Ask a veteran, he can relate the cost better than anyone I know, and I was reminded recently at the funeral service of Hon. Gary Fishbeck s son, Christopher who made the maximum sacrifice in Iraq at the young age of 25 years. Lest we forget on this important occasion, that we enjoy the right to, go to the church of our choice, discuss political differences, go to any movie of our choice, buy a car a house and its furnishings, our choice, go to the market, the bank, and travel anywhere we would like and enjoy our families and friends. Something the citizens of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and other nations do not understand, having lived in tyranny and fear for generations their comprehension of freedom is none existent. Do we, do you, comprehend the freedoms we have and enjoy, or do you and many others, take it for granted? Remember on this important occasion, Freedom is not free and never has been, it takes the likes of Christopher Fishbeck s to provide the comfort and security we enjoy daily. While I did not have the pleasure or opportunity to meet this young man, a hero in his own time, I certainly respect and admire his motto, Do the right thing, for it goes to the heart of our nation and Freemasonry. May our father in heaven bless all of our veterans whom have made the sacrifices necessary to maintain those freedoms for each of us. God Bless America. How delightful it was to honor our 50 year members attending this year; Brothers, John Cambpell, 32, Leroy Forehand, 32, Hubert Hust, 32, Jerome Saltzer, 32, and Claire Kelbaugh, 32, a dual member of Pennsylvania Scottish Rite. Together, these brethren provided 27 friends and family for the dinner and ceremonies. We also had 9-25 year members contributing another 19 to the festivities as well, all in all we had 115 attending this annual event, and to everyone participating and supporting, we extend a gracious THANK YOU. Our new entertainer brought to us by Brother Charles Schubert, 32, Nicolette, was a special attraction and her energetic performance and tributes to Marilyn Monroe & Celine Dion were greatly portrayed and enjoyed immensely. Our Valley now has six Lodge Ambassadors and one Assistant; Long Beach Lodge #327, Ill. Lewis Main, 33, Assistant John Vander Horck, 32, (Continued on Page 14) JULY,

4 CHALLENGES Today, we note that most people turn their backs on the OPPORTUNITY to meet a challenge, difficult items are avoided and when a problem arises, many don t know what to do. They look for help everywhere, except inside themselves. The words I can t do that, are used continually. When was the last time you heard someone say, Okay, I ll do it.? Life depends on overcoming obstacles, meeting challenges, and testing our inner strengths, and the men who formed this great Nation had those strengths. As Freemasons we are not interested in problems, but rather we seek solutions. We are not concerned with the darkness of today, but rather how we can bring about a brighter and better tomorrow. We face the struggle squarely so that those that follow can look with pride at our strengths, persistence and devotion. Remember the poem, The Bridge Builder by an anonymous author, who relates the concerns of an old man that can be compared to the concerns, we have as Freemasons. It tells of an old man who walked a lone highway and came at night to a chasm vast and wide and deep. Because of his vast experience, he had little trouble crossing the sullen stream, but when on the other side, he turned and built a bridge to span the tide. A fellow pilgrim asked why he stopped to build a bridge when his journey would end with the ending day and he would not again pass that way. The old man replied, There follows after me today, a fair haired youth, and this chasm which is naught for me, might to him a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim, good friend, and I am building this bridge for him. May it ever be said by those whom know us as Freemasons, that they can tell who we are by the way we meet the challenges of life. Are you a builder? We Need Books Hey Brother, can you spare a book or two? We need books to satisfy the minds of bright young Masons. (Please, books on Masonry only.) Thank you. We Sell Books Over the years we have collected multiple copies of books. When we sell these books, we raise money to purchase books we don t have. Contact Bro. Matt Marfield, 32, K.C.C.H., at the L.B.Scottish Rite. The Declaration of Independence and Its History By Roy Ellis Steinfeld, 32, K.C.C.H., Senior Warden Lodge of Perfection In the Scottish Rite we revere the spiritual over the material. Consequently, it is the spirit of man, an act, or a book that draws our attention or respect. So it is with the Declaration of Independence. We admire the depth and scope of the human spirit that created this special document. Yet the physical is our closest and most human tie to the spiritual. With appropriate wonder and gratitude we treasure the evidence of genius revealed in the text of the Declaration. It is our good fortune as a Nation that the original