respond to her environment. She is moving, though it will be some time before her mother will feel her moving. "Quickening" is not the start of a baby's movement or life, it is just the first time the mother can feel it. There are finishing touches to be done, as there are with us. IS OUR BABY SAFE FROM ABORTION? No. Think about her. Is she a blob of tissue? Dr. Mary Calderone, former medical director of Planned Parenthood, and staunch pro-abortionist, had to admit in an article for the American Journal of Public Health (vol.50,no.7 [1960]) that, "Abortion is the taking of a life."[pg.951]. Is our baby's life so cheap that it can literally be tossed away? Have you named her? Maybe you should. She has everything else other people have. Pray for her and her mother.
