SEALE, 33, is Sovereign Grand Commander. We Need Books Hey Brother, can you spare a book or two? We need books to satisfy the minds of bright young Masons. (Please, books on Masonry only.) Thank you. We Sell Books Over the years we have collected multiple copies of books. When we sell these books, we raise money to purchase books we don t have. Contact Broz Matt Marfield, 32, KzCzCzHz, at the L.B. Scottish Rite. KNIGHTS OF ST ANDREW MEETING, SATURDAY, JUNE 12th L.B. SCOTTISH RITE AT 11:30 A.M. Notes from the Personal Representative Illz Joseph W. R. Ashwill, 33 Personal Representative of the Sovereign Inspector General in CA I would be remiss if I did not congratulate our 22nd degree cast for their presentation on Saturday, April 10. We were able to get their picture in last months Reporter, however our comments were missing regarding their fine performance. Considering that Honz Ian Anderson 32, KzCzCzHz, degree master, formed his cast in a very short time, and their performance was done the old fashioned way, through memorization of their individual characters. It was also noteworthy that Mike Day 32, John Hix 32, Jim Locey 32, Wayne Caverly 32, and Stewart Williamson 32, are all relatively new members, and the only honor men were recently Knighted Honz Dan Ewers 32, KzCzCzHz, and Honz Ian Anderson 32, KzCzCzHz, degree master. All are members of Huntington Beach #380, a cohesive group of brothers worthy of emulation. As I write these notes before our attendance at the Southwest Regional Reunion Class V, in Phoenix, AZ, I am pleased to report that our 12th degree cast, with Honz Johnnie Reynolds 32, KzCzCzHz, as degree master, are well prepared for their presentation and I am sure they will be representative of the historic fine work of the Long Beach Scottish Rite Players. We also will have three new young initiates who are members of Lakewood Lodge #728; Joe Williams 32, Frank Lopez 32, and Joe Mix 32, who is the Grand Nephew of the late Illz Tom Mix 33, who purchased the original carpet for our Cathedral. They, each have advised me that they want to be actively engaged in whatever capacity they are needed to support our Valley, and their enthusiasm is something to behold, I look forward to planning and working with them as we move into the future. We have a busy schedule this month, in addition to our regular Ladies Night Dinner Friday, June 4th, followed by our Stated and IzGzAzCz meetings on Tuesday June 8th, with our presentation of our Reunion Class Friday, June 11th of the 4th and 14th degrees, and on Saturday June 12th we will begin the day with a presentation of the 15th degree, followed by the 18th, 30th and lunch at 11:30 and conclusion with the 32nd degree. I hope to see you at our June Reunion. Last month I mentioned the importance of new members and offered the opportunity to obtain a year of paid dues for 2011, to any brother presenting five Petitions by May 7th. I realized that was a very short period, therefore I am extending this challenge to the November Reunion Class the 19th and 20th. All Petitions will have to be presented by October 5th in order to meet the requirement of two readings. Until next time, May God Bless You JUNE,

4 Fathers and Sons Submitted by Roy Ellis Steinfeld, 32, KzCzCzHz What are some of the good things you think about when you think of your father? I remember that my dad was smart, creative and fully devoted to his family. I remember he loved me and always showed it. Finally, I remember his relentless insistence that if I wanted something badly enough I could get it. His mantra if there s a will there s a way; is still deeply etched in my psyche. He was a very good dad but he wasn t a perfect person and, as a critical and rebellious child, I often catalogued his faults and undervalued his virtues. While I always loved my dad, I expected perfection and, when he fell short, I took it personally and judged him harshly. That s not uncommon. Young sons often think their fathers are heroes, bigger and better than they are. Later, when they discover they re more ordinary humans with flaws and shortcomings, they think they re worse than they are. Both fathers and sons want to be loved, but it s also important to be appreciated, respected, and since you don t have to be sick to get better, Father s Day is a good day to start judging more generously. If you look for virtues and good memories, you ll find plenty to be proud of and grateful for. In Observance of Flag Day Submitted by Roy Ellis Steinfeld, 32, KzCzCzHz In observance of Flag Day, I would like to share with you a preamble given by our late Brother, Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block, on March 26, 1995, at the Los Angeles Masonic Service Breakfast: Just as many of our traditional values and concepts have been altered or forgotten in the complexities of today s society, the ritual of the Flag Salute has become somewhat of an exercise in rote a mechanical uttering of words without much reflection upon the meaning of those words. As we prepare to go through that ritual, I believe it would be appropriate for us to pause for a moment and reflect upon the blessings we enjoy because we are Americans. Writers and speakers have long strained their talents in attempting to define that special something we call Americanism. We know what exemplifies it our Flag, The Fourth of July, Baseball, Apple Pie, Free Elections, and of course, the opportunity to gather wherever and whenever we desire yet we seem unable to nail down a dictionary definition