4 The Inner Quest for the Lost Word By Charles L. Schubert, 32 In the Fourteenth Degree, we find that the perfect Elu is given the lost word as a reward for their knowledge and dedication. The Perfect Elu s have proven them worthy of possessing the lost word, and have attained the respect and perfection to receive it. And because of this, the Perfect Elu will be challenged to continue to seek the truth in the future degrees. The possession of knowledge is not considered a virtue but an open door to seek the truth, which in turn will develop into wisdom. This wisdom must be applied in all of our future endeavors. But is knowledge of the lost word a benefit to us? I personally think that receiving the lost word is only the beginning of the truth within us. We should constantly seek knowledge and disseminate the truth in all of our actions in life. In the first degree we are reminded to be good and true is the first lesson we are taught in Masonry. How does this relate to our day-to-day lives and what does it teach us? I feel that the lost word is given to us as a reward to continue the search for knowledge and wisdom. After going through the Scottish Rite degrees and receiving he lost word, it made a lot of since to me. Before beginning my Scottish Rite degrees, I was well reminded by the older members of the Scottish Rite that I had only received the substitute for the lost masters word, but not the true word. I was eager and excited to continue my quest for knowledge. Because of this, the degree of Perfect Elu became one of my favorite degrees. In the Fourteenth Degree, we are introduced to the word perfect or perfection. So how does this relate to the viewer? The perfection of this degree is related to Masonic or a spiritual perfection affecting ones own thoughts. I learned the philosophical understandings and the tenets to make me a better man. So why would a Perfect Elu care about a lost word? Was it a reward for his dedication, or was it of a personal satisfaction? I feel that the search for the lost word is given to individuals as a goal to improve themselves. This therefore, would relate to self improvement or self perfections. Is this perfection attainable? Yes it is. This can be clearly seen as each candidate begins his Masonic journey where he continually grows by being introduced to the first three degrees of Masonry. Each of the first three degrees will set up the candidate s Masonic journey for many years. In conclusion, I personally believe that we are all Perfect Elus seeking wisdom and knowledge about ourselves and about others. The search for the lost word is an inner quest among all Masons and should be set as a guideline for us to follow. With this quest, we all become Perfect Elus. We should continually strive to improve ourselves through truth and awareness. I consider that the lost word is more than just a word. It is an identification of ourselves. The Lost Word By Charles L. Schubert, 32 What does the lost word mean and how is it connected to the blue lodge and other degrees of masonry? This is a really hard question to answer. In our first degree we are introduced to certain supposed secrets. As we continue in the second degree, we again are introduced to unknown items contained in the Stair- case lecture. And finally we come to the end of the jour- ney with the third degree where we are told about the lost masters word, which creates another secret. When I finished my third degree, I was sure that I had all the secrets of masonry. Boy was I wrong. The true journey just began when I applied to the Scottish Rite and York Right degrees. I learned from these degrees that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. The light can only be obtained by knowledge, which is a continual process. It will never end because we are continually learning about others and ourselves. Why can something so important be a secret or lost and how can we find it? Masons should seek and find their own knowledge and truth. This knowledge to the individual man should be about himself and others. Each person that we meet has something to offer when applied to learning and truth. So what is the lost word and what does it mean to us? The lost word is anything that has not been a part of one s experience. It reveals who we are and why we think and act as we do. This brings about understanding in all of this. This can be clearly seen in all the degrees of Masonry, and especially in the first three degrees of the Blue Lodge where we are introduced to so much in such a short time. This becomes clearer only after going through many degrees. The lost word in our lives defines who we are as individuals, and what we think we can do. What is lost to each Mason is the true image of himself. A true Mason will use truth and knowledge from others and find himself. When this occurs, we will find the lost word within us. The lost word we talk about has many misunderstood interpretations, and needs to be applied to one one s life. The word we talk about could be the key to understanding each other. But I think it is a fine connection between each of us to express our opinions and to learn from others. I feel that this relates to blue lodge Masonry in that it clearly sets up the understanding that all of Masonry has certain secrets that are obtainable when directed in the right path. After all, we are not a secret society, but a society of secrets. So what is in a name or a word? We all know that the end result will be the ineffable name of God. The ineffable word is but a stumbling block that is set up during the third degree. It is later revealed during the degrees of the Scottish Rite and the York Rite degrees. This ineffable word or lost word is only an end result of our ability to seek wisdom. 4 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER JANUARY/FEBRUARY,

