God has blessed us to see another year and I thank everyone whom were able to share with us our Installation of Officers on Sunday, January 22, 2017, and am hoping that this auspicious beginning to our Scottish Rite Year will continue throughout. I thank the Installing Team: Ill. Frank Loui, 33, Sovereign Grand Inspector General in California, Installing Officer; Ill. Frederick Kao, 33, Personal Representative of the S.G.I.G. in California, Master of Ceremonies; Ill. Al Donnici, 33, Installing Chaplain and Ill. William Stanley, 33, Installing Organist for Installing our 2017, Oakland Scottish Rite Valley Slate of Officers. It has been exactly seventy-three (73) years since I first viewed this magnificent Scottish Rite edifice in February 1944, and I could not at that time envision in my wildest imagination or have foreseen this occasion of being associated with management and, indeed, being Installed as Venerable Master in the year From that first viewing until now, I've had a period of learning and obtaining experience world-wide that will better enable me to assume the duties of Venerable Master and continue in the footsteps of those Honorable Venerable Masters whom have preceded me in this exalted position of Leadership and Service to our Craft. I'm humbled and, indeed, thankful, for this opportunity. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead with vim, vigor, vitality and great expectations for growth, renewed fellowship and the involvement of everyone in making our Oakland Valley a place where we love the work we do ritualistically and are constantly striving to become better throughout. In that regard, I'm inviting all whom would like to actively participate in our Ritual, to come and train with us. Contact Ill. Chuck Geronimo, 33, or yours truly, for information, training time, place and dates. I dearly thank President Laurie Haas for her willingness to serve, her leadership and every one of our Dear Ladies of the Oakland Ladies Club for their patience, understanding, loyalty, undying love, encouragement and support without which our Oakland Scottish Rite Valley would be, indeed, sorely wanting. You, each and every one of you, make the Brethren better Masons and individuals by your presence and we truly appreciate each of you for all that you do to make our journey brighter. Continued on Page 5 Attention friends, family members, and care givers: Should our recipient fall ill or under hardship, please notify our General Secretary at (510) or oakland@scottish-rite.org

Our Venerable Master s Message, continued The State of our Oakland Scottish Rite Valley is evolving, and with the help of everyone we can and we will carry out the programs, activities and execution of the same expeditiously. I'm receptive to suggestions, recommendations and am available 24-7, to be of Service to our Valley. I encourage everyone to mark your calendars now, invite brethren whom have not visited with us recently, including prospective members from your Blue Lodge, to come and have dinner with us (no charge), and plan to join with us on the first Monday of each month, unless another date is specifically indicated with ample prior notification. Let us now get to work, look forward and proceed with vim, vigor, enthusiasm, renewed fellowship, growth, involvement, and God willing, we shall have an wonderful and prosperous Scottish Rite Year 2017! Sincerely, fraternally and warmest regards, Hon. Cleveland Valrey, 32, K.C.C.H. Venerable Master, Oakland Lodge of Perfection, No. 2 Cell: valrey4@hotmail.com Visiting Guthrie, Oklahoma The Scottish Rite Valley of Guthrie, Oklahoma stands out as one of the premiere Valleys of the Scottish Rite in our entire Southern Jurisdiction. Every year the Guthrie Valley exemplifies 29 degrees from our A.A.S.R. system for the enlightenment and enjoyment of their candidates, members, and sojourning Brothers. This year, our Oakland Valley has coordinated a delegation of interested Brethren to head out and Visit Guthrie at the end of March. We plan to explore, meet with their Scottish Rite Leaders, and to learn as much as we possibly may from their outstanding Degree Teams as well as their pioneers in facilitating deeper Masonic education, to include Ill. Bob Davies and Hon. Chuck Dunning. In an effort to encourage our Brethren to take the leap and accompany us, our Valley has authorized a $100 stipend, or reimbursement, to be given to each Member after they complete their travel arrangements and confirm their attendance at this upcoming Guthrie Reunion. We hope many are able to accompany us to Oklahoma! For those unable to join us this year, we will certainly return with pictures and stories to share from our travels, and hopefully new ideas applicable in our own local fraternity. For more information, please feel free to contact my office at (510) or at oakland@scottish-rite.org. Fraternally, Jonathan Prestage, 32 General Secretary Page 5
