4 Consider a Table Lodge and Festive Board By Sanford Hoist, J. W., Southern California Research Lodge As the hour of nine approached during the Table Lodge held by Santa Monica-Palisades Lodge No. 307, Most Worshipful Steven Doan Past Grand Master of California rose and rapped his gavel once. Brethren it is a custom at Festive Boards that as the hands of the clock form the angle of a square at the hour of nine, we join in thought and make this a moment to be dedicated in tender, loving reflection to our absent Brethren. If any should be lonely or with strangers, they will feel at this moment that they are with their own Brethren. Thus may Brotherly love continue. The roomful of brothers rose as one and drank the toast to their absent brethren. The growing popularity of these Table Lodges has led to more lodges giving it a try in recent years. Among the reasons brothers offer this favorable response are the camaraderie of an evening devoted to eating and drinking, and a truly enjoyable ritual in which everyone participates. It should be mentioned that in most U.S. states this is not official craft lodge ritual, but rather more of a tradition handed down from one lodge to another. Other reasons for its popularity are the toasts made to groups of brothers, with almost everyone being honored at some time during the evening. It is also an enjoyable duty to raise your glass to other brothers as their worthy accomplishments are told, then toss back a shot in their honor. Lest this sound like a gathering of candidates for Alcoholics Anonymous, it should be pointed out that current tradition calls for soda to be available as an alternative to the wine generally used for these toasts, And even in lodges serving wine, as the night progresses more of the brothers find themselves switching to that softer alternative. The due form of these Table Lodges has evolved over time, but a landmark in its evolution came In 1989 when R. W. John Mauk Hilliard produced A Festive Board and Table Lodge for the Gentle Craft based on his research of existing materials on Masonic Table Lodges. This seems to have now became a standard source for Table Lodge ritual in the USA. The Masonic Service Association has published an excellent small book on this work titled Masonic Feasts, Banquets and Table Lodges (available from SCRL for S3.00). About ten Grand Lodges in the USA have adopted some form of table lodge ritual or guidelines, while the rest allow lodges to use the MSA booklet or similar guides. A listing of the Table Lodge ritual used by Burbank Lodge No. 406 is available from their website. How does a group of brothers start putting together a Table Lodge? James Lincoln Warren, Master of Santa Monica-Palisades replied, In 2005, Worshipful Ara Maloyan introduced our Table Lodge and Festive Board. Harry Maslin, P.M., was tasked with being the first Toastmaster, and adapted the Table Lodge ceremony amd, he has served as Toastmaster for every Table (Continued on Page 9) VISIT YOUR LODGES ANAHEIM LODGE #207: 303 W. 5 Yom Kippur Accountability, Apology and Forgiveness By Roy Ellis Steinfeld, 32, K.C.C.H., Senior Warden Lodge of Perfection Yom Kippur is the highest and most solemn of the High Holy Days in the Jewish religion. The essence of this sacred day the true root of the holiday includes but goes well beyond fasting and praying. It requires believers to make a personal, unflinching assessment of their character and conduct, not as an end in itself, but as part of a process of mandated self-improvement to meet our ultimate religious duty to become a person of exemplary virtue, a mensch. The definition of a mensch is someone regarded as being honorable, decent, and responsible and having strength of character. The essence of Yom Kippur is its focus on reflection, repentance and reparation. To clean the slate for a New Year, Jews must identify and accept accountability for all words and deeds that may have injured or offended others and seek forgiveness not only from God, but from each person we wounded in the past year. That s called atonement. The ritual is specific: One must convey an apology and ask forgiveness. The really hard thing is that the confession must be sincere and unconditional. Asking for a pardon while including self-justification ( I m sorry I said those mean things, but you hurt my feelings first ) negates the acceptance of accountability and often turns the apology into an accusation. But there s a great payoff. Once we ve properly expressed repentance, the offended party is morally obligated to forgive us. And, of course, we are required to forgive those who apologize to us. The