2 As another year comes to a close, a new year begins. As we are coming to an end of the calendar year in December. The Church year is just beginning! Advent begins December 3 rd this year. Advent is the beginning of the Church Year. This year our focus in Worship is on the Message of the Angels to certain individuals and what message we can receive from them, too. The messages are for an old priest and his wife, an average guy, a young girl and a group of shepherds. For all of them the message is Christ is coming and you have a part to play in telling the world! That is our message, too. The Angels proclaimed the coming of Christ. We hear the message everywhere this time of year, but do we really listen? All of the stores blare out Christmas music this time of year, secular and religious. I have never had an actual angel visitation, yet I think these carols ringing out to us from speakers in shops may be the closest most of us will ever get. So the message to us might be: there will be Joy to the World when we hear about When a Child is Born! Do You Hear What I Hear? It is Hark the Herald Angels Sing that awakens us from our Silent Night. Now all that is left for us to do is Go Tell It on the Mountain that Mary s Boy Child is born in the Little Town of Bethlehem. As we go through all of the preparations for Christmas, let s stop and reflect upon the coming of Christ so we can, with the Angels From the Realms of Glory, see that Away in a Manger a savior is born. During the Advent Season, special prayer cards designed as angel wings, are used during the service to list joy and prayer requests. These cards are then attached to the wings of the life-size angel in the sanctuary. If you have a joy or prayer request and are unable to attend the Sunday service, please call the church office and one will be completed for you. Kim Anderson s beloved dog, Huckleberry, is recovering from recent surgery. Cameron Rose, newborn granddaughter of Bonni Korcok, has multiple medical challenges. Please pray for her family as treatment is determined. Len Hibbard is facing upcoming surgeries. John Evans is still recovering from eye surgery. 5 KRCC network members and those of the other faith-based churches that make up B.R.E.A.D. (Building Responsibility, Equality, and Dignity) voted on 11/13to make Youth and Family issues our new problem for We also heard updates on the Safe Neighborhoods Program which has been mentioned several times in the Dispatch in recent months. Council members Michael Stinziano and Elizabeth Brown also gave updates. The Juvenile Justice Campaign: Courts and Schools (Gail, Peggy Sorenson, and Erica Gonzales are on the committee) heard very positive news from Juvenile Judge Elizabeth Gill and Dr. Dan Good and Deputy Supt Dr. John Stanford. Gail Taschner The Children s Christmas Play will be presented December 17 th during the 10:30 am service. The angels will tell the story of the gifts God gave us in the form of a baby. Mitten, Hat, Scarf, Etc. Tree Watch for sales on warm winter accessories! The annual Mitten Tree is up in the Narthex waiting to be decorated with new mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and socks. You may donate these clothing items through the end of December. The Christian Education Team will be having a Birthday Party for Jesus after the morning worship service on Sunday, December 17. Everyone is invited to joing us for lunch and birthday cake as we celebrate Jesus birthday. December needs for the NNEMAP Food Pantry: Canned meats and ravioli-poptop cans, canned beans, canned vegetables and fruits, and cat food. Other hygiene items are always low! We always need dental items, razors and shampoo. Please place your items in the grocery cart in the coat closet. 5

6 Angels are all around us! Hebrews 13:2 tells us: Don t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it. (WEB) Few of us have had an actual Angel visitation. But what if an Angel visited you with a special message and mission for God?! We would be overwhelmed. That is why the Angels begin their message with, Do not be afraid. At this season we see images of Angels all around us. Have you ever wondered why? What is the message of the Angels to the parents of John the Baptist? What is the message to Joseph, Jesus s father? What message and mission did God express to a girl named Mary? Why did the angels sing on that glorious night to a bunch of shepherds? What does the message to Zechariah, Elizabeth and Mary and Joseph have to do with me? Does God have a message and mission for us? Throughout Advent and into the Christmas season, the sermons will be focusing on the visitation of the Angels to people surrounding the birth of Jesus. First, to Zechariah, an older couple, well established and affluent, yet unable to conceive a child. The message to him and his wife, Elizabeth, is that, no matter their age, God still has a mission for them. The message is Nothing is impossible with God. The second sermon is on Joseph, husband of Mary, who discovers his wife is with child and is told by the Angel that the child is the Son of God. The mission of Joseph is to be the father of Jesus and reminds us that God has a mission for all of us, no matter how unimportant we think we are to the work of God. The message is that we are to proclaim that God is with us. The third sermon is about the Angel s visit to Mary. The Angel s message is one of respect and honor to all who are a part of God s holy work of salvation. Mary is honored as the mother of Jesus and she accepts her mission. Her respons is that she is the servant of the Lord. The forth sermon sees the Angel s visit to the shepherds in the field outside of Bethlehem. Their message is one of blessing to ALL PEOPLE, even those deemed by society as outcasts. Their response is to Go and see. What is God s mission and message for them? On January 7, we will again look at the Angel s message to the wise men who come to find the one born King of the Jews. The visitation is one of respect and worship to a foreign king. They are warned by the Angel to return to their home without informing Herod of the location of the king. January 14 sees the holy family escaping to Egypt and then returning home after the death of Herod. 6
