4 St. Thomas More Parish Munster, Indiana Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time We seem to have a fascination with picking the biggest, the best, the fastest. Pick a superlative adjective and we need to find a home for it. In sports, academics and even silly record breakers, we look for the proverbial number one and give it some recognition or a place in a record book. No wonder the Guinness Book of World Records is so popular and interesting! Jesus is presented with the daunting task of choosing the most important law for Jews. The dilemma is that there are so many laws, no matter which He picks, the Pharisees will argue that another law is a better choice. But His answer is impossible to dispute, because no law is more important than loving god and each other, since these are the principles on which Jewish laws are based. We are presented with this question almost daily. Which law for us is most important? Our answer is found in our actions. How well we treat others in traffic, how kind we are to those we work with, how loving we are to our family and friends, and how generous we can be to those less fortunate all answer the question. The opportunity to be the best witness for Christ comes along everyday. It s our choice how well we respond. P lease pray for the sick of our parish... 5 The Pastor s Page October 23, 2005 ROSARY: THE STORY OF GOD'S LOVE One day, Jesus turned to his disciples and said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!" (Luke 10:23). These words of our Lord can be applied to us when we say the rosary. In the mysteries of the rosary we see the Savior live his life of love all over again, and his life makes it plain that God is love. The Church teaches us to learn more about our faith, about the great mysteries of redemption. Even though Christ died and rose long ago, his saving work still goes on in the Church. We won't love very deeply unless and until we have become saturated with the mysteries of Christ. They are the heart and soul of God's loving work for us. In its [twenty] decades, the rosary gives us a way to reflect on the mysteries of our salvation. We can become so bogged down with the observance of laws and duties that we overlook the finer things of God. We can forget to keep our focus on God's love. Perhaps that is why Catholics sometimes find their faith so hard to live. Praying the rosary is a way to keep our focus. It requires not just that we think upon the mystery proposed for our meditation, but that we allow the Christ who is revealed in the living picture before us to work in us and through us. Thinking lovingly and praying as best we can means that we allow him into our lives. He becomes very real to us and so little by little takes a larger part in our lives. This is why the rosary is so fruitful and even so necessary for the ordinary Catholic. Many simply do not have the time to sit down and read the latest books on theology or the spiritual life. Often we cannot spend a long time in mental prayer. God calls us to our own particular apostolate in the world and in our families. And God calls us to a form of prayer that is appropriate to our needs. When that prayer leads us to know and love Christ, then we can bring Christ to the world. The rosary is a prayer that gives us an opportunity to make the daily and necessary contact with the redeeming Christ in the mysteries of his love. And as we look upon the life of Jesus during our rosary meditation, we ask Mary to obtain for us the grace of always remaining in the love of Christ. 1994, Liguori Publications / Used with permission OUR PRIESTS ON CONVOCATION A large number of the priests of the Diocese of Gary will be on convocation from this evening (Sunday, October 23) through Wednesday evening. Please keep them and our bishop in your prayers! THE TRIP OF A LIFE TIME A little over a year ago I came across the opportunity for a vacation that I have wanted to take for a long time: a transatlantic cruise. I took a flight to Rome on Friday, October 21st, and on Saturday, October 22nd, boarded Holland America s mswesterdam for my return trip home. We will be stopping at several ports on this 15 day cruise before ultimately arriving at Fort Lauderdale, Florida to disembark for the flight home. I was really happy to find this cruise because, on top of the joy of cruising, Holland America is one of the cruise lines that has a priest on board every one of its ships and offers daily Mass. So, even though I am on vacation, I will be able to go to Mass! I will be away from the parish until Sunday evening, November 6th. Since the ship has an internet café, I am hoping to share my cruise stories with anyone who may be interested. I have established a home page for the cruise and will attempt to update it daily. The page is found at: Thank you to Fr. Huber for volunteering to cover weekend Masses for me while I am away from the parish. Please keep me in your prayers these next couple of weeks. You will definitely be in mine! ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A pastor had a bad week. It seemed that everything that could possibly go wrong did. His meetings were fiascos. Different groups were bickering with him. It was a mess. So, on Sunday he was very frustrated and he began his sermon, "Everyone in this parish is going to hell if they don't change their ways." One man in the back began to laugh. This angered the pastor, so he said it again even louder. The man continued to laugh. The pastor went back to him and asked him why he was laughing. The man answered, "Because I don't belong to this parish!" Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for a number of years now. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: October 26: Rev. Joseph Klinker (1964) Rev. James A. Stapleton (1981) October 29: Rev. Walter S. Pawlicki (1980) Rev. Leo J. Armbruster (1994) Page 5

II Nate Adoba & Nicole Sage Sacrificial Offering for October 16, 2005 Adults $24, Loose $ Children $42.56 TOTAL $25, Pakistan $6, Thank you for your generosity! Getting to Know You Munster, Indiana My Homily last week seems to have resonated with a lot of people. Many expressed their agreement and thanks. The homily was about the natural tension between our spiritual life and our worldly concerns. How we are called to perfection, but that perfection will only come when we truly are at home with God in heaven. We will always have a holy longing on this earth. We are challenged to live for God, to care for our immortal soul, but God also put us here as caretakers of the GOOD he created, our families, our brothers and sisters in Christ, and the whole material world. Each of us needs to figure out how to do for ourselves with the help of the Church. For each of us is unique, not only to each other, but more importantly to God. We are in good company in trying to find this balance between our true longing and our earthly longing. Thomas Merton wrote in Thoughts in Solitude his expression of this tension, this discomfort. He saw that Christianity offers us the certainty of God s love and though it gives us confidence in God it does not completely remove the clouds of doubt that we are perpetually walking in. Merton says he has no idea where he is going. He cannot see the road ahead of him. He cannot know himself and just because he thinks he is following God s will is no guarantee that he actually is. Merton talks about his desire to follow God s will. This is important because it speaks of our essence. We are no robots, we are human beings. We are flesh and bone. We think and feel. God s will is not a written set of precepts that are applied the same for each of us. Keeping the letter of the law does not save; the desire to do God s will in all does save us. The desire to never do anything apart from God s will is a guarantee of having God there to help us with our daily struggles. I recommend to all the prayer from Thomas Merton s Thoughts in Solitude. You may read it on on-line at www. mertonfoundation.org or find it at Boric s Page 6

7 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 23, 2005 October 23, Walk-A-Thon On Tuesday, October 11th, the students of St. Thomas More School participated in the 9th annual Walk-A- Thon. Over $5,000 in pledges have been collected so far. The money raised will be given to the Benedictine community in Lipa, Philippines, a "twin" community to our sisters at St. Thomas More Parish. The money will enable young men and women in Lipa to attend a trade school. They will be educated in various skills, return to their village, and work to better their lives and others. Thanks to all who participated for their generous stewardship of time and treasure to help those less fortunate. International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima Visits St. Thomas More The students took a break from the Walk-A-Thon at 10 a.m. to participate in a prayer service in the church with the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima (also known as the Weeping Madonna.) After an opening hymn, Fr. Michael Hoffman said the opening prayer. Stacey Atwood, Principal of St. Thomas More School, then talked about the statue and about sacramentals in general. She explained about the miracles associated with this statue and about the petition box that was located by the statue. 8th grade students then led each decade of the rosary. There was a closing hymn and all of the children processed by the Weeping Madonna on their way out of church. It was a faith-filled and inspirational morning. Page 7