point is, continuing to hold a grudge is not permitted. You don t have to be Jewish to appreciate and benefit from the wisdom of this practice as a way to strengthen our character and improve and repair relationships. As Brothers, we should always strive to find the good in ourselves and our friends. SAN DIEGO HONORS OCTOBER 14th THRU 15th, 2011 A block of rooms has been reserved at the Sheraton Mission Valley Hotel 1433 Camino Rio South, San Diego CA you must identify yourself as being with the Scottish Rite Valley of San Diego to receive the special rate of ($92.00) per night. If anyone would like to attend the HONORS, please call and make your reservations. Other details to follow for the banquet and etc BROTHERS A verbatim document found in the archives of the Long beach Scottish Rite, and written by Brother Carlton S. King, dated February 12, 1918 The sole mission of Masonry is to fit men to know the Truth and do it. To bring men to the ineffable height in which he can trace the G. A. of the U. plans. To teach men the WORD with which, alone, they can travel in foreign countries, work and receive Master s wages. To inspire men with love for the G. A., and for their brother workmen, yes, and for their work, by which love alone can they accomplish aught of preeminence and value in either their material or Spiritual building. From the first to the last, Masonry is an apotheosis of the worker. Tools of trade are our most impressive symbols. The Name of the first worker in Brass and Iron is our Pass. We raise Masons in the same sense that we raise a home or a Temple. Our E. P. Masonry presents as its first gift, working tools. The first lesson to the F. C., as his intellect is being awakened to LIFE, presents God as our divine Exemplar in six day s work, the Beginant Author of one day of well-deserved rest. The last word to the newly raised MM S given on the five points of fellowship, the sub word, is a glorification of the worker and reverential rememberance of the Builder and is our comfort and prompt relief in every time of sorrow, danger and distress. All along in Masonry we see the symbolism sustained. We build a temple, it is destroyed another, it crumbles to earth. In the solemn eighteenth degree we see a world weeping, over the ruin that has been wrought, darkness and gloom hovers over the ways of men, false gods have usurped the alters of God, the temple of TRUTH has been profained, the Blazing Star of HOPE has disappeared from the black night of error, the cubic stone of righteous government sweats blood, the WORD is lost, and the work has ceased. And yet behind the work is the Master, behind the worker is the G.A.O.T.U. His plans are infinitely wise, His supervision, infinitely skillful, His reward is infinitely sure only as His plans are disregarded does the work fail, only as His supervision is spurned, does the worker eer, only as His reward is disdained, does the temple of Spirit decay. His WORD is the key to all the intricate problems of the building, His LOVE is at once the divine call, and the blessed rewards of labor. Man cannot dream himself into character he must delve, hammer and forge. One listless prayer is the source of sluggards, but labor is prayer, which is always answered, And so, the S.R. Mason seeks HIS wisdom, Studies HIS plan, and applies HIS teachings. In this, the Rose Croix degree, we are given a new law. that ye LOVE one another. To learn to know that LOVE, is the highest expression of selflessness and is the noblest ambition that can stir the human heart. Wheather (Continued on Page 6) 16 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER OCTOBER,

6 BROTHERS (Continued from Page 5) as Captains of War, Captains of Church, or Captains of Industry, there is no final rightness, no final victory, except LOVE. No matter what the labor, without LOVE it is a task, and the worker is a slave to the task. With LOVE, no matter how menial the work, the worker is a free man, and Love s labor is never lost. This my brethren is the teaching of the Rose Croix. Without Love we labor in darkness, therefore in error, and the end is evil. With LOVE we labor in light, therefore in TRUTH, and the end is good. A Spiritual temple we build our pillars are FAITH, HOPE and CHARITY. Faith in God, our G.A.O.T.U. whose plans are perfect. HOPE in HIS wisdom, that immortality of bliss, which we win by following HIS plans, CHARITY, or LOVE of GOD, whose work we do, or man for whom we work, and of our work. For without LOVE LABOR IS VAIN. The Light from Heaven can never lead astray and the eternal stars shine out most brilliantly from the darkest skies. So we