3 G r e e t i n g s f r o m t h e E a s t The Dog Days of summer are upon us. August is a part of Hurricane Season. We have been lucky so far but preparations should be made well in advance of a storm. Venice City has a free hurricane preparedness booklet which will give you the basics of preparing yourself, your family, pets and home in the event of a hurricane. Utilize this tool to be better prepared if necessary. The restroom plumbing has been attended to and repaired. This Saturday 8/4 at 9:00 AM under brother Vince Modie s direction, we will start to paint the lodge room. Also, on Saturday 8/4, I will be at the lodge from 9:00 AM Noonish. Any brother needing a photo for their dues card may meet me there, I will take your photo and upload it into Circumscribe. The Grand Lodge is still working on Circumscribe in order to take advantage of this powerful software. Currently your dues card may or may not be activated. When activated all Masonic functions, education, meetings and etc. will be scanned via your dues card and entered into the Grand Lodge s data bank, virtually eliminating the need for signup sheets. Br. Jud Broome has been appointed as a Mentor. He is working extensively toward his goal of qualifying for a Gold Card. Any brother interested in assisting Br. Broome with Mentoring contact any Lodge Officer and become an integral part of helping our newest brothers on their travels upon the Masonic pathway. I spoke to Louise Craig who is home recouping. Chaplin Malmfeldt is still battling cancer. He should be done with chemo in October and we pray for a positive outcome. Keep all our Brothers and Sisters in your thoughts and prayers. Keep those Masonic pennies. The officers ask that you keep track of Masonic time you spend working for the lodge. Inform an officer when Pennies are due you, so we may pay you. The Wednesday lunch for the month of August will be at Joseph s Diner, 625 No. Tamiami Tr., Nokomis (across from Kyles Ace Hardware). Remember Managers Due Things Right. Leaders Do The Right Thing. 4 G r e e t i n g s f r o m t h e We s t I want to begin by congratulating the brothers who passed the Master Mason 1, 2, 3 exams last month at Venice Lodge and I want to commend those 17 brothers in attendance for taking several hours on a Saturday to advance their masonic education. Awesome effort brothers! Your attendance was additionally rewarded with the payment of wages. For most of 2018, those attending our meetings and functions have been awarded such wages. Many of you have been curious about how to redeem your shiny 301 coinage. I will not keep you in suspense any longer Beginning in August, you can redeem your wages at our family dinners on the third Monday of each month. The exchange rate will be 10-Masonic Pennies (301) for 1-dinner (aka masterpiece of Chef Deb.) We will honor this exchange for the rest of Also, if you feel that you are entitled to wages that you haven t received, please let me know. I know that there are brothers working on catechism training, mentoring, building improvements, etc Please let me know the hours that you are spending to continue to make Venice Lodge the best around, and I will make sure that you are properly compensated. Our monthly meeting this month (8/20) will include an EA proficiency and a FC proficiency. Please make every effort to attend - as these brothers have been working diligently to understand the mysteries of our fraternity and are eager to display their knowledge to the Craft. On Monday August 27 th, we will be passing two brothers to the degree of Fellow Craft starting at 7 pm. Please show up to support our brothers journey from darkness to light. Many thanks to the degree team for your tireless efforts in putting on these degrees. I am sure that it will be a memorable evening. Many lodges are struggling to find enough support to put a degree together. Not our lodge! Pretty soon, our lodge will have to resort to some kind of contest (rock, paper, scissors; arm wrestling; etc ) to determine who sits in the East. It is a privilege to get to work with such a group of capable and talented individuals. Hopefully, kindness and flattery will allow me to get back into the Master s seat for a future degree. 5 G r e e t i n g s f r o m t h e S o u t h Summer is here and everyone is making vacation plans, may all our brothers have safe and fun travels. For those of us left behind, this could be an excellent opportunity to become more involved with your lodge. New ideas and projects are always welcome, so come out and help us make improvements. The weekly lunch is a good place to toss new ideas around. Just a reminder, the Sun Fiesta is right around the corner (19,20,21 Oct) and will be here before you know it. We are in the planning stage and all ideas and suggestions are welcome. We will be at the airport this year so please plan to attend and support your lodge. A big thank you to all the brothers and their families who came out for the Grand Master s Official Visit. The Shrine dining room was full, we had almost 300 brothers attend. It was a great time and the Grand Master gave a good speech, it had to be good, no one fell asleep. There will be a Master Mason class held 18 