4 4 January / February 2014 If you have not paid your 2014 dues, PLEASE take a moment and call the office at and pay with any credit or debit card. OR Mail your check to: Tucson Scottish Rite P.O. Box 391 Tucson, AZ DO NOT PAY YOUR DUES ON-LINE AT Supreme Council s Website. Thank You! Please accept our sincere Thanks to those members who made monetary donations to the Cathedral Foundation this past year. Your generosity was greatly appreciated. Personal Rep s Message By Illustrious Brother J. Michael Atchley, 33, G..C.. nother year has passed and our membership has A remained the same. Our gains were cancelled by our losses. What can we do to change this? All of us must become recruiters. We must go into our Blue Lodges and sell our product. What product you say, US, the Scottish Rite; the opportunity to continue our education into Freemasonry; the opportunity to become involved with like-minded Brothers with the same interest; an opportunity to experience brotherhood on a greater scale. Here are just a few of the reasons to invite a Brother Master Mason to become part of the Scottish Rite. We have monthly dinners with our ladies; potlucks; various ceremonies which are open to the public and programs and activities for the ladies (The Rite Ladies). Invite your Brothers to come and spend an evening in fellowship with us and chances are they will become members. All we have to do is ASK. If 10% of our membership would bring in a candidate for the Spring Reunion, it would be the largest class we have had in over 15 years. If we all ask one Master Mason to join us and only 10% were successful, what a difference that would make in OUR Valley. Let s all make a New Year s resolution to ask one Master Mason to become part of the Scottish Rite. We are fast approaching the 100th Anniversary of our Cathedral (the Cornerstone was laid on December 8, 1915). There is still a lot to be done to restore our Cathedral to its once pristine condition. The Tuesday Crew could always use more help. If you have just one free Tuesday morning a month, come on down. Another way you can help is by volunteering for parking lot duty. Our parking lots generate over $2, a month during the months of September thru April. Where we really need help is with our Special Events. Hosting special events in the Cathedral has created a lot of interest within the community. The majority of capital improvements to the Cathedral has been paid from the funds raised by hosting special events. There is still a lot to be done if we are going to restore the luster to our Cathedral and we could sure use your help. It seems like I ve covered everything from membership, to volunteering and fundraising. None of this will happen on their own it s going to take all of us to make our Valley prosper. Please roll up your sleeves and join us!
5 January / February Cochise Scottish Rite Club Brother Matthew J. Reidmiller, 32, President, Cochise Scottish Rite Club As another year has ended, I am happy to report the success we have had during the past 12 months. At every quarterly club meeting, we enjoyed an excellent breakfast while listening to an inspiring guest speaker. The Tucson Lodge of Perfection had significant attendance from our club members and the club did a great job in supporting the numerous departments and areas of the Spring and Fall Reunions. Brothers Gene Bull and Bruce Wood received the honour of KCCH and Brother Don Rodgers was coroneted a 33º. The Master Craftsman Program study group is also continuing in support of those Brothers who wish to complete this great education program. We also had several enthusiastic Cochise Brothers join the Scottish Rite. They are all eager to learn and I am sure they will acquire the light in which they are in search. All this success is credited to the dedication and selfless drive of every club member. I am confident that our members are actively improving the Scottish Rite, Masonry as a whole, and all of the people around us. With that, I wish to thank each and every one of you for such a great year. I look forward to continuing success in the following years. I would also like to welcome the incoming officers for the 2014 year and wish them the best of luck. They are: President: Bro.. Eugene M. Guzzi, 32º Vice President: Ill.. Bro.. Michael T. 6 6 January / February 2014 Lodge of Perfection Bro.. Randal S. Jager, 32º, K..C..C..H.., Venerable Master appy New Year, Brethren! I H hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. The Creator showers us with so many blessings, however, during the holidays we can easily lose sight of these blessings. Even though I had many distractions this holiday season, I did not lose sight of the blessings bestowed upon me. I am so thankful for my family, friends, and the Fraternity. I am certainly looking forward to this year with all of you at the Tucson Scottish Rite. I wish to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you as Venerable Master for I am sure all of you enjoy being a Scottish Rite Mason as much as I do...otherwise you would not be a member. I know we have all heard the membership speech many times before. For that matter, I have written about membership myself several times in this very publication. However, we can never let down our efforts when it comes to membership. Each of us plays a part in taking the necessary steps to retain our current membership and attract new members to our Valley. So, in