of Americanism. Perhaps no one can because Americanism, like our Masonic Fraternity, really deals with profound ingredients of the spirit a basic decency, a certain faith, a belief in the quality of people, a respect for the individual, a commitment to life, and an optimism that knows no bounds. Now, as we face the Flag of our Great Nation, each with our right hand over our heart, let us consider what our Flag really represents. It is just possible that the very word F-L-A-G is an acronym for the words Faith, Love, America and God. Thank you Brother Sherman Block for the preceding words which we can still find most appropriate in the Twenty-First Century. THE SNEEZE Submitted by Roy Ellis Steinfeld, 32, KzCzCzHz They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium with rich maroon gowns flowing and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt. Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears. This class would not pray during the commencements not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it. The Chancellor, President and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families. The speeches were nice, but they were routine until the final speech received a standing ovation. A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened. All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED!!!! The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said, GOD BLESS YOU, each and every one of you! And he walked off stage... The audience exploded into applause. The graduating class found a unique way to invoke God s blessing on their future with or without the court s approval. Isn t this a wonderful story? In God We Trust, United We Stand. This is purported to be a true story; it is said that it happened at the University of Maryland s Graduation ceremonies in If true, it is inspiring to know that God is not a footnote. 6 Library Corner By Matthew T. Marfield, 32, KzCzCzHz, Librarian Change It is said that the only constant in the universe is change. A couple of weeks ago, I learned that the Bodhi Tree, that wonderful, homey, and Bohemian Book Store that caters to the spiritually bent booklover will be closing at the end of the year. Tired of running their business in the red, with the advent of cut-rate internet bookstores, the owners have decided to sell the valuable real estate, and retire, all the while hoping that the clouds will part, and a wealthy soul will take the Bodhi Tree and transplant it. Opened in 1970 by Phil Thompson and Stan Madson, two Aerospace Engineers looking for a change, the Bodhi Tree has become a landmark of sorts for spiritually inclined seekers of every color. Named after the famous tree under which The Buddha gained enlightenment, it became the center of the wheel for a lot of people; Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood was never the same since. I ve lucked into some obscure Masonic and Hermetic titles in the little Used Book building, and have introduced myself to the Ancient Mysteries, tasted Hebrew Mysticism, and wondered at the Mystic Christianity and Pagan elements of the Grail Romances. If any of you have the slightest inkling to experience this bookstore, or would like to go once more, you will have a little more time. As for myself, I went home with several titles, including a copy of Wallace-Murphy s The Enigma of the Freemasons, which I have earmarked for our Scottish Rite Library. Since WE at the Scottish Rite Library have no intention of closing, we ll see you there! 50 Year Recipient, May 7, 2010 Broz Peter Hayes. 32 He is also a member of Long Beach Lodge #327 SUMMER Submitted by Barbara Ashwill Find and circle all of the summer words that are hidden in the grid. 7 Taking My Grandfather s Quarter Submitted by Roy Ellis Steinfeld, 32, KzCzCzHz Recently thoughts of my father and grandfather have come to mind as Father s Day approaches. It is sad that both of them have passed on to That House Not Made With Hands, Eternal in the Heavens. I recall how they both imparted to me wisdom, morals and ethics, of how a life in our society should be led. For over 35 years I have embraced Masonry and Scottish Rite Masonry because of the many morals and ethics that ring true from my youth. More than 50 years ago, when I was five, I was at my grandfather s house. He told me I could go into the kitchen and get a cookie. Next to the cookie jar was a stack of quarters. I knew I shouldn t have, but I took one. I must have looked guilty when I returned because my grandfather looked at me funny and asked me to show him my hands. I had the quarter in my right hand so I held out my left. Show me the other hand, he said. When he saw the quarter, he looked at me sadly. He hugged me and said, Roy, you can have anything in the world I have, but it breaks my heart that you d ever steal it. I ll never forget the shame, and I never stole anything again. My grandfather understood this was a teachable moment and didn t shy away from his duty to provide unambiguous moral guidance. He did so in a manner that made the experience a permanent marker in his grandson s life. Without harsh words or punishment, he established high standards and expectations and taught me that, because of his love for me, he was a stakeholder in my choices and that he was hurt when I let him down. An informed healthy conscience is a built-in punishment/reward system that makes us proud when we do things right and ashamed at our moral missteps. But such a conscience doesn t develop by accident. We as Masons