text, to which a number of Freemasons attached their names, exists to this day and is enshrined in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. The history of the document itself is fascinating. It reflects the history of America. It underlines our continued love of freedom. It reveals our unshakable patriotism. May our country ever remain committed to the thoughts and aspirations of our forefathers. Patriotism in America Scottish Rite Americanism (Continued from Page 16) The signers of the Declaration of Independence and later, the Constitution, were for the most part young men, Washington and Franklin being among the elder contingency. But they established Americanism and patriotism. These men, and they were mere mortals, held high the torch of freedom, which was later to be won on the fields of battle and handed down from generation to generation until today. And we, as Scottish Rite Masons, must give it more than lip service, for it is more needed today than even during the Civil War of our great-grandfathers time. Today it appears to be the breaking down of our ideals and standards, morals that have made us the greatest Nation on Earth. Freemasons of the Scottish Rite need to remember and truly fight to preserve it. Once established as a Nation among nations, we reached westward with the help of pioneer Freemasons like Davy Crockett, Austin and Houston, Lewis and Clark. The heroic stories of these men and of those who later fought our Civil War or the War Between the States, only cemented the Americanism we know today, the feeling within us when we see our flag flying high, the tear in our eye when we sing the Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, and Yankee Doodle Dandy. Yes, Americanism is that fairness that permits us to stop short when we step on the toes of others. It is the right to own land, to buy and sell it. It is the right to speak out with your opinions and to insist on the rights of others to do the same. It is above all, the will and right to give rather than to receive, to be a part of the solution to problems rather than be a part of the problem. Americanism is Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Ancient and Accepted by friends and Brothers the world over. It is trust that we earn and expect. It is the love of our country and family, now and forever more. 4 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER JULY,

5 Patriotism in America Scottish Rite Americanism By Roy Ellis Steinfeld, 32, K.C.C.H., Senior Warden Lodge of Perfection Patriotism! What a beautiful word. How it expresses the proud spirit of America and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry through the history of our country. The United States of America, how did it happen, what is it really, and can we preserve it as we have inherited it? Its conception came with the hardy adventurers, the homeless, the destitute and the poor of Europe leaving the weighty problems of the Old World to face the unknown wilderness and the far-off North American continent, more specifically that of America to start a new life. Americanism was the spirit of those with John Smith at Jamestown in 1607, and those with the Puritans at Plymouth Rock in These were hardy men and strong women who ventured everything in their determination to govern themselves, to find room to live and to enjoy freedom as never before encountered in the Old World. Friendship, peace, love of God, the right to worship as they deemed right and to own a small piece of land as their own to many people, as well as myself, this is Americanism. For over 150 years they worked, struggling to gain a foothold, and slowly our Nation grew. These early pioneers steadily moved westward for more land and more freedom, and in their place in the East there arrived tradesmen, the professional and the younger sons of great families. They, too, were caught up in the new experience of a free trade system of freedom that made them a part of the American scene. An outline of what was Americanism was gradually developed in the minds of the colonial American people, and it was inevitable that after the opening of the 18th century to the 1770s, Americans would find harsh, unnecessary and arbitrary rules forced on the young nation. It would be an unacceptable check on the free and independent way in which the Colonies in America had been governed up to that time. The growing wealth of the American Colonies was a large temptation to the English Parliament to impose tea, stamp and other taxes on the Colonies without taking their advice or council. The Colonies balked loudly and strongly, protesting taxation without representation. Here was a new sense of vital Americanism that produced the Declaration of Independence and was later to follow with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. America was born, the United States of America, a tiny baby of less than four million people. Fifty-six new Americans signed that great Declaration and at least nine of them are proved Masons, perhaps more. What did these brave souls give to us