Aug 18, 9:00 a.m. at Phoenix No.346. All Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and Master Masons are encouraged to attend. Contact one of your lodge officers if you would like to sign up for this class. Each brother attending needs to have their Masonic membership number for the class. EA and FC can get this number from the lodge secretary. Please let us know ASAP. If they do not receive any responses the class will be canceled. Just a heads up from our traveling Tyler/Brother Walt Milne, the Arcadia Rodeo is scheduled for March 7 through 10 next year. Brother Milne will be getting tickets again as several brothers have already inquired about it. Ticket go on sale 1 Nov 18. Our tickets will be for Saturday, 7 March There will be a sign up sheet on the white board in the dining room for those interested. 7 Masonic Education NECESSITY OF STUDY TO A MASON by Albert Pike Masonry is a succession of allegories, the mere vehicles of great lessons in morals and philosophy. You will more fully appreciate its spirit, its object, its purposes, as you advance in the different degrees, which you will find to constitute a great, complete, and harmonious system. If you have been disappointed in the three first degrees; if it has seemed to you that the performance has not come up to the promise, and that the commonplaces which are uttered in them with such an air, the lessons in science and the arts, merely rudimentary, and known to every school-boy, the trite maxims of morality, and the trivial ceremonies are unworthy the serious attention of a grave and sensible man, occupied with the weighty cares of life, and to whom his time is valuable, remember that those ceremonies and lessons come to us from an age when the commonest learning was confined to a select few, when the most ordinary and fundamental principles of morality were new discoveries; and that the three first degrees stand in these latter days, like the columns of the old, roofless Druidic Temple, in their rude and primeval simplicity, mutilated also and corrupted by the action of time, and the additions and interpolations of illiterate ignorance. They are but the entrance to the great Masonic Temple, the mere pillars of the portico. You have now taken the first step over its threshold, the first step towards the in most sanctuary and heart of the Temple. You are in the path that leads up the slope of the Mountain of Truth; and it depends upon your Secrecy, Obedience, and Fidelity, whether you will advance or remain stationary. Imagine not that you will become a thorough Mason by learning what is commonly called the work, or merely by becoming familiar with our traditions. MASONRY HAS A HISTO- RY AND A LITERATURE. Its allegories and its traditions will teach you much; but much is to be sought elsewhere. The streams of learning that now flow broad and wide must be followed to their heads in the springs that well up in the far distant past, and there you will find the meaning and the origin of Masonry. A few trite lessons upon the rudiments of architecture, a few ordinary maxims of morality, a few unimportant and unsubstantiated traditions will no longer satisfy the earnest inquirer after Masonic Truth. Let him who is satisfied and content with them remain where he is, and seek to ascend no higher. But let him who desires to understand the harmonious and beautiful proportions of Masonry, read, study, reflect, digest and discriminate. The true Mason is an ardent seeker after knowledge; and he knows that books are vessels which come down to useful-freighted with the intellectual, riches of the past; and that in the lading of these Argosies is much that sheds light upon the history of Masonry, and proves its claims to be regarded as the great benefactor of mankind. 8 Masonic News & Events Lady's Project Benefiting the Home The Lady's Project this Masonic Year will be raising funds to update the reception area of our Masonic Home. This new, enhanced area will provide a place for our residents to enjoy, as well as provide a warm welcome and first impression to our future residents, family and guests. 9 Masonic News & Events LYPMGC and the Masonic Home The Let Your Pennies Make Good Cents Program began in It was created with the intention of every Brother donating a penny a day, to be deposited in an Endowment Fund with the principal never to be touched. The interest from this money would be utilized for the operation of the Masonic Home, which is one of only twenty homes with a FIVE STAR facility rating in Florida, and thereby ensuring the residents of the Home an exceptional quality of life, which they so justly deserve. I am confident that any Brother who visits our Masonic Home will consider his pennies well spent, and will be very proud of our beautiful facility and the comfortable, secure environment that has been created for our Brothers and Sisters. Many Brothers within the jurisdiction of Florida include L.Y.P.M.G.C. in the payment of their Dues to Lodge, in addition to voluntary contributions to the Grand Lodge of Florida. One hundred percent of the funds raised or collected for this program are not discretionary, and cannot be used for other particular Lodge expenditures.