5 Virtues By Adam Buttons, 32, KSA As we begin the ninth degree, we are faced with new duties that only an Elu will be entitled to. This set of degrees will end in the fourteenth degree when the perfect Elu will be rewarded for his services. This reward will be that of receiving the ineffable word. In the ninth degree we are again reminded of the death our Grand Master Hiram Abiff. When first seeing this degree, I was confused to see assassins still around. This is much different from what I saw in the third degree, especially when the name of one of the assassins is revealed to be Hiram. This was the most confusing part of the degree to me. So what would be considered to be most missing in our society? After thinking this over a few days, I feel that loyalty is the most lacking in our society. To me, I feel that our society lacks the proper dedication and discipline to their jobs, their family, and themselves. We can see this daily in the newspaper as well on television. How many times have we seen people steal from one another and even their own families? This theft not only includes financial gains but has also attacked the moral principals America was founded upon. This lack of loyalty also attacks other virtues, such as courtesy and devotedness. The prime example of this is displayed when a person does not dedicate the time to his own job, or related labor. I have seen far to many examples of this from trips to the grocery store, or waiting for my car to be repaired, Many of the virtues displayed in this degree are now displayed in our everyday lives. They all relate to the foundation of the American way of life. In Masonry we are taught to continue our knowledge, thereby continuing our own personal growth. We are taught toleration and the ability to be guided by our own faith. This therefore can be related to the loyalty and support of our democratic government. According to Albert Pike, Masonry teaches us that all actions must be for the good of loyalty in the establishment of a free democratic nation. I firmly believe that our society is to busy and concerned about themselves and can no longer take care of themselves or be concerned about others. Now for the hardest question of them all, which virtue do I lack the most is self-denial. I don t accept the fact that stuff about me doesn t work. I was raised to fake it till you make it. I have had to be strong because I was to overly exposed to criticism, telling me what was wrong about me, not what was good about me, like my weight. I have been criticized and lectured about my weight since I was a boy. Because of self-denial, I have now started to pay for it, therefore I hope I will be able to improve myself by working on this virtue. The Burning Candle Within US By Adam Buttons 32, KSA Senior Warden Lodge of Perfection At the beginning of the 10th degree we are introduced to the theme of freedom, political and religious toleration. This was displayed when fifteen candles were lit to convey education and intelligence needed in our world. These lit candles bring to light the unjust in toleration and persecution from fanaticism, which was displayed by the assassins in the previous degrees. So how can freemasonry be like a candle burning to the darkness dispelling ignorance? First of all masonry teaches us to educate ourselves and increase our enlightenment within ourselves. The enlightenment within us can be related to a candle burning, displaying toleration and improving our beliefs in ourselves as well as others. When this light gets extinguished we can no longer improve ourselves and our doomed to fail forever. In each of the first three degrees we are brought from darkness to light and told to view the great lights of masonry. This eternal light within us can never be extinguished as long as we seek knowledge, wisdom, liberty and justice. The major goal of this light is to extinguish ignorance and learn the meaning of truth, to be good and truth is the first lesson we learn in masonry. This truth we all seek, can be considered the candle burning in the darkness. It sheds light on everything we do. Seeing truth, knowledge and wisdom has been man s desire since he has been able to communicate. We must remember our differences and remember that truth to one person is not the same to another. So how can this candle dispel ignorance among us? In the 11th degree, lessons learned are, life is a school and masonry is work. I firmly believe the Scottish Rite degrees were written to teach me that of which I have already known. This awareness of this obtained knowledge enforces my knowledge, actions with my country, family and neighbors. The enlightenment displayed in this degree relates to education, and that every person should be guaranteed an education regardless of their status. Each person dedicates and devotes their time to the education required in life. The greatest lessons to be learned are fortitude, cheerfulness and contentment. We are reminded from Albert Pike that it s never to late for man to learn. Every man should do all in his power to do the good work to protect the people, as displayed in the first three degrees of masonry. I feel that the burning candle in life is the light within every man s heart. This light must be tolerant against ignorance and stupidity. We must all improve ourselves by continuing to keep the candle lit within our hearts. Our journey takes us on a long and weary road and how we get there is up to us. The important lesson here is to never give up be in the light, enjoy the light and work in the light. Only in the light can masons truly work and make a difference. 16 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER JANUARY/FEBRUARY,

For those that have been lamenting the passing of that great old West Hollywood Landmark bookstore, The Bodhi Tree, there s been a reprieve. While recently making a Final Respects visit, I was informed that the bookstore, for the moment, plans to remain open until August, Although The Bodhi Tree specializes in titles that deal with Eastern Spirituality & Philosophy, they also have large selections in other kindred subjects, such as Alchemy, the Wester Mystery Traditions, Rosicrucianism, Mystic Christianity, and of course, Freemasonry. If this sounds like our kind of bookstore, The Bodhi Tree makes a very pleasant weekend (or weekday!) destination; but remember to take quarters for the parking meters! Be sure to tell us about your visit to The Bodhi Tree, or your own Book Safari, when you visit your Scottish Rite Library! We ll see you there! $3.00 per pin The profit of $1.00 goes to the Clinic. Meets First Thursday (714) Success in Life By Adam Buttons 32, KSA, Senior Warden Lodge of Perfection We are faced with many difficult tasks in our lives. Sometimes we are successful and sometimes we are not, but we continue to work hard so one day we will be successful. Sometimes we are rewarded for our success and other times we may fail in our endeavors. We should set our