Dear Brethren, The Personal Representative s Message Welcome to a new Oakland Scottish Rite Year! This will be an event filled year, a busy year, so make sure you re following our calendar updates each Bulletin, as well as subscribe to our notifications of upcoming meetings and special gatherings. In March we will host our new Rose Croix Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal. Our Wise Master Paul Adams and his line of Chapter Officers will be hard at work putting together a program sure to please our Brethren and guests on March 20 th. Later towards the end of March, a small delegation of Brothers and Scottish Rite Leaders will be flying out to the Valley in Guthrie, Oklahoma, to watch all 29 of their exemplified Scottish Rite Degrees. That trip will no doubt reward all who are able to make it with a deeper understanding of not only our Scottish Rite itself but also a myriad of ideas applicable to the progress of our own Valley. Don t forget our Lodge of Perfection has authorized a $100 reimbursement to any of our Brethren able to accompany us on this visit. We will be hosting a Saturday live web-stream of our House of the Temple program, Celebrating the Craft. Our Brothers and their families will have the opportunity to come out for a nice lunch and the live streamed talent show. The objective of this event will be to raise funds which support both our Children s Language Clinic and the renovations of our Supreme Council s House of the Temple. In April we are planning to once again host our Brethren of La Parfaite Union No. 17 to confer their relatively unique approach to the (French) Entered Apprentice degree. This year we intend to bring out Illustrious Arturo de Hoyos to offer a lecture accompanying the degree and Festive Board. Details on ticket pricing and reservations will be forthcoming. On June 17 our Oakland Ladies Club will be putting on a joint fundraiser with men from our Valley, named A Day at the Races! This fundraiser will be held at the Golden Gate Fields racetrack. I m told those tickets will sell for $50.00 a person but include a delicious dinner and of course a day of watching the horse races. This year we will celebrate the 90 th Anniversary of our Oakland Scottish Rite building. Stay tuned for more news on the event we ll host as well as memorabilia available for purchase, and free to attendees. Stay tuned for our next edition of the Bulletin for even more announcements of activities to come in Last but never least, congratulations to the newly installed Officers in all four Symbolic Bodies of our Valley. The next Bulletin should have pictures available from our Installation night for those who were unable to attend. Let use continue joining together this year to make a greater impact within our own valley and throughout our greater Masonic Community! Sincerely & Fraternally, Ill. Frederick Kao, 33 Personal Representative Page 6
Chapter of Instruction: The Pelican in its Piety The Pelican in its Piety has served as one of the most mystical symbols in haute grade Masonry since the inception of the Rose Croix Degree in the mid-18 th century. Separately, and far older, we may trace this symbol s visual and literary reference as far back as medieval Europe, with some arguing allusions for its basis in the Great Light, (Psalm 102:6). The most prominent and traditional interpretation of this symbol is that of a Christian-specific nature. When seven pelican nestlings are depicted, they are commonly employed in symbolically representing the Passion of the Christ. When but three nestlings are visible, they may depict inference to the Trinitarian belief of Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, including the rite of the Eucharist. However, an alternative, yet potentially deeper, interpretation is that of the Pelican Vessel (Distillation Apparatus) where the sacrificial acts occur in the process of the Great Work of Alchemy. Although this symbol, and its esoteric components, are exceedingly worthy of lengthy research, a simple and practical approach such as this brief outline may still serve to inspire in any Brother the urge to contemplate the necessity for inner self-sacrifice in the life-long journey of spiritual and moral rebirth. Sincerely and Fraternally, Bro. Michael J. Ramos, 32, Prelate Gethsemane Chapter, No. 2 Knights Rose Croix Welcome to a New Year! Ladies Club News Well Ladies, we had another good year, We were able to give the Oakland RiteCare Center a donation check for $2,000.00! This year we are hitting the ground running: in June, on Saturday the 17th, we will be doing a joint fundraiser with the men of the Oakland Scottish Rite. We throw a Day at the Races! All proceeds raised will go to our Oakland RiteCare C.L.C. Tickets to this event are $50.00 each (Masonic Home residents, please call Laurie Haas for special pricing). Ticket pricing includes valet parking, an all -you-can-eat buffet, and an afternoon program. We will also be sending out new information for a Bake-less Bake Sale. We will once again be putting on a brunch this year, and will attempt another Bunco Party in the Fall. Dues are due for this year, $10.00 per member of the Ladies Club. I will also be handing out updated Ladies Club Rosters to everyone at February s Stated Meeting. Come join us for some quality social time! Laurie Haas, President (510) Page 7
