3 The Rewards of the Rite By Roy Ellis Steinfeld 32 o KCCH---Master of Kadosh Scottish Rite Freemasonry offers the greatest of all opportunities for self-improvement. It has within it the glamour of romance, the magic of history, and the comfort of philosophy. Scottish Rite Masonry stands as a symbol of the wisdom of the ages. We know that we are part of an Institution that has forever followed the glorious Light in the East. We are part of the hopes, the yearnings and efforts of a world-wide group of men who are meeting and working in the name of God. We have a share in the spreading of ideals of justice, tolerance and kindness. To us is given the opportunity for unveiling symbols which impart golden truths. We, as Scottish Rite Masons, have the opportunity to grow morally in an atmosphere of sacred silence. We are members of the Scottish Rite which throughout the ages has taught and followed the ways of peace, yet never for a moment has capitulated to the demand of dictatorship. We are members of Scottish Rite Freemasonry which has forever inspired men to engage vigorously in the struggle for the preservation of God-given rights. Timothy Cable, 33⁰ Personal Representative of the Sovereign Grand Inspector General in California As I write this article I am pleased to say that after several years, we have started a long class held on the second Saturday of each month until the summer dark months. Thanks to the hard work of Ill. Jim Sunseri, we have resurrected several degrees, which when performed will make us once again the TOP valley in the Orient of California. We are also actively involved in the 2016 VMAP program under the leadership of Honorable Jonathan Dilley. On a sad note, we will lose our long rental agreement with the school district when the Head Start school terminates their lease at the end of the school year. We are pursuing a new tenant for either a pre-school or a child daycare to fill the vacancy. Costs to run this facility continue to soar and with the loss of our rental income sources, we are faced with the possibility of cutting office hours and related expenses. One of these will be the elimination of our current phone tree system, an expense which has not proven the results justify the cost. However, we re keeping our fingers crossed that we have reached an agreement on a probate issue that will be a huge benefit to our Valley. When this occurs we will be able to accomplish many much needed repairs to our building and some exciting upgrades to further enhance our rental amenities. Our KSA Chieftain Kyle Guyot and his staff are doing a stand up job breathing life back into the organization. One more brother I would like to make a shout out to, is Brother Nick Hardy Bell who has and continues his enthusiastic pursuit in the vineyards of Scottish Rite Masonry. We also, lost a valuable and very dedicated Mason when the Honorable Robert Reynolds passed away suddenly. Ron was a staunch supporter of our ROTC/JROTC programs, Veterans Hospital and the Masonic Service Bureau, Soft and Safe to thee my Brother. In closing, I want to invite any of you who have only received the 5 essential degrees to come back and support the members along their journey in the new long class and see the degrees you haven t seen. Here s wishing you and your family health and happiness and God Bless. Tim APRIL, MAY, JUNE
4 Notes From the General Secretary Ill. Chuck Bruggeman, 33⁰ Philanthropic Announcements CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY Last January, we had an annual installation of officers to serve our Valley during the ensuing year of The leaders of our Long Beach Lodge of Perfection (4 th -14 th ), Chapter Knights Rose Croix (15 th -18 th ), Council of Kadosh (19 th -30 th ), and Consistory (31 st -32 nd ) are expected to open and close their respective Degrees that we are now scheduling during one Saturday morning of most months, which you will find published in our Scottish Rite Reporter. If they cannot attend for some reason, they are expected to have their next in line officer take over and notify the Office of the change. They are also responsible to see that their officers are in attendance during our Stated Meetings which occur monthly except July and August. Roll call is given and officers are expected to attend, or call into the Office for their excused absence. Again, if they cannot attend for some reason, they are expected to have their next inline officer take over and notify the Office of the change. It is time for these officers to take charge of their respective assignments and not rely upon the Office to do their work for them. Also the Senior Warden of the Lodge of Perfection, Senior Warden of the Knights Rose Croix, First Lt. Commander of the Council of Kadosh and Prior of the Consistory, who will be in charge for the year 2017 should be watching for Good Men within our Valley to become officers during their year. Have members available who you would like to see serving during your term of office, who would do a good job and make you and your Valley most proud. At least one vacancy will occur, sometimes more for one reason or another. Watch our new members and attempt to help them become involved, as they are the future of our Valley. DELINQUENT DUES NOTICES We have received many complaints from our members about DELINQUENT DUES NOTICES that have recently come out for their 2016 dues. These notices are sent out from the Supreme Council in Washington, DC, not from us. When we receive a letter that contains Dues Payments, it will be processed within one week. The results are then sent to Supreme and they will not always be processed on arrival. If you obtain a Delinquency notice and your Dues are paid, please disregard it. Chuck Bruggeman The Correct Position During Scottish Rite Prayer By Roy Ellis Steinfeld 32 o KCCH Master of Kadosh Predicated upon the basic foundation of belief in a personal God, the Scottish Rite gives primary importance in it Degrees and it meetings to prayer. While there is an established position and sign to be used by all Scottish Rite Masons during prayer, the position and sign are sometimes not uniformly practiced. All Scottish Rite Masons (except when engaged in ritual at the altar) stand during prayer, with caps remaining on the head as part of a uniform. So much is known and done. What is also required is giving the accompanying Sign of the Good Shepard. This is done by folding the arms, the left over the right, with the outstretched fingers touching the shoulders. The position is comfortable and easily remembered if it is realized that the sign represents the Good Shepard carrying a lamb around his neck and holding its feet by his crossed hands. During prayer, in this position, the head is slightly bowed. The practice of this prayer position and sign, and their explanation and demonstration will add much to the meaningfulness of our devotions. 4 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER APRIL, MAY, JUNE