here in America even to this day? In leaving Constitution Hall, Benjamin Franklin has been quoted as saying, A Republic if you can keep it, He also advised the delegates at the time of signing, That surely we must all stand together or surely we will hang separately. (Continued on Page 17) Tips on Memorizing By Bro. Edward A. Rund, Chair - Education Committee With few exceptions, beginning to memorize text material, possibly for the first time Is a difficult and scary task. But I promise you, the more you work at memorizing your catechism and later even lectures, the less difficult it becomes. Candidates seem to learn in different ways. Some find it best to learn a portion and then repeat it to the Coach., while others find it easier to just learn mouth-to-ear where the Coach presents the words and the candidate repeats them. A third mechanism is to work with another candidate, where one asks the- question and the other gives the answer, then switching from time to time. Don t hesitate to see which method works best for you. One s mind set is a key ingredient in the process. Yes., it is a struggle and can be frustrating. I ve tried. I just can t learn this stuff! Yet, you are no different than the multitude of candidates who came before you who have memorized their catechisms. You can do it. Be confident. Believe it! Now here are some tips to help you. 1. The first step is to read the catechism to determine if YOU know what it is saying. Make sure you understand the meaning of each of the words and how to pronounce, them. 2. Read through the questions and answers several times, visualizing what you were experiencing at cacti point in the degree ceremony. This wil help you. divide the catechism into memorable sections, e.g., entry, altar, apron, tools. 3. After you can clearly recall the sequence of events, begin reading the catechism aloud, over and over. This begins the process of establishing neural links in the brain, the basis of building memory, One important consideration -many brethren have found it helpful to memorize both the questions and answers together. 4. In starting your memory work, don t think of it in terms of all those words and pages. Start at the beginning, focusing on bite-sized pieces, such as a block of five questions/ answers or at natural breaks. 5. Find a calm and quiet place to read the first question/ answer a couple of times; concentrate. Put the booklet down and see if you can repeat it. Picture the words on the page. Look for patterns in a string of words: first letters alphabetical, shortest to longest words in a sequence. Obviously, at this point you wont get every word correctly. But the more you repeat this process the closer you will come. 6. Once you have the first Q & A down pat, go to the next ones and do the same. When you feel you ve accomplished learning those, go back and do both sets of Q & As. Continue working on each succeeding Q & A in the block you selected. 6 HUBERT HUST CLAIRE KELBAUGH 50-YEAR HAT RECEIPIENTS JOHN CAMPBELL JEROME SALTZER LEROY FOREHAND Tips on Memorizing (Continued from Page 5) 7. Repetition burns the words into the memory, so if you are in the shower, driving in the car, wherever you re alone keep working at it. Remember, it will get easier. The brain is like a muscle and you re exercising it to strengthen or build it up. 8. When you have several blocks under your belt, let your Coach see how you are doing by testing you. Then set, those aside and continue with the next sections. Yes, it takes time and effort, but you will eventually get to the end, and then put it all together. When you feel ready and it s time for your examination, you will answer with confidence, especially with your Coach standing there across from you asking the questions. 9. Finally, one of the wonderful benefits of memorizing catechism and ritual is described in a paper I posted for December 2010 in the on-line Learning Corner at ilmason.org/ Masonic Education. There you will learn how what you have memorized will direct your steps to living the principles of Freemasonry in your daily life, almost without being aware of the influence. I might add that while Ill. Lew is our Membership Chairman and an Ambassador for two Lodges, he has so far this year brought in 11 new members, which shows a busy man gets things accomplished. We have two very fun days planned, the first being on Saturday July 9th, beginning at 1:00 P.M., which is a fund-raiser for our Children s Clinic comprised of current, past clients and family members presenting a TALENT SHOW for the purpose of showing support and giving back to the Clinic that assisted them in their quest for a child that could communicate. Further information is elsewhere in the publication. Another important event for the Valley will be a FELLOWSHIP NIGHT, Coming Saturday August 13th, 1:00 5:00 P.M., for the primary purpose of introducing non-masons and non-members to Scottish Rite Masonry. So it will be important to network your friends and Brothers so we will have a large audience for our speaker, Ill. Rex Hutchens, 33, G.C., who