Brethren, A Word from Oakland s Childhood Language Center The Board of Directors, staff, volunteers of the Oakland Childhood Language Center, and many of you in our Valley have been working hard to raise the funds necessary to pay our bills, and ultimately for the survival of the Oakland RiteCare CLC itself. This Fiscal Year of 2017/2018 we will only be permitted to use about 4% of our endowment fund for operating expenses. We had a productive meeting in late December with a consultant provided by the California Scottish Rite Foundation. We ve since recruited a volunteer specializing in the use of social media for fundraising. It will however take a few years to develop fundraisers and streams of revenue to cover our expenses while continuing to provide outstanding services to the children we serve. In February, Efren Prado and I will be attending a meeting in Santa Barbara focusing on the planning and sustainability of the Childhood Language Centers. We hope to return with good news and policy changes that will increase the prospects for our CLC surviving long into the future. This unique link, will direct you to smile.amazon.com where they will automatically ask if you want to support the California Scottish Rite Foundation with your purchases. Amazon will donate a small percentage of your purchases to the California Scottish Rite Foundation. In turn, our Oakland Children s Center will receive a small percentage of money contributed to the Foundation. Now more than ever our Oakland Childhood Language Center and the children that we aid need your financial support. A one-time donation, no matter how small, helps. Those able to lend greater support should become a Sustaining Member by pledging to donate $14/month or $167/year. Don t wait! Go to our website: Give the Gift of Learning and Speech! Fraternally, Jerry Miller President, Board of Directors Oakland RiteCare Childhood Language Center Page 8
Oakland RiteCare Testimonial: Camden s Story Camden is a 7-year-old boy who was referred to our clinic with concerns about delayed reading that had not improved with traditional methods. His reading difficulties made him so anxious he didn't want to go to school. Our Oakland RiteCare CLC decided to take a four-pronged approach towards helping Camden. First, Camden was referred out to the UC Berkeley Binocular Vision Clinic to assess whether he had visual tracking problems. It turned out he had severe difficulties with tracking words on the page and spatial planning. The UC Berkeley clinic prescribed vision training for Camden. Second, to address his school performance anxiety, we recommended The Listening Program, which aids in improving sensory regulation as well as spatial awareness. Third, since there were not yet open enrollment spaces in our Interactive Metronome program when Camden came to us, his mother contracted an outside Interactive Metronome provider. Camden completed that program over the summer. Fourth, with summer over and some fundamental needs already addressed, Camden began our Fast ForWord program, which is designed specifically to help with reading delays. Camden had completed only half of the Fast ForWord program when his mother wrote us the following testimonial: Thank you for providing the help your center has given Camden. I definitely feel that Interactive Metronome and Fast ForWord helped him, along with the separate Lindamood Bell program. I think that combination was very effective for him. I never would have done Interactive Metronome without talking to you and hearing of your positive experience. It has also been very encouraging to me on a personal level to have your support available for his reading when the school really didn't have specific interventions to address his difficulties with decoding and visual tracking and processing speed. They [the school] treated his situation the same as kids who simply hadn't been exposed to enough reading, as though a little more practice would solve the problem. Given how very much outside work it has taken for Camden to reach the point of being able to track text, decode words, commit words to visual memory, recognize their orthography and become a reader, I am frankly relieved he has gotten to this point. I wasn't sure he ever would and I believe the timely and intensive programs made all the difference in the world for him. Thanks for all of the knowledgeable help from the Oakland RiteCare Childhood Language Center! Alana, mother of Camden Page 9
