W. Joseph Ryland, 33 Master of Kadosh Consistory I am truly thankful to be able to serve the Consistory and the Valley of Pasadena as the Master of Kadosh. I am also privileged to receive good fellowship and counsel from the other officers in the Consistory. I am happy to say that in the past year many of our new members have become active and have started to contribute their expertise to the various activities that are available in our Valley. It is a good feeling to know that the Valley of Pasadena is growing in membership and those new members are quality Masons that will add to the prestige of our Valley. At our stated meeting on Friday, September 3, 2010 we will have the privilege of seeing the Year Ceremony. It is very important that we honor those members who have been members of the Scottish Rite for 25 and 50 years. I look forward to presenting pins and certificates to those members who served honorably for 25 years. Those members who have served our Rite for 50 years or more will receive their pins, certificates, and caps from our Personal Representative of the Sovereign Grand Inspector General. The Scottish Rite 50 Year cap is sky blue in color, which signifies the universality of Freemasonry. The gold 50 Year pin is, indeed, a distinguished item that is universally recognized. There will be a large crowd present to observe this program so if you have not made your reservations yet, it would be advisable to do so immediately.

Ken Christianson, 330. Here is a decent photo of part of the class that was held last month at the Valley. It really was quite good. Titled FREEMASONRY s IMPACT ON CIVIL SOCIETY and taught by Dr. Natalie Bayer who received her PhD from Rice University. The class went on for three weeks and explored some rather interesting facets of Masonic history and how we have related to the rest of the world for these past centuries. Did you realize that it was a Freemason who led the first Russian Revolution? I didn t, among many other things. The Class was the result of PGM Larry Adamson s work for the GL with UCLA and hopefully it will be a continuing program in the future. The turnout was quite good with over 50 attendees at our Valley. While other classes were held in three other places in California, ours almost tripled their attendance. Nor was civil society founded merely to preserve the lives of its members; but that they might live well: for otherwise a state might be composed of slaves, or the animal creation... nor is it an alliance mutually to defend each other from injuries, or for a commercial intercourse. But whosoever endeavors to establish wholesome laws in a state, attends to the virtues and vices of each individual who composes it; from whence it is evident, that the first care of him who would found a city, truly deserving that name, and not nominally so, must be to have his citizens virtuous. - Aristotle

6 6 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 11 Wish List The Center is in need of a specifically designed computer program (very expensive) that is now recognized as a very excellent program to assist the Pathologists in their work with our children. We need some financial assistance in obtaining the program. If can help us financially to obtain this program we will be forever thankful. Here is a brief technical description of what we need. Dinner Reservations Stated Meeting Dinner Friday, September 3, 2010 Roasted Pork Loin Number of Reservations at $8.00 Per Person... Last Day for reservations: Wednesday, September 1 1. Fast ForWorld LANGUAGE Series perpetual license for two workstations. Cost: $5,000 per workstation, total $10,000. Fast ForWorld LANGUAGE Series products build foundational elementary school reading and language skills. It prepares younger students for the listing and attentional demands of classroom instruction, with a focus on sound sequencing, fine motor skills, handeye coordination, pattern recognition, and color-shape identification. It also provides extra academic support and learning opportunities for low-achieving children in reading and language. 2. Progress/Tracker support software to maximize the Fast ForWord Program. Cost: $1,750 annually for two workstations. Scientific Learning Progress Tracker is an online Data analysis and reporting tool that enables educators to monitor the individual performance of students working with Fast ForWord products. It gives clear, action-oriented information showing student progress over time, in specific reading and cognitive skills areas. Some of the special features of this product include automatic analysis of individual progress including diagnostic and prescriptive information displayed in graphs and tables. Music Notes Six members of your Pasadena Scottish Rite Concert Band performed in the Washington D.C. area from June 19th - June 22nd. The band performed for the annual National Community Concert band Sousa Festival and this years 65th anniversary of the Liberation of Europe during World War II Our performances were held at The Rachel M Schlesinger Concert Hall and Center for The Arts in Alexandria VA. Mass band (320 musicians including 6 other bands at the Air Force memorial), WW II memorial and the John F. Kennedy Millennium Theater. This was pleasurable experience for all. Your band will perform their next concert at The Masonic Home in Covina on Saturday September 4th, 12:00PM and Glendora Masonic Lodge on Saturday September 11th. Come out and support your concert band listening to music that we all enjoy.

7 10 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 7 News Gratuitous is a word that has been on my mind lately. Over the last several weeks, a series of small kindness have been bestowed on me by different people, each one building on the other so that their small kindness have made a world of difference in my life. No one was required to help me in these ways, and in some cases, the kindness includes a small sacrifice on the part of the giver. That kind of gratuity, of unnecessary and unearned kindness, is what makes this world a great place. It occurs to me that each of you who donate and support the offer that same kind of gratuity. That unselfish, unnecessary kindness, is offered to children who couldn t possibly earn it. The small (and sometimes rather large) gratuities you donate, build up upon each other so that great things can be done here at the Center. Your selflessness makes this world a better place, better especially for the boys and girls we have the opportunity to serve. Our latest numbers show that we have done 5 evaluations. We discharged two of our students. Last month we served 44 families. The therapists put in 399 sessions. We are glad for the full caseload and we invite all of you to spread the word about the services provided by your. Our waiting list is not long, and the difference quality speech therapy can make lasts a life time. Please do not hesitate to recommend us to any parent with a child you think could benefit from our services. We want to thank you for your gratuity toward the Center. We would like to continue building on the good you have already done, so we encourage and welcome your continued support. Any way you can help, large or small will make a difference! Masters Veterans of World War II Project, Coming Home Your Valley of Pasadena, was pleased to support the Grand Masters Project Coming Home. This past summer two of our members were visitors to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D. C. Brother Keith Pashby, 32º, and Charlie Zern, KCCH, were privileged to make the trip to D.C. Brother Keith was escorted by his son Steve Pashby, KCCH and Charlie received appropriate escort. Both Veterans stated that they were visibly impressed with the visit to the Memorial and both were extremely grateful to the Rite and Grand Lodge for the privileged expense paid trip. We in the Valley of Pasadena are grateful and thankful to all those who have served this country over the past years. According to the latest published figures from the Supreme Council, there are 17,825 Scottish Rite Masons in California. We have 1,100 members in the Valley of Pasadena. Speaking of membership, if you haven t received your 2011 dues notice, you will very soon. Paying your membership dues in any organization provides the operating funds for that organization. Your Valley of Pasadena is no different. Just like your own Blue Lodge, the dues are the only income received. If the current economic conditions, illness, or other condition might make it difficult to meet your commitment, please contact the Valley Secretary. His job is to help you in any Masonic way possible. Many of our members inquire about scholarships for college or university. Call the Secretary. He can advise you about the scholarships provided by the California Scottish Rite Foundation or those offered through the Grand Lodge.