will enlighten all attending I am sure. Here also, there is further information included in this edition elsewhere. Finally, do you know of a Brother who lives in your proximity, locale that very well may attend our meetings if only he had a ride? As every member knows, attendance is not required in Masonry, but the fellowship and camaraderie, (also catching up with the latest news of your fellow Brothers is rewarding). This would provide more input into our operation, as well as add to the improvement in membership. I personally know of long time members that have expressed an interest in this being a happening, are you willing to help? Pike s Masonic Formulas and Rituals, edited and annotated by Ill. Arturo dehoyos! Briefly scanning the contents, I m delighted to report that this very handsome volume is just as meaty as Arturo had claimed, with enough material to thrill the Masonic Ritualist and Student. These source documents contain the essence of our Degrees before they had been fleshed out by Ill. A. Pike, and reveal the many fertile fields from which the seeds of our Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite degrees were husbanded into the Rite we behold now. If, like myself, you have ever asked the questions: Where did our degrees come from? or, What were our degrees like before Ill. A. Pike?, this book is for you. Available from The Supreme Councils store for $65.00, we will also have ours available in the Reference Section of your Scottish Rite Library! We ll see you there! Again, our very own Ill. The desire to make our Scottish Rite Library available to outside researchers, visiting Freemasons, Scottish Rite members, and others, has been a long felt one. In discussing the future of our Scottish Rite, Ill. Joe had decided that now was the time to bring this idea into fruition; however, we cannot expect to do this without the assistance of more Book Lovers to donate a little weekend time to this end. 10 The Meaning of the Flag Draped Coffin All Americans should be given this lesson. Those who think that America is an arrogant nation should really reconsider that thought. Our founding fathers used GOD s word and teachings to establish our Great Nation and I think it s high time Americans get re-educated about this Nation s history. Pass it along and be proud of the country we live in and even more proud of those who serve to protect our GOD GIVEN rights and freedoms. I hope you take the time to read this... To understand what the flag draped coffin really means... Here is how to understand the flag that laid upon it and is surrendered to so many widows and widowers. Do you know that at military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776? Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day! The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life. The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life. The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world. The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance. The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong. The 6th fold is for where people s hearts lie. It is with their heart that they pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic. The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day. The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded. The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born. (Continued on Page 11) Symbolism of the Twenty-Fifth Degree Chuck Schubert, 32, Wise Master The Twenty-fifth Degree of the Scottish Rite is named Knight of the Brazen Serpent. The history of this degree is derived from the 21st Chapter of Numbers. When God had punished the Israelites by a visitation of fiery serpents, they came to Moses and confessed their sins. The word Holati on the jewel means I have sinned and was the word spoken by the Israelites when they looked upon the image. During this degree, the candidate will find the duties of a Knight of the Brazen serpent, which are: To purify the soul of its alloy of earthliness, that the gate of Capricorn and the seven spheres it may at length ascend to its eternal home beyond the stars, and to perpetuate the great truths developed from the ancient mysteries of Faith. The jewel is a Tau Cross surmounted by a circle, all of gold, round which, at below and above the junction is entwined a serpent. On the top of the cross in Hebrew, we find he has been wounded, and on the arms in Hebrew, we find the words the Serpent of Brass. The Meaning of the Flag Draped Coffin (Continued from Page 10) The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their Nations motto, In God We Trust. After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today. There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you ll see flags folded and now you will know why. Share this with the children you love and all others who love what is referred to, the symbol of Liberty and Freedom. Our Soldiers have preserved your right to make this choice! May God Bless America CELEBRATE YOUR HAPPY 4th OF JULY 10 THE SCOTTISH RITE REPORTER JULY,