and Scottish Rite Masons must remember to keep the moral and ethical teaching of our Fraternity constantly within our minds and our lives. MEMBERSHIP LET S STOP FIDDLING AROUND! A MASONIC BULLETIN (Continued from Page 10) until today its wonderful achievements stand forth as a record for all time. On a pleasant night in the early part of June, in the year 1924, six men, one of them a new arrival in Long Beach, sat in the lounge of the Masonic Club in the Pacific Southwest Building (now the Times Building) smoking and discussing matters Masonic. I heard an astounding statement today, commented the newcomer. I was informed there were not less than five thousand unaffiliated Scottish Rite Masons residing in Long Beach and the immediate vicinity. Is that correct? He was assured that it was not an extravagant statement. Then why haven t you the Scottish Rite Bodies here? he inquired. Surely the number is sufficient to support such an institution. I imagine the absence of the Bodies here is due to your proximity to Los Angeles, replied one of the men. Nonsense, interposed another, Pasadena has all the Bodies and their distance to Los Angeles is less than to Long Beach. The best way to determine whether we can establish the Bodies here is to make the effort. Let us try to bring the Bodies here, cried Dr. Grant Willis, 32. Thus germinated the idea which set in motion the machinery to bring the Scottish Rite Bodies to Long Beach. A committee of six, consisting of Grant Willis, 32 ; Roscoe Withers, 32 ; E. J. Del Porte, 32 ; O. E. Stritch 32 ; Will T. Walker, 32, and Joseph L. Stiebel, 32. was appointed with full power to act. The first act of the committee was to send questionnaires to all known members of the Rite residing in Long Beach, asking if they were in favor of a consistory here, the replies were many and in the affirmative. The committee, having previously been granted the privilege of a conference with Brother Perry W. Weidner 32, Sovereign Grand Inspector General in Southern California, went to Los Angeles and laid their request before him. He intimated he would be pleased to let Long Beach have the Bodies of the Rite, conditioned on the ability of the committee to comply with certain requirements, which he outlined to them. On it s return home the committee issued a call for a meeting in the rooms of the Masonic Club, the night of June 16, One hundred members answered the call. A temporary organization was effected, with Dr. Winters as Chairman, and Will T. Walker, Secretary. The result of the conference with Brother Weidner was laid before the meeting, accepted and the committee was given the authority to proceed. This being reported to Brother Weidner, he ordered another meeting called, at which he would be present and address the brethren. The meeting was held August 2, (TO BE CONTINUED) 8 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER JUNE,

10 A MASONIC BULLETIN June, 1926 The profession of Masonry is to build to build character to build civilization to build ideals to build above all else a universal brotherhood. Just now the Masons of Long Beach are being summoned to build a temple that will be symbolical of the principles and ideals that we have just enumerated A temple to be erected in the name of, and by a united Brotherhood, and to be dedicated to the Great Architect of the Universe. Our response to this great call of Masonry must not be a weak half-hearted one, but on the contrary, we must give it the best that is within us and back it to the limit of our possibilities. All Long Beach in fact, all Southern California, is watching us, for the word has gone out and down the line that the York Rite Bodies are to build a Temple in Long Beach. As Masons, we are on trial our prestige as a great fraternity is at stake. We must live up to our high standards and to our known ability to do things. It must not be said of us that a single Masonic Body or an individual Mason of Long Beach even hesitated to assist in putting over this splendid enterprise. That this Temple will be built we are all agreed. We have delegated some of our number to be leaders, directors, of this great building to draw the designs on the Trestle Board and lay out the work. The real job of building is up to us as individuals. The material must come from us. They can only place it as fast as they receive it at our hands. The quicker we get behind them, the quicker the job will be done, the quicker we will have a home we have all wanted for so long, and which we have so much needed. The financial response of every Masonic Body, of every individual Mason, whether a member of the Long Beach Bodies or elsewhere, should be in keeping with this great project and thus prove to the world our zeal for the furtherance of our great order by our early completion of this the most important and laudable task ever undertaken by the Masonic Fraternity of Long Beach. Signed, Aubrey Parks Thus began the History of Scottish Rite Bodies in Long Beach with an introduction by Joseph Leonard Stiebel, 32, who was the first Almoner of the Bodies. The history of the Scottish Rite Bodies, in the Valley of Long Beach, California, from their inception to the present time, reads like a page of fiction. Conceived of a chance remark, desire became obsession, gathered momentum, and, like a great conflagration, swept away every obstacle in it s path, (Continued on Page 13) VISIT YOUR LODGES ANGELS GATE LODGE #198: Bland Place, Lomita Meets every Tuesday (310) ARTESIA #377: E. 187th St., Artesia.