goals and obtain success. But not everything in our lives follows this plan, no matter how hard we plan for success, we may still find the many roads in life blocking our advancement. I know from experience in my life that things don t happen as I planned. It was very frustrating because I would follow all the rules and take the training only to find out I couldn t apply it to the profession I so dearly respected and wanted to be in, but did I give up the fight? No I didn t because I reset my goals and tried to improve myself by seeking wisdom through education and life experience. Because of this knowledge I have changed my outlook in life, and now seek to better myself in a new adventure. Wisdom is truly a gift that every man should seek in his own life. What should one do when they do not advance as hoped for in their own lives? I personally feel that you should not give up. When one door closes another door opens. The 12th degree (masters architect) teaches us that we should seek knowledge and improve our lives through wisdom. Education is the key to leading a successful life. Without a good education, many would be faced with many disasters in their lives. Many people work but fail to enjoy what they do. Work becomes a labor instead of a career of enjoyment. You have to be passionate in what you do, but this doesn t always have to relate to a career. This should also relate as that of giving to others. Many times this could be anything from money to advice. Sometimes a person might need someone to listen to. This could also be considered labor in your career. If things don t go right in your life or career you must be prepared to make a change. Everyone has been faced with this decision in his or her lives. In today s society we see people willing to make a change for their own survivability. Many times this change involves education and the willingness to learn a new profession or skill. Because of my willingness to obtain a better education or wisdom about others, and myself I feel I have become a better man. I have improved myself by realizing that I have a gift to help others. This gift enables me to support the various organizations and charities I have been apart of. In conclusion, knowledge is power. Every man should seek wisdom so he can make a difference in his life and that of others. Every Mason should transmit this wisdom. Because this wisdom and knowledge bring honor, understanding and self worth in every man that can convey it to others. 14 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER JANUARY/FEBRUARY,

It enlarges upon and explains and applies the Symbolism of Masonry. It exemplifies and makes clear the truths and allegory of the Blue Lodge and the first three Degrees. It presents an unequalled opportunity for the practical demonstration of the teachings of Freemasonry. It gives one a fellowship in its literature, with the deepest minds and purest characters of Freemasonry. In Memoriam MERLE G. CAPPS ALBERT WINETT WILLIAM A. HODGES GEORGE L. RICHARDS DALE CHRISTENSEN K.C.C.H. CAST It allows one to participate in the glorious work of spreading the doctrine of the Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man. It gives one a greater incentive to higher thoughts and nobler deeds because of a greater knowledge of one s responsibility and the history of the institution of the Scottish Rite. It creates within one a greater love for chivalry, a greater respect for philosophy and a never ending love for one s Blue Lodge. It enjoins on every brother the support of the American public schools; nonpartisan, non-sectarian, efficient, democratic; for all of the children of all of the people and equal education opportunities for all. It inculcates patriotism, love of the flag, respect for law and order and undying loyalty to constitutional government. It carries out the sublime principles of Masonry by cooperating in every way with Blue Lodges by maintaining an ever lasting interest in Masonry. It brings the Brethren from various Lodges together at frequent intervals whereby the spirit of Brotherhood and Fraternity is reflected in everyday living. 8 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER JANUARY/FEBRUARY,

Finally, may the spirit of the Christmas season accompany you throughout the coming year, and may you and yours be blessed with good health, good friends, family, and the may blessing of the holy Father shine on you in whatever talents you have to provide the essential support for those most precious to you. WE WISH YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR. Until Next Time, May God Bless You OKLAHOMA MASONIC DEGREE TEAM Submitted by Harold Kennedy, 32 Just about every Mason who has been around awhile has heard of the Oklahoma Masonic Degree Team. The Team got its start about 1948 and in 1950 the Team formalized its existence. Every year since they have performed the Master Mason Degree throughout the United States and Europe. Existing, for over 50 years, some of the original cast are still involved. The Native American Nations currently represented on the team are Apache, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek, Keetoowah, Oneida, Ottawa, Quapaw and Shawnee. In the past members have been Delaware., Kaw, Kiowa, Pawnee and Ponca. This is the oldest Degree Team in existence today because as a Team the group has never stopped or had a break since inception. Don t pass up the chance attend an Indian Degree. You won t regret it. [Empire Stale Mason Magazine, Summer 2010] WARDEN S COLUMNS Submitted by Harold Kennedy, 32 Q: Some Lodges I visit have columns at the Jr. Warden and Sr. Warden stations; other Lodges do not have them. Are they a requirement of Grand Lodge? A: No, when you attend a Grand Lodge Communication, you will not see them. It is not a requirement. They are a custom that goes back to 1761 where an inventory of a Lodge in Chester England included two truncheons for the Wardens. Truncheons or columns are the Wardens emblems of authority and their positions are of great interest. The column of the Senior Warden is erect, that of the Junior Warden on its side while the Lodge is at labor. During refreshments, the Sr. Warden s column is laid prostrate, while that for the Junior is erect, so the Craft may know at all times by a glance at either the South or West whether the Lodge is at labor or refreshment. It is an old custom, not a requirement.