this new beginning of another year, let s all renew our membership efforts. I am a firm believer that the first place our membership efforts need to begin is with our existing members. Relationships are a key part of our Fraternity, so let us all be mindful of reaching out beyond our normal circle of Brothers who we associate with at each Stated Meeting. Sit at a different table next month...have a meal and chat with somebody new. The Brother you meet might be waiting to make a connection with somebody just like you! You could become the mentor the Brother needs to continue his Scottish Rite membership or even flourish into one of our future leaders. How about Scottish Rite Brothers who we have not seen in some time? Communicate with just one Brother, maybe a Brother you have a personal connection with, and offer to carpool with him to the Cathedral next month for the Stated Meeting, or some planned special event. With this simple act, we could double the number of Brothers participating in the meetings and activities. More importantly, we could reconnect with a Brother who truly needs some encouragement from another Brother. To attract new members to the Scottish Rite, it is important for us to spend some time thinking about what we love about being members. Reevaluate your reasons for being a Scottish Rite Mason often. Be certain when someone asks you why you are a Scottish Rite Mason, you can speak honestly with them about what it means to you. Additionally, be proud of your Scottish Rite membership. Talk to your Brothers at Blue Lodge and other people you know. Share with them the reasons why you value being a Tucson Scottish Rite member. We have many younger Masters of the Royal Secret among us from the last few reunions. Let s cultivate their interest and enthusiasm. We can turn it into excitement and drive for our entire Valley! I look forward to seeing all of you in Lodge very soon. Update Bro.. Al Jarvis, 32º Well, another year has gone past. Nothing really exciting has happened since I returned to the USA a few months ago. I am presently staying in a rural area along Puget Sound in the Tacoma, WA area. I am enjoying all the green and an occasional rain or snow. After so many years in the Arizona desert, such normal things are quite unique. Retirement is everything good one could imagine and then some. I wish I had retired at 62 or 65, rather than waiting until 68. I look forward to returning to Asia soon. Plans are to arrive in China around February for 6+ months and then probably back to the States. I wish you all the very best life has to offer, including happiness, wealth, health and long life and the best year ever. Cathedral Drawing Back by popular demand! The drawing, which is a fundraiser for the Cathedral, will begin a new game at the January Stated Meeting. During the past year, two lucky members took home a total of $3, Human progress is our cause, liberty of thought our supreme wish, freedom of conscience our mission, and the guarantee of equal rights to all people everywhere our ultimate goal. Scottish Rite Creed

8 8 January / February 2014 George Washington Master Mason Degree The Southern Arizona Masters and Wardens Association is hosting the George Washington Master Mason Degree at the Scottish Rite Cathedral on Saturday, February 15, The First Section of the Degree will begin at 10:00am and will be conferred by George Washington and his Brothers in Colonial attire. The Second Section will be performed in Ancient costume followed by the closing. Refreshments will be served. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 by the current calendar, but WAS actually born on February 11, 1732 as indicated on his official birth record. He was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on the evening of August 4, 1753, while a Major in the Continental Army, in Fredricksburg Lodge No. 4 in Fredricksburg, Virginia, and as we all know, went on to become General of the Continental Army and the first President of the United States. Many times he was nominated as Grand Master of various States and also as General Grand Master of the United States, and acted as Grand Master Pro-tem at the laying of the cornerstone of the Capital. Such was Washington s character, that from almost the day he took his Masonic obligations until his death, he became the same man in private that he was in public. In Masonic terms, he remained a just and upright Mason and became a true Master Mason. Washington was, in Masonic terms, a living stone who became the cornerstone of American civilization. He remains the milestone other civilizations follow into liberty and equality. He is Freemasonry s perfect ashlar upon which countless Master Masons gauge their labors in their own Lodges and in their own communities. It should be incumbent upon all Master Masons to honor the life and memory of this distinguished Man and Mason, as it may well have been that without him, we might not even be able to consider ourselves a Master Mason or hold this Degree. Additional information can be found by visiting the Southern Arizona Masters and Wardens Association web site at: Scottish Rite Master Masons Degree Team Sign up and become a part of the Scottish Rite Master Masons Degree Team. We will travel to any lodge located in Arizona. Both speaking and non-speaking parts are available. For additional information, please call the office at or Ill.. Bro.. Craig L.