see that Rose Croix shining out in the dark night of error, selfishness, intolerance, and tyranny. What the temple of Solomon was without the Sheckinah above the M.S. will be the Spiritual temple in the heart of every Mason, without LOVE. (Please disregard any spelling, punctuation or grammatical errors, they belong to the original writer). DOOR TO THE OPEN HEART Holman Hunt s great picture, The Light of the World shows the Christ at midnight, with a lantern in His upraised left hand, while with His right He is knocking on a heavily paneled door. When the picture was unveiled, a critic is said to have exclaimed, Mr. Hunt, you haven t finished your picture, there is no handle on the door. That is the door to the human heart; it can be opened only from the inside. Mr. Hunt responded, Doesn t that teach us something in Freemasonry? All of us have often heard that passage of scripture, Ask and ye shall receive, seek and ye will find, knock and it shall be opened unto you. Have you noted that the important words, ASK, SEEK, KNOCK, are composed of a progressive number of letters, three in ask, four in seek, and five in knock, giving us three of the mysterious and sacred numbers of Masonry? Also the initials of the three words, A, S, K, give a repetition of the first word Ask. We use this passage of scripture to point out that the one wishing to become a Mason can t rush up to the door, open it and crash in. He must wait for it to be opened from the inside. Then, after we have received the degrees, we have to open our hearts to the lessons and teachings of Freemasonry. They can t be pumped into us through our ears. We have to open our hearts and incite inside what Freemasonry has to offer; what it is ready to give. There is no handle on the outside. Open your hearts Brethren, to our beautiful symbols, our beautiful allegories, and our beautiful teachings. 7 The Old Masters Wages I met a dear old man today, who wore a Masonic pin, It was old and faded like the man, It s edges were worn quite thin. I approached the park bench where he sat, To give the old brother his due, I said, I see you ve traveled east, He said, I have, have you. I said, I have, and in my day before the all seeing sun, I played in the rubble, with Jubala, Jubalo and Jubalum. He shouted, don t laugh at the work my son, It s good and sweet and true, And if you ve traveled as you said, You should give these things their due. The word, the sign the token, The sweet Masonic prayer, The vow that all have taken, Who ve climbed the inner stair. The wages of a Mason, are never paid in gold, but the gain comes from contentment, when you re weak and growing old. You see, I ve carried my obligations, For almost fifty years, It has helped me through the hardships and the failures full of tears. Now I m losing my mind and body, Death is near but I don t despair, I ve lived my life upon the level, And I m dying upon the square. Sometimes the greatest lessons Are those that are learned anew, And the old man in the park today has changed my point of view. To all Masonic brothers, The only secret is to care, May you live your life upon the level, May you part upon the square. WANT TO BECOME AN ACTIVE CONTRIBUTOR TO YOUR VALLEY? Marfield, 32, K.C.C.H., Librarian The Royal & Select Master Degrees In A. Pikes Formulas and Rituals While exploring Ill. Arturo de Hoyos, 33, annotated reprint of Ill. A. Pikes Formulas and Rituals, I came across the Royal and Select Masters Rituals that were included in the original Manuscript. It s my understanding that the AASR-SMJ had claimed authority for this System; sure enough, the Obligations mention the Supreme Council, 33. This is certainly fuel for another column, but I was more interested in another Item that I d located several years previous. We have a small collection of early photocopies of important writings and books from the pen of Bro. A. Pike; these are the old slick copies that some of you may remember. These appear to have been either prepared by, and/or previously owned by a certain Ill. Chas. Bennett, 33. Among these books, which vary from cardboard & staple to professional-quality cloth binding, are essays, books, and rituals from Bro. A. Pikes hand as well as others. Within this collection is a copy of A. Pikes Royal & Select Master Degrees, accompanied by a companion typescript, for those who may have difficulty with the Copyists cursive style. I found the text of both the Formulas and Rituals reprint, and the Bro. Bennett photocopy to be identical. As Bro. A. de Hoyos has made clear, these Rituals from Bro. A. Pikes time are considered obsolete, and should not concern the