3 Brethren, Notes From the Personal Representative Ill. Timothy Cable, 33⁰ Personal Representative of the Sovereign Grand Inspector General in California As we enter the summer months I hope you all have a great and relaxing time. On a positive note I m excited to say we are having a bang up year in our event center bookings. We have many great entertaining shows coming our way as the Ernest Borgnine Theatre continues to grow in its popularity. As I ve said in the past, these shows are here for your family enjoyment and I would hope you will come down and support them. On a sad note, I must say that something has happened to the programs we have historically supported in the past. Case in point, I thought Masons supported public schools. We used to but when we host a teachers appreciation night to honor high school level teachers here at the Rite, I was extremely disappointed in our turn out. On our last night in May there were less than 10 Masons present. This was extremely embarrassing to me as we, as a Fraternity, started the public school night in this state. I m at a loss as to what the answer is and how to bring you in for a dinner, entertainment and the award presentations we do for public schools and Law Enforcement. So much so, that I ve decided to try something new in the future. From now on all dinners will be absolutely FREE to all in attendance. I m aware that many Blue Lodge conflicts exist which prevent some of you from attending so I will schedule these future dinners on Friday nights. I ask all of you to please try and attend our up-coming Law Enforcement appreciation night on July 16th. By the time you read this we will have had our reunion class and then we go basically dark for the summer except for the musical plays we have coming up. These include a one day performance of Carmen, the opera, Into the Woods, Shout the musical, The Rock for Vets show just to name a few. These and more are all listed on our web site at a minimal cost. Thanks to all who came down and helped clean out our stage and prop room. They look great, but we still have a little more to clean out ahead. Also, thanks to all those who came down to assist Chuck in changing the several hundred 7 watt light bulbs which are more energy efficient and cost effective. This also included the theatre which was no easy task. Next year we will try again to schedule a long class. Please encourage new members to take the long class and remind those who have not seen the many other degrees to come on down and reach for the gold card. Our new honorees are: Harold Kennedy, 33 and those receiving K.C.C.H. honors are: Fred Cook, 32, Gilbert Cuevas, 32 and Michael Wittig, 32. That ceremony will be in San Diego in September. Here s wishing you once again a very happy, healthy and safe summer. God Bless. Fraternally, Tim JULY, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER

4 Notes From the General Secretary Ill. Chuck Bruggeman, 33⁰ THE AUTHORITY OF THE OLD CHARGES PUBLISHED IN THE PHILALETHES IN 1954 Little was known about the history of Masonry until late in the nineteenth century, for our oldest document, known as the Regius Manuscript, was not discovered until A.D. 1838, and was not published until That manuscript was probably written in A.D. 1390, and was thought to be a document which had been compiled about 1350 but had become lost. It is true, however, that the information contained within the written record of the Regius Manuscript has existed in the form of Masonic Tradition for many years previous to A.D After that time, we have evidence to show, Lodges based their authority on written documents which we now refer to as the old Charges. In the Masonic Edition of the Holy Bible, published by the Masonic History Company of Chicago, Brother H.L. Haywood writes about the Old Charges as follows: A body of men in the Middle Ages could not legally exist or work unmolested unless it had a charter or some similar document of authorization given and sealed by the authorities of the borough or else by the King or one of his officers. The Freemasons claimed that they belonged to a Fraternity which had received a royal charter from Prince Edwin at York in Athelstan s time, and held that this was sufficient authorization for holding a permanent Lodge. This claim was made in the middle of the Fourteenth Century. In substance the Old Charges consist of three parts: first, a statement of the grounds on which a charter had originally been issued; second, the claim to a written charter from Prince Edwin, said to have been a son of King Athelstan; third, a set of rules and regulations, called points, under which Lodge members were governed. Fraternally, Chuck Bruggeman 4 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER
