The Chinese New Year is based upon a lunar calendar and the cycles of the moon which is why that date fluctuates every year. In China this holiday is referred to as the spring festival. The largest celebration of the traditional holiday outside of China exists in San Francisco which dates back to the 1860 gold rush. Chinese immigrants celebrated the New Year after they settled in San Francisco to work for mines and railroads. Food and a family feast are most important aspects of the holiday. The entire family gathers on New Year s eve to eat a huge meal all night long. Eating long noodles is a sign of longevity as the noodles aren t cut. Serving a fish as the final course is symbolic of prosperity and the fish is not eaten. The original Chinese New Year celebration lasted fifteen days. The date for new year begins the day after the new moon and continues until it is full. This is symbolic of gaining prosperity as the moon gets bigger and brighter each night. The color red symbolizes many things in China. For New Year celebrations a red envelope containing money is given to young people to guarantee prosperity. Anyone who has a job or is married gives money to someone younger and isn t working. Fireworks are set off to scare away evil spirits. Moon cakes are traditional food served on the final day at the full moon. They are round, white dumplings which symbolize completeness and wholeness of the family. William F. 3 14 3 News of Note We have the need for a couple of good dedicated members of our Scottish Rite to help with the mail. We only do about four or five mailings during the whole year, so you are going to be really tied up. We normally work on Tuesdays or Thursdays, but if Wednesday is more convenient for you, so be it. It s always in the mornings. We are very adaptable and the world will not stop turning if we change the days. So if you are willing to help, please give me a call at Ramon Figueroa Thank you to all who attended last month s Aebelskiver Breakfast. It was a fun morning and a great fund raiser for the Language Center! This month we celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month, an annual event that provides opportunities to raise awareness about communication disorders and to promote treatment that can improve the quality of life for those who experience problems with speaking, understanding, or hearing. Stop by and check out our informative bulletin board, complements of our own Joan Mamey. This month the Language Center evaluated one child and completed hours of therapy for the thirty children on our case load. Thank you all for your continued support! The Language Center Staff Michael J. Max McGuire, 32 Master of Kadosh Consistory Greetings brethren, and welcome to Springtime. The upcoming class is knocking at the door, so let us welcome them as only we in Pasadena can. I thought I d share an observation or two with all about that journey in Masonry. As we all ask life s big questions, I have noticed that Masonry will not give you the answers. Rather what it will do, is show you where to find them. We only ask those questions which we already intuitively know the answer to, but don t realize it. I ll give you an example. Have you ever wondered around your residences looking in frustration for your car keys? You look in every drawer, nook and cranny to no avail, when suddenly a glimmer of light catches your eye. You look down to see that you have had them in your hand the whole time! Masonry is like that glimmer of light. For the new class, a great place to start is our library, or any brother in Pasadena. (this can save you a lot of time...there is always a brother that sees the keys in your hand) I would like to thank you brothers for electing me master of Kadosh, and if there is anything any of us in the Consistory can do for you, please let us know. Moving? If you are moving of have moved, please call the Office and give Mary your new address and new phone number. The number to call is We thank you and the postman thanks you. The word Kadosh is Hebrew, and signifies holy or consecrated. It is thus intended to denote the elevated character of the Degree and the sublimity of the truths which distinguish it and its possessors from the other Degrees. Pluche says that in the East, a person preferred to honors bore a scepter, and sometimes a plate of gold on the forehead, called a Kadosh, to apprise the people that the bearer of this mark or rod was a public person, who possessed the privilege of entering into hostile camps without the fear of losing his personal liberty.

4 4 13 The Scottish Rite Comes to America In 1761, the year before Frederick the Great was said to have taken under patronage all Masonry in Germany, Stephen Morin of France was commissioned Inspector General for the New World by the Grand Consistory of Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret in Paris to introduce the Rite in America. Morin established bodies in Santo Domingo and Jamaica, but he did not enter the continent. He did, however, commission Henry Andrew Francken who had come to Jamaica to establish the Rite in American Colonies. Francken reached Now York in 1767 and established a Lodge of Perfection in Albany, the first in continental America. Francken bought a copy of the Grand Constitutions of 1762 with him, which he left at Albany. Both Morin and Francken were given authority to establish Lodges and to appoint Inspectors possessing powers equivalent to their own. Records of many established Lodges of Perfection seem to have been lost, but some accounts are still extant. A Lodge of Perfection was established at Philadelphia in In 1783, one was organized at Charleston, South Carolina, by Isaac DeCosta. A Lodge was established at Baltimore in 1796 by Henry Wilmans, a Prussian, but the source of his authority is not definitely determined. The Lodges of Perfection from the beginning were in full harmony with the Symbolic Lodges, assuming no authority over them and invariably beginning their work with the Fourth Degree. Agreeable to the Constitution in 1786 the United States was divided into two Jurisdictions of the Rite. The Northern Jurisdiction now consists of fifteen states, and the Southern Jurisdiction of Thirty three states. Since 1845, each jurisdiction, In deference to the Constitution of the York Rite practiced in this country, waives its rights of privileges, so far they relate to the first Three Degrees of Ancient Craft Masonry. 8 Welcome to our Candidates Man is different from all other animals, in that he is endowed with the power to reason and think. The universe is filled with Mysteries; Nature speaks a language of its own and God wanted that Man should know the mysteries of the Universe and understand the languages of nature, wherein are hidden great and fundamental principles of life and death. It is within the reach of man to fathom the mysteries of the Universe and unlock the Secret of Nature and learn there from the why and wherefore many things. Nature is the written thoughts of God. Do you want to understand nature and read God s thoughts? Have you a longing to know? Have you seriously thought about God; about His greatest work of creation-man? Have you wondered about the Soul and its immortality? The mission of the Scottish Rite is to awaken in you the desire for knowledge, an eagerness to know and to place your feet in the path that will lead you, unafraid, to the foundation of knowledge where each for himself may taste and know that it is good. Each one for himself must interpret the Holy Doctrine and find the Royal Secret, and therein is infinite joy. The Scottish Rite is a rite of instruction. It interprets the symbols and allegories of Masonry in the light of history and philosophy, using the words of the supreme prophets of humanity, ceremonies of the great religions of the world, and significant episodes from history. It is the foe of intolerance, bigotry, and ignorance. It is the prayerful hope of the Masters and other members of these Bodies that your experience in receiving these Degrees may rich, significant and profitable, and that you will go forth from this Cathedral thoroughly imbued with ideals and purposes of these Degrees a fellow soldier in the cause of Truth, Justice, Equality and Fraternity. Every Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite from the Fourth through the Thirty-second, reaches by its ceremonials as well as by its instruction, that the noblest purpose of life and the highest duty of man are to strive incessantly and vigorously to win the master of everything of that which in him is spiritual and divine over that which is material and sensual; so that in him also, as in the Universe which God governs, harmony and beauty may be the result of just equilibrium.