initiated reader. They will provide an interesting journey into a different Era of Freemasonic Ritual, one that I find particularly fascinating! If you would like to make the acquaintance of this Book, or the others, that were thoughtfully preserved for us by Ill. Chas. Bennett, please do visit your Scottish Rite Library, and I d be delighted to arrange an introduction! We ll see you there! We Need Books Hey Brother, can you spare a book or two? We need books to satisfy the minds of bright young Masons. (Please, books on Masonry only.) Thank you. We Sell Books Over the years we have collected multiple copies of books. When we sell these books, we raise money to purchase books we don t have. Contact Bro. Matt Marfield, 32, K.C.C.H., at the L.B.Scottish Rite. 8 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER OCTOBER,

If each of us were to give some deep thought to these items for our personal benefit, what a wonderful world would exist, and not just for Scottish Rite Masonry. Can do? Until Next Time, May God Bless you and yours. Consider a Table Lodge and Festive Board (Continued from Page 4) Lodge to date. As organizer of the Southern California Research Lodge speakers program, I was invited to be the guest speaker at Worshipful Warren s Table Lodge. Fortunately everyone drank several toasts before I spoke, at which point they would have applauded anything, so all was well. The unique character of these Table Lodges seemed to have formed among the influential military lodges of the American and British colonial period. Some of the earliest Masonic lodges in colonial America appear to have been field British soldiers and officers, into which a number of their American cousins were initiated. The Table Lodge has preserved this experience by requiring that all items be referred to in colonial military terms throughout the evening. The shot-glass used for toasts is called a cannon. The drinks are -shot from the cannons reasonable explanation for why the world calls that utensil a shot-glass today. Instead of drinking the toast down, you are called upon to drink it doon, with the appropriate colonial British accent. It goes on and on. And after the first few drinks it becomes surprisingly easy to do. Hopefully you will have a chance to experience it for yourself. And if you have already participated in a Table Lodge, consider lending your services to help a new lodge of brothers have this remarkable experience. It is no secret that brotherhood in a Masonic lodge is enjoyable and rewarding. The Table Lodge and Festive Board is enjoyable and rewarding times two. 12 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER OCTOBER,

10 Hand on my Shoulder By Roy Ellis Steinfeld, 32, K.C.C.H., Senior Warden Lodge of Perfection A few months ago I was working at Los Angeles International Airport and a young man was in front of me, about to go up to the security checkpoint. The man walked awkwardly as he felt his way with the cane. May I help you carry your suitcase? I asked. No thanks, I don t need any help with the suitcase, came the reply, But if you wish, you may guide me up this escalator so I won t run into anyone. I m blind and I have a new set of artificial legs, but I ve got to learn to make my own way in life. When we got to the top of the escalator I took the young man firmly by the arm to guide him through the crowd entering the security checkpoint. But the man stopped and spoke quietly: No, don t take possession of me, just guide me, please put your hand on my shoulder, that s all I need. Good words to remember when helping someone, whether it be during Scottish Rite, Lodge ritual or every day life s experiences. Put your hand on my shoulder and just guide me please A L L E G I A N C E The bodies of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, sitting in the Valley of Long Beach, Orient of California, acknowledge the authority and yield allegiance to the Supreme Council (Mother Council of the World) of the Inspectors General, Knights Commander of the House of the Temple of Solomon, of the Thirtythird and last Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, for the Southern jurisdiction of the United States of America, whose See is at the Grand Orient of Charleston, in the State of South Carolina, now sitting at Washington, D.C., of which Illustrious RONALD A. SEALE, 33, is Sovereign Grand Commander. The Scottish Rite Creed The cause of human progress is our cause, the enfranchisement of human thought our supreme wish, the freedom of human conscience our mission, and the guarantee of equal rights to all people everywhere, the end of